Some of the numerous "bad girls" Avatar Press is most famed for include their flagship character, Pandora but perhaps the most famed of all their characters is Lady Death, a creation of Chaos Comics! that was given to Crossgen after Chaos went bankrupt and eventually given to Avatar Press after Crossgen went bankrupt. Now she is both Lady Death and Medieval Lady Death in the Avatar Press universe, still written by her creator, Brian Pulido.

The company was founded in 1996 by William Christensen and their first three offerings were released in January 1997 with Trevlin Utz' Donna Mia #1 (previously by small-press Dark Fantasy), the "flagship" Pandora #1 and Jude Millien's (Razor) Silent Rapture #1. As time progressed more independent writers like horror titles from Joe Lansdale and Alan Moore and several movie and television adaptations and expansions. Avatar became a more "big-name" publisher when they started publishing the Lady Death comics which they moved to the Boundless imprint in 2011.
