I really, really hate this "you're only as good as your last one" mentality that seems to pervade a good deal of popular entertainment nowadays. I'm not advocating lowering one's standards and accepting any junk that may come your way as "fair enough", on the contrary. I only wish that people would be more objective about what they take in and understand that absolute perfection in any endeavor is so rare as to be almost impossible and that (for a multitude of different reasons) they aren't all going to be winners. Waid and Co. have done an outstanding job on this title during their tenure, it may be my favorite run on the book. This team has created a lot of personal goodwill, and I have defended almost all of their decisions. I think that most of the criticism leveled at the book has frankly been baseless, unfair and exaggerated nonsense - I still do. And when I listen to the fans who cry out for a total retcon, I think to myself, "this is why we can't have nice things". Nevertheless, I would like to think that I've remained reasonable enough to call fowl on some of the elements that didn't work as well as they could have. And my feelings could still change in the handful of issues this team has left. When the preview for #14 came out and all the grumbling about Matt's wardrobe began popping up, I was really tempted to say something about how fans were overreacting to a single panel in what amounted to a three-page preview which had been removed from the context of the larger story that it was a part of. Because of that previously mentioned goodwill I feel to the creators, I'm still willing to play Devil's Advocate (so to speak) and remind everyone that this change is in no way going to be permanent, that the only one who thinks that Matt's new suit is a good thing seems to be Matt himself, and that these are all elements in a larger arc that has gradually been building to its advancing climax where, it is implied, it will all come together and pay off.

Having said all of that, I hope the payoff is worth it.

I've been a fan of DD since the eighties. I've read Millers run, Nocenti's run, Kevin Smith's run, Bendis run, Brubaker's and some that I'm forgetting. I love all of those, Millers being my favorite followed by Brubaker then Bendis. Saying that, I have enjoyed Waids run also. Too say its horrible is being ridiculous. Waids a great writer, people just don't like his take on Matt but I think they are being way over critical. If this book was universally panned by critics and fans alike I could probably agree but this book has won some awards under the helm of Waid so I chalk it up to mostly disgruntled DD fans.

Agreed. A small but vocal group of disgruntled fans. But then, you aren't going to please everyone all the time. I've been reading DD for a while (though I really don't see how that should make any difference - isn't attracting new readers a good thing?) and I think this run is terrific.

A solid issue. I do agree that the story does seem to wrap itself up a bit too quickly and perhaps carrying the arc over to another issue might have helped, but that could also be due to the fact that I'm just so drawn in to the material that I just want to spend more time with these characters. Despite that minor reservation, this issue (much like the whole of Waid and Co's run) has far more hits than misses. Their DD has consistently been one of the best superhero books out there, and is a great example of a creative team who can still work wonders even when they're slightly off-their-game.

As for the whole "Waid's DD is Spider-Man" business, I do admit that I can see a little of that here and there, but I have never get the impression that it was trying to be something other than what it is. More that it was just approaching the material from a different angle (if that makes any sense). DD and Spidey are pretty similar in several ways, maybe that's why they've been buddies for so long. But when I look at this Matt Murdock, I don't see Peter Parker with red hair, I still see the same character I've enjoyed for years.

MARK WAID (W) • CHRIS SAMNEE (A/C)

VARIANT COVER BY PHIL NOTO

THE END BEGINS HERE!

• Mark Waid and Chis Samnee begin the climactic final chapter of their beloved, Eisner Award Winning run with the return of one of Matt Murdock’s oldest and (now) scariest enemies.

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Note- this is a repost from another board.

If it is true, I'm very sad to see it end. Waid's run has had some very nasty things said about it on some of the boards, but I believe it's been marvelous (I think Matt publicly outing his secret ID was one of the bravest and best things that has happened to the book in a long time - I hope it isn't retconed later) and I'm keen on seeing what the future holds for DD. I am a bit wary of Marvel immediately shifting the book's tone to be more in line with the upcoming Netflix series; if that is their decision a gradual transition may work better. Although I wouldn't necessarily give the book up, I would really be very disappointed if the next team chooses to ignore this run in an effort to restore the status quo instead of actually building on it. And if this long rumored "Marvel reboot" thing actually happens, then I'm through.

Chris Samnee's artwork has been absolutely exemplary. I was (unfortunately) unaware of what he had done prior to DD, so his drawings really took me by surprise. If this run can be said to have had a real breakout figure it's him. My only regret is not seeing him do a B&W Daredevil story but then, he's not finished yet either.

I know I'm a bit late in commenting on this and so this is slightly off-topic, but...

as much as we love DD... Battlin' Jack, the boxer who wouldn't take a dive, is like a character out of a movie from the 1940s! (See the movies The Set-Up and City For Conquest)

I'm just going to come out and say that I disagree with almost everything that has been said here about Waid and the current run on DD; that's fair enough - no one can please all of the people all of the time. But I can say without a shadow of a doubt that, whatever our differences may be, you all have kick-ass taste in movies.

@timelordscience: Well, I can understand why it could be a bit off-putting for some readers, but that's a risk inherent in any long-running serialized medium like this. And while I don't share the same opinion, I understand and respect their subjective responses.

I agree, I also want to come out here and champion the current run in particular. It's been getting a lot of hate on the boards (some of it boarding on absurd in my opinion), but I've been reading DD for over a decade now- and have since gone back and "filled in the blanks" via TPB's and reprints -and I think Waid's run is one of the best that the book has had in it's 50+ years.
