Something To Get Your Teeth Into...

When I saw Avatar were unleashing a 10-part vampire epic, I had to have it. I know everything seems to be rather overwhelmed with vampires at the moment - vampires here, vampires there, even bloody vampires in the X-Men now, ain`t it? But I like them, not the cheesy romantic teeny-bopper type, but something a bit darker, sensual and nasty.
And having seen what Avatar have come out with on previous titles, I`m sure they`ll produce something suitable for my tastes...
    or I hope they will.
This issue, was a bit of a curious one. A steamboat captain goes into partnership with a mysterious backer, Joshua, who provides him with the finances to build a luxurious and fast steamboat. Most of the comic centres around this, I understand that this is the first part of the ten, an adaptation of a novel, and foundations must be laid. The part I read the comic for, the nasty vampiric bit, is in there - a girl is auctioned at a New Orleans slaver`s market - lots of gratuitous naked flesh, hooray! - to be delivered to and disposed of at the plantation of `Mister Julian` and his blood-hungry guests...

The art is okay - the steamboat looks nice, at least, Rafa Lopez has a curious style, sometimes his characters look a bit odd. It is quite atmospheric though, a real feel of The Deep South in 1857. I want to like it,a and this was good - not great, but enough to whet my appetite. I look forward to the following nine parts...
