Kull Fights at Sea
Issue five of Kull the Conqueror features another tale penned by Gerry Conway.
When Kull is hunting he makes the acquaintance of another hunter, who turns out to be the emissary of an island nation that seeks Valusia's help in a war with its neighbor.
Kull pledges his support, and in a surprising move elects to take Baron Kanuub and his men along. But even before the reach the island nation of Demascar, the crew loses a man in what appears to be an accident, though a suspicious one.
Upon reaching Demascar Kull's army is beset by winged demons, leading Kull to realize that there is more to the story than the emissary originally revealed. With evil men in positions of power in both kingdoms, and collusion by his own traitorous lords, Kull soon find himself drawn into a war of sorcery and deceit which culminates in a large naval battle.
As usual, the Severins' art is well suited to the material. While Kull the Conqueror will forever be remembered as Marvel's other sword-and-sorcery title of the 1970s, it's pretty clear that quality wise it was often Conan's equal.
