Not Completely Invincible
The Story:
Invincible and his mother are still coping with the deceit and abandonment of Omni-Man (their father and husband). Both are finding it extremely difficult to continue living the way they were. Invincible's mother Deborah has taken up drinking. Invincible is frequently having to lie to his girlfriend Amber when he has to suddenly leave on random missions from Cecil.
My Thoughts:
Once again Robert Kirkman manages to create some craziness that somehow seems to work out. This volume is great because we get further character development for Invincible. If you have been keeping up with this series than you know that his father is no longer around. Invincible has found out that he isn't the hero he thought he was. In fact he is probably this world's greatest villain. That has left a deep void in the lives of Invincible and Deborah Grayson. Kirkman does a great job expressing that emotion within these pages. We see alcoholism play a factor in Deborah's life. Invincible is concerned but doesn't seem to have the time to do anything about it due his hectic schedule he's trying to desperately maintain.
Like previous issues, there's a lot of action. Invincible is developing not only as a person but as a hero as well. We see him face numerous villains, some of which he dispatches more quickly than others. What one of the biggest lessons Invincible is learning, is that he's not quite invincible from everything. He's learning that taking a punch isn't going to be the hardest part of his life. I'm really enjoying what Kirkman is doing with his character.
The art is again by Ryan Ottley. I think he's a talented artist but the artwork in this series has yet to blow me away. It's pretty cool and you could say it suits the comic pretty well. I would like to see a little more detail in the future. On the positive side, he did do a great job capturing the emotion in the script which can be seen on the cover where Deborah Grayson sheds some tears.
Invincible is becoming a favorite series of mine. I'm not to far into the series but it's easy to tell this series has yet to reach its full potential and I'm already loving it. I would recommend this only to fans of the superhero genre. I wouldn't get it if you're not, even if you're a fan of Robert Kirkman. This is strictly for the superhero in all of us and if you can't find yours, then I'd steer clear from this.
