Peru is famous as the center of the Inca Empire (1438 - 1533), arguably the largest Empire in Pre-Columbian America. The Incas were also the only people in their region to use bronze for armor and spears, entering a Bronze Age of metallurgy. The region was among the major conquest of the Spanish Empire in the 16th century. Peru gained independence in 1821.
Peru borders Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, Bolivia and Brazil.
