    Quand Max est mis aux arrêts pour trahison, sa vie bascule. Pilote dans l'US Air Force, Max dit "le Polak" a émigré aux États-Unis pour fuir la persécution nazie en Europe. Né en Haute-Silésie, de famille juive polonaise, Max s'est engagé dans l'armée américaine, où il sert sur une base aérienne du Pacifique. Pris pour un autre, il est soupçonné d'être un espion nazi, victime de sa ressemblance avec l'Allemand Werner Königsberg, né comme lui en Haute-Silésie, et qu'il a effectivement connu quand il était enfant, lorsqu'il rêvait d'aviation avec lui et la petite Hanna.
