Psiviner's Marvel/X-Men Telepath Tier List

No Caption Provided

While the members of the Psi Viners Collective have been working hard on Respect Threads and character battles for a few years now, we've also put a lot of thought into how each of the many Marvel, especially X-Men, Psychics compare with each other.

After a lot of drawn out internal debate, we thought it might be interesting to share some of our groups consensus about Marvel's Telepathic Characters.

There are 3 important rules to keep in mind here when discussing how we ranked the telepaths:

1- Feats > Statements- For one thing, it's how the Comicvine battle boards work, but in a world where everyone from teenagers like the Cuckoos and Teen Jean Grey, to one scene wonders like Gamesmaster, are considered to be "among the strongest minds on the planet", it's hard to take vague statements about power at face value, especially when most characters on this list have been defeated by others without nearly as much effort as you'd think.

It is important to note though, that statements still hold a lot of value especially if they are supported by feats and aren't easily contradicted by showings. And depending on who's making the statement, it may be more valuable than a bunch of mid level feats

2- Telepathic Strength = Raw Power + Skill + Unique Factors- It's been stated, and even shown, that some characters, despite having seemingly limitless power, just aren't good enough to hang with an opponent who knows what they're doing or is smarter than them. Similarly a character can be both skilled and possess a huge amount of power, but still not be able to contend with a special ability or unique trait of a character like a hivemind, psi link or astral form.

When a persons skill set, power level and unique factors are added together, that's how we decide how "strong" a psychic is overall.

3- Being an Omega doesn't mean much - at least not without the appropriate showings to back it up. A very important, if seemingly redundant point. While yes, several characters are stated to be Omega level mutants, it doesn't mean much when they've lost to or been unable to protect themselves from non Omegas. It's not an automatic win, nor does it automatically imply superiority to non-omegas

We have also decided to break the rankings down into 3 sections. Namely: High Tier , Mid Tier and Low Tier. These will be touched upon more in their respective sections

We will start by providing the full list of our rankings, and then going into detail regarding the characters and the reasons for their ranks, which can be seen within their spoiler tags in the "A Closer Look" section.

A Closer Look:

High Tier Telepaths

1. Jean Grey

-

No Caption Provided

Jean has had quite a rocky history when it comes to her power levels, portrayal and hype. Jean is an Omega Level telepath who (despite many retcons and de/repowerings) we've often been TOLD is unbelievably powerful despite spending several eras of comics being more of a punching bag and tag-a-long psychic then a true powerhouse. She was frequently pointed out as the pinnacle of mutant power, but her power levels without the Phoenix Force have always come into question as they were left up to word of god from writers, characters making allusions to her capabilities and generally just being revered without much hard facts to call upon.

However from the end of the 90s onward we see a increase in her showings and capabilities to more properly give her this position even without tapping the power of a certain cosmic fire bird. Interestingly enough, she's often stated to have held her powers back out of fear of them, which is an interesting justification for low showings when her incredible power levels have been a plotline in more then a dozen different plots and backstories for other characters.

In the past, this has lead to a solid stalemate with the next person on our list as Jean didn't quite measure up in showings to the "Greatest Mutant Mind in Existence" but had firmly been stated by said "greatest mind" to be above him in both potential and realization.

Not today. By the year 2023, she has gotten the feats to back up her accolades, and it's safe to say the stalemate has been broken (even if only slightly) and that Jean has taken the lead as the #1 Telepath in our Tier List.

Reasons Jean deserves this spot:

  • Statements from the vast majority of this list about her power being greater then their own.
  • Invading the minds of multiple cosmic beings from the Phoenix Force, to Knull, most recently a Celestial, and being able to harm or fend off powerful beings like LifeSeed Nate Grey and Nightmare.
  • Boasting one of, if not the best, telepathic defenses among her peers. Some notable instances were shielding the 8.5m population of NYC from a psychic attack that would have killed them, tanking huge psychic attacks from a Celestial while heavily multitasking, and shielding her mind from Cassandra Nova's attack even while already stretched to her limit.
  • Shown to outperform fellow high-tier Emma Frost on multiple occasions
  • Creating powerful psychic phenomenon across the planet during Phoenix Resurrection, including psychic constructs/projections that were giving teams of X-Men trouble
  • Several feats of doing things Professor Xavier was unable to do, or that he has stated were otherwise "impossible", without effort or foresight.
  • Statements from several writers and creators from different Eras on how powerful she can be, with a few stating she is more powerful than Xavier
  • Breaking through telepathic shielding, immunity and resistance on multiple occasions

2. Charles Xavier

-

No Caption Provided

The long revered strongest mind on the planet. Is it any wonder that he ended up here?

Charles Xavier, up until Jean Grey's most recent resurrection, was the strongest mind on the planet since his character's creation. With over 60 years of feats as Marvel's premier telepath, it isn't any wonder why some might still see him as being in the number one spot.

Alas, by his own admission, Jean was destined to surpass his own power....and while his knowledge and skill as a telepath may surpass Jean's overall telepathic abilities, it's important to note that creators also seem to be on Jean's side.

Reasons Xavier deserves this spot:

  • He has the most feats of any telepath in Marvel, regardless of the tier.
  • He has the most accolades of any psychic character in Marvel Comics or possibly any major comic company.
  • He has defeated, threatened to over power or trained every X-verse telepath in our High Tier List.
  • His best feats are above the best of any of the other telepaths on this list.
  • Has the most experience in all things telepathy among his peers
  • He's squared off with multiple God Tiers and Cosmically powered beings and given them runs for their money. (including various iterations of the Phoenix Force, Galactus, Ego)
  • Received a power increase from the M'krann Crystal that made him even more powerful than when he performed his best feats.
  • Defended and battled against the Eternals' Uni-Mind for hours on end with the aid of Cerebro

3. Cassandra Nova

-

No Caption Provided

Charles Xavier's evil twin and a psychic parasite known as a Mummumdrai, Cassandra Nova is nothing if not powerful.

A creation of Grant Morrison during his run that increased the X-Men's active telepaths by a good amount, Nova made it clear from the beginning that she was a force to be reckoned with by dropping Xavier at the height of his power. And while she's only had limited canon appearances....in almost every one of those appearances, she's utterly defeated, incapacitated or outshone one or more of the X-Men's most powerful psychics.

Reasons Nova deserves this spot:

  • Surprise attacking and tearing apart New X-Men Era Xavier's mind while his powers were Cerebra amped by x10, leaving him powerless to stop it and resorting to ending his own life with a gun to prevent her from taking over.
  • Leaving New X-Men Era Jean Grey a drooling mess just from touching minds.
  • Getting into Emma Frost's shielded mind and planting powerful suggestions despite being near death.
  • Mindcontrolling and enslaving Rachel Summers while declaring her as "no threat" to her and then mind screwing Rachel when she was done using her.
  • Remained undetected despite living in the X-Mansion with fellow telepaths such as Jean Grey, Emma Frost and the Stepford Cuckoos
  • Attacking Jean Grey's mind while she was amped by Searebro
  • Stated to be as powerful a telepath as Jean Grey and Professor Xavier
  • Orchestrated and did the heavy lifting in a telepathic circuit that wiped the minds of the inhabitants of Avalon, including Exodus
  • Lobotomized trillions of bacterial beings threatening to take over the world with a psychic attack when Sublime and Arkea attempted to assimilate her

4. Emma Frost

-

No Caption Provided

The White Queen of the Hellfire Club and the dominant psychic presence of the mid to 2000's through early 2010's, Emma comes it at number 4 on our rankings with some of the most abundant showings of skill of any telepath and 3 decades of "World Class/Omega Class/Psi of the Highest Order" statements.

While there was and still is a lot of debate on how much raw power Emma actually possesses, the group opinion was pretty strong on where she ended up.

Emma's strengths include range, mental traps and outsmarting opponents...but her feats and comparisons to Charles Xavier are what earned her this position....and it doesn't hurt that she's beat almost everyone else below her.

Reasons Emma deserves this spot:

  • She's repeatedly gotten past defenses and shields created by Xavier, even going as far as trapping him in his own mind
  • She's blocked Xavier, the Phoenix Force and Exodus' telepathy casually
  • Implied to be one of the 5 most skilled telepaths on the planet
  • Defeating or getting the upper hand against telepaths more powerful than herself
  • Defeating the Hiveminds of Sinister, the Thousand in One Cuckoos, The Skrull Blockade, and recently the Eternal's Uni-mind
  • Defeated or outperformed fellow High Tiers Xavier, Rachel Summers, Exodus, Mr. Sinister and the Stepford Cuckoos at one point or another.
  • Defeating the Cuckoos that were empowered by Phoenix Force shards
  • Broken through telepathic shielding or resistance on multiple occasions
  • Her telepathic handiwork was so complex and well done that fellow high-tier Exodus was unable to undo/unravel it
  • Shielded the X-Men from Sinister's telepathy in Antarctica while she was in New York

5. The Shadow King

-

No Caption Provided

Shadow King is a monster of a telepath who has repeatedly been compared to Charles Xavier and is even hinted to be a multiversal embodiment of hate.

Realistically, he has a bit of an issue with context, as some of his best feats of power have him amplified by some form of psychic nexus or link between all the minds of the world that he gained access to off screen. (Almost never the same one twice) Still, he often manages to lose confrontations despite these amps to his supposedly Xavier level power, often losing to people far weaker, less experienced and even without powers at all.

Still, while it's easy to crack jokes at his failures, he's still shown that when he enters combat with or without an amp, he isn't to be played with...even if he decides to play with you instead.

Reasons Shadow King deserves this spot:

  • Has unsurpassed knowledge of the astral plane.
  • Has created 4 different global links to possess/control/corrupt all psychics and/or all minds on the planet.
  • Capable of controlling hundreds, if not thousands, at a time with ease
  • Has defeated and mind controlled multiple high tiers and alternate versions of them from around the multiverse, such as Xavier, Jean, Emma, Rachel and Betsy.
  • Has more than a few impressive statements from being the strongest mind on the planet to even a multiversal threat depending on the appearance.
  • Is able to defeat and imprison a young Phoenix Force Rachel Summers

6. Rachel Summers

-

No Caption Provided

Rachel Summers, daughter of the Phoenix. She is an interesting look at how raw power can carry you a VERY long way before we examine anything else.

Rachel's statements and status as a Grey-Summer child provide a lot of arguments for her (Pre-Hickman) Omega Level powers, and her repertoire includes some power house showings with other high tiers, dominating mid tiers and comparable feats to Xavier and Jean Grey.

Her downside being that she has a good number of lackluster showings of being mindcontrolled by people that really shouldn't be able to do that to her.

That said, Rachel has some of the best offense feats and combat showings among the telepaths when she's actually in a fair fight and a major power up to her abilities has added to some hype.

Reasons Rachel deserves this spot:

  • Entering the minds of every person on the planet and cross galactic projection, without any external amps, which only Xavier has done among High Tiers.
  • Psychic attacks that rivaled Xavier's own even as a young teen have taken down mid tiers in one shot, showing some of the best offense feats among her peers.
  • Implied that with Xavier and Jean off the board that she was the most powerful telepath on Earth
  • Repeatedly has gotten around the defenses of Storm who has resisted Xavier, Jean, Shadowking and Emma
  • Giving other high tier telepaths a good fight during her weaker incarnations
  • After she started tapping into more of her power, she wiped out an entire city of nano-sentinels. The Stepford Cuckoos only managed to take out a street's worth before tapping out
  • Cloaked herself and the X-Men from Xavier's telepathy, including phoenix Namor, then saw through Xavier's own illusion. Xavier said she was as much of a threat as he was.
  • Was able to tear into the death god Morrigan's mind and lock her down

7. Mr. Sinister

-

No Caption Provided

A very interesting character on this list. The man is very inconsistent on exactly WHAT powers he possesses in any specific appearance...but as far as we've been able to gather, he is at the very least a high tier telepath to some degree with his sheer knowledge of the art allowing him to perform incredible feats.

Proof that even when half the time you don't have a certain power, what you do with it when you do can make all the difference.

Reasons Mr. Sinister deserves this spot:

  • Inferno....mostly Inferno.
  • After being drained by Rogue, his consciousness dominates her mind and then he uses his drained powers to return himself to his body.
  • Blocked Emma Frost's telepathy on multiple occasions
  • He no sells 80s Psylockes attack while smashing memories inside Jean's mind.
  • After creating his "Sinister System" that perfects his clones, he stalemates Hope Summers who has mimic'd Emma Frost's telepathy
  • Was able to give Xavier some real trouble when he took over his body and mind
  • Was able to break into Jean Grey's mind when she was undergoing her Celestial Judgment

8. Exodus

-

No Caption Provided

Exodus is another one of the interesting characters.

His powers aren't consistent across any of his appearances, but it's also been implied in the past that his power level is based on his faith/fanaticism, and currently stated to be stronger when people believe in him.

Inconsistency can be a good thing when you have high showings like his, but when you have less showings, it means low showings like getting your mind screwed with by a single Stepford Cuckoo becomes more viable.

Still, a happy medium has been found that fits across all but one of his appearances where he seemed to be at his strongest ever (Bloodties).

Reasons Exodus deserves this spot:

  • He fought Rachel Summers on 6 different fronts of the Astral Plane to a standstill while he was actively fighting the other X-Men in the physical world, including Iceman, Rogue and Cannonball.
  • He swatted 90s Jean Grey out of his mind casually while fighting a city busting battle with Holocaust
  • Tanked a full on TP blast from Professor X after fighting off a team of X-Men and Avengers and keeping up a force field over Genosha that he was slowly pulling in to crush the structures.
  • Clashed with Xavier to a degree that thousands of miles away other psychics could feel it and was still aware enough to block attacks from people and hurl Magneto (without his powers) across the room.
  • Enthralled 90's Jean Grey and Wanda while actively fighting a team of X-Men and Avengers while maintaining a city-wide force field.
  • Is stated to be to have unknown limits to his powers
  • Fought off the eternals Uni-Mind telepathically while fighting the Eternals Hex in the real world
  • Is among the most skilled telepaths around, replicating a few of the feats that have made Jean, Xavier and Emma top tiers to differing degrees of success.
  • Capable of rebuilding and containing the minds of high tiers like Xavier in his own

9. Legion

-

No Caption Provided

The Son of Xavier, Legion

Where previously we saw Legion as both a Mid Tier (for his average portrayal) and as a God Tier (for any of his showings when merging or tapping into the full power of his personalities), it was decided that we'd be better off if we gave Legion a clean slate given his recent character development showed he'd gained greater control over his powers and his personalities and that some of his previous anti-feats shouldn't be applied.

With that said, this ranking will be for Legion as of his 2019 Uncanny X-Men appearance and going on through to his current showings in the Krakoa Era.

So why does Legion deserve this spot?

  • He created and maintains a psychic space in the astral plane that allows people to enter into dozens of levels of his mindscape.
  • He locked the Life Seed empowered Nate Grey (a certified God Tier) into his mind and made him believe he'd spent months depowered and under attack in the Age of Apocalypse
  • While containing Nate, he was able to block Jean Grey and Betsy Braddock from entering or observing the inside of his mind until they worked together to break through
  • He went toe to toe with the Eternal Uranos, reaching a stalemate in their minds and facing off against his “arsenal” on the astral plane.
  • Has a unique perspective on TP being able to detect both Onslaughts rebirth as well as Nate Grey's ascension to Life Seed when no one else was able to.

Xemnu, the original Hulk

If there's one thing Xemnu has shown in his very few appearances, it's a lot of raw power. So much so that he could give the people that top our list a run for their money when it comes to power.

In the few times he's been around, he has managed to affect the planet on multiple occasions, such as mind controlling everyone on one occasion, and on another, editing everyone's memories.

He also boasts very powerful telepathic offense, being able to take down beings like The Hulk and Doctor Strange with his Psi-Bolts.

What he does lack though, are showings of skill. Perhaps due to his overall lack of appearances, he has not showcased much variety in his applications of telepathy. This hurts him in comparison to his peers on this tier who do have such showings and capabilities. However, this does not stop Xemnu from being an extremely big telepathic threat, being able to swing against the best of the best by virtue of his sheer telepathic might

Reasons Xemnu deserves this spot:

  • Mind controlled the Earth within moments
  • Has taken down Savage Hulk with his TP on numerous occasions
  • Knocked out Dr. Strange with a Psi Bolt
  • Rewrote the memories of the entire planet Earth to forget about Hulk and view Xemnu as a hero, going so far as to replace Hulk in people's memories with himself
  • Manages to mentally dominate Savage Hulk, Devil Hulk and Green Scar
  • Trapped Cho Hulk and everyone in Seoul in a detailed illusion, giving them specialized fantasies

Moondragon, the face of cosmic telepaths.

While Moondragon is a human, she has operated in space for the majority of her existence. This has allowed her to get some massive range feats, spanning the galaxy. However, her repertoire is not limited simply to range. Aside from this, Moondragon boasts great power, skill and combat ability as seen with the things she's done.

Moondragon has battled the likes of Dr. Strange on the Astral Plane, resulting in a double KO, and defeated the Greek god Hermes in mental combat. At one time, she also defeated the Thanos clone called X who was created to test the telepathic might of Professor X. We can see that she is very adept at telepathic confrontations.

One of her most famous showings is mind controlling millions of a planet's citizen for a prolonged period of time. She has even managed to send her telepathy through time on more than one occasion. We clearly see that she is a very capable, well rounded telepath.

On top of that, she recently merged with an alternate universe version (from the Heroes Reborn universe) of herself. This version was capable of defeating 616 Moondragon in telepathic combat. This merger grants Moondragon access to feats from both versions, making her an even greater threat currently than in the past.

Reaons Moondragon is ranked here:

  • Moondragon senses the panic of hundreds of citizens while maintaining control over millions.
  • Moondragon wiped the memory of the Avengers, which included members like Iron Man, Thor, Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Mar-vell.
  • Moondragon seized psychic control of X (a clone of Thanos designed to test Professor X's telepathic might) and brought out his greatest desire, which was to experience the collapse of reality. This in turn causes his own mind to kill him.
  • Managed to mindlock a weakened Thanos with the help of Cosmo and Mantis
  • Had an explosive fight with Dr. Strange on the Astral Plane that ended up with both of them passing out
  • Defeated the Greek god Hermes in mental combat
  • Moondragon hides the Guardians of the Galaxy's spaceship while Phyla-Vell and Nova fight Zeus, Apollo, and Hera and scans four more gods (Hermes, Artemis, Athena, and Hephaestus) in Mount Olympus.
  • Moondragon intercepts Doctor Doom attempting a body swap with Hulkling and transfers his consciousness with Rocket Raccoon despite Doom's telepathy scrambler

12. Red Onslaught

-

No Caption Provided

This particular version of Onslaught was born from Red Skull's evil and hatred, and powered by Xavier's stolen telepathy. He was a bit of a beast in the short time he was around.

While he appeared for the most part to have only limited thoughts beyond hatred, his sheer raw power was enough to get him to high tier with what little he was able to do.

Reasons he deserves this spot:

  • Created a global "Hate wave" that effected the entire planet, causing violence and giving him control over the populace
  • The Wave's pure strength was enough that just shielding from it for a few hours left Omega Level Telepath Quentin Quire a bloody mess before he finally gave out
  • Was able to control and/or effect resistant minds from Scarlet Witch and Sabretooth all the way up to Doom and Dr. Strange while focusing his assault on others.

13. 5 in 1 Stepford Cuckoos

-

The Sisters of the Hive, The 5 in 1 Stepford Cuckoos....

The cloned daughters of Emma Frost that are linked by a Hivemind stronger than the sum of it's parts

In their original run during New X-Men, we got hints of the Cuckoos power and skill as they were able to completely stomp long standing X-Men psychics as powerful as Oracle and Sage without any seeming effort. It wasn't until we later learned that they were clones of Emma Frost that we began to understand the implications.

The 5 in 1 are 5 psychics that share a single hive mind that is greater than sum of the 5 together. But what really sells them is that despite two of them dying, is that the 3 in 1 were still powerful enough to accomplish feats of global telepathy and defending from high tiers while dominating in confrontations with psychics as powerful as Quentin Quire, Legion and the Teenaged Jean Grey.

Adding on the two sisters who were supposedly stronger than the other three? Well that's a pretty good case for a High Tier.

The continued growth of the girls means the sky is the limit for the hivemind's position. The girls individually possess feats of dominating low tiers, resisting Phoenix fragments and going head to head with some infamous psychics from the ranking, but when grouped together the girls have some pretty impressive feats, even just from the Krakoan Era. These include giving a hand to Emma on a massive Earth to Mars range feat, to Jean on even more massive Earth to Otherworld feat, and later worked together to control the minds of the 5 Eternal Hex to battle the Celestial Progenitor.

While the Cuckoos have mostly had supporting roles in the Krakoan Era, their scaling from their 3 in 1 days and individual growth leaves potential for some serious questions down the line and some fun scaling debate for their powers.

Reason they deserve this spot:

  • Broke Cassandra Nova's mind control over the entire school
  • Stomping the Shiar's “strongest telepath”, Oracle, and locking her in her own mind
  • Assisting in massive cross dimensional range feats from Krakoa to Other World.
  • When they joined the school, they put a psionic block into the minds of all of the X-Men so they would never ask where the girls came from. This included Emma Frost, Xavier and Jean Grey.
  • Scale above the 3 in 1 who were already solid mid tiers by adding 2 more powerful individuals

14. Betsy Braddock

-

No Caption Provided

Betsy Braddock, the current Captain Britain, rounds out the high tier section of our rankings.

It's been a long road, but Betsy's finally broken into high tier with a few more powerful statements and showings from the Krakoan Era for her telepathic power.

Betsy's a very well rounded telepath who's resourcefulness makes her a difficult opponent for anyone, but who lacks a pure telepathic advantage she can exploit in a TP battle without resorting to her "Psychic Knife" as a hax way to accomplish a task.

While certain things about her stats make it hard for her to fend off some challengers in Mid-Tier decisively, it's pretty clear that Betsy's unique approach to telepathy gives her far more room to swing up in a confrontation with other High Tiers than it does for her to swing down.

Betsy's growth is summarized best in creating powerful psychic phenomena as an astral form and earning a few more statements on her strength. There's definitely some room to grow, but there isn't any room to stop her so she's crossed the threshold.

Reasons for Betsy's rank:

  • With Xavier, Emma, and Jean Grey out of the picture, she was considered to be the 3rd strongest mind on the planet.
  • Creator statements say that after AoA Jean unlocked her potential, she became comparable to Xavier and Jean Grey.
  • She has resisted, fought, and defeated Shadow King on several occasions.
  • Kept Shadow King trapped in a mental prison in her mind over a long period of time.
  • She has broken through Dark Archangel's mental defenses, which were compared to the psychic defenses of Apocalypse.
  • For a long period of time, she stored the memories of thousands of people that she mind-wiped in her head, and then restored the memories all at once across North America.
  • The Psychic Knife. While we don't like to include it as a factor too much, it pretty much guarantees that even when she's outclassed, she has a win condition if she can get an opening to strike.
  • She has harmed Juggernaut with a psychic blast in one of her weaker incarnations, despite the fact that he is normally highly resistant to telepathy.

Mid Tier Telepaths

No Caption Provided

It's never easy doing a Mid Tier list.

When you're debating High Tiers, you have a bit of comfort in knowing that you're dealing with "the usual suspects". The feats are mostly known, there's not a lot of surprise additions and for the most part there is a lot of canon information to apply that does most of the hard work for you. There are some preferences sure, but most people are happy to just have a favorite character mentioned among the top dogs.

Debates for Mid Tier are a slugfest. Knock down drag out fights between characters with few appearances, vague statements and the random surprise mention who no one really knows about.

Suffice to say, the further down the list you get, the tougher it to rank people. But having done extensive research and fought tooth and nail over almost every spot, the Psi Viner's collective is pretty satisfied with the accuracy of this list.

1. Cable

-

No Caption Provided

Cable, more accurately "Base" Cable from the early 90s through Revolution Era where he had his Techno Organic virus but began to explore his psionic powers more.

Cable may seem like an interesting choice for the highest Mid Tier telepath given he's mostly known for his guns and having to use most his powers to hold back his T/O virus. But it's important to note that before being repeatedly depowered in the 2000s, the Cable of the 90s was considered to be one of the most powerful telepaths on the planet even with most of his power being restrained, and was able to keep up with or surpass even Jean Grey as far as feats as she was depicted in that Era with some unique and impressive feats.

While he eventually would cure himself of his Techno Organic Virus and become his God Tier incarnation known as "Savior Cable", it's important to note that even prior to reaching that level and after his powers were broken, Cable's telepathic power and skill were considered to be among the best.

Reasons why Cable deserves this spot:

  • Onslaught considered him to be one of the strongest telepaths on the planet and a direct threat to his plans.
  • With Nate Grey's power out of control and effecting telepaths across the entire planet, Cable was still able to restrain him and put his mind back together
  • He reversed Onslaughts mind control on Hulk and the X-Men
  • Even depowered, he's shielded his mind from Xavier, Jean Grey and Emma Frost.
  • Stryfe, his clone who has had his powers augmented to be at their very peak, was so scared of Cable's growth by the end of the 90s that he came to the X-Men for help (and Cable still mindscrewed him for his trouble)
  • With 90's Jean's help, they shielded themselves and the X-Men from a fully powered and amped Onslaught's telepathic assaults
  • His power as a Teen was enough to break the connection between Apocalypse's soul with Stryfe and even bridge the gap between Other World and Earth to reach Jean Grey telepathically.

2. Nate Grey

-

No Caption Provided

What? Nate Grey? Below Cable? Impossible!

Usually you'd be right, but we've seperated Nate Grey into his Pre-Shaman appearances and his post Shaman appearances when he gained control of his powers.

What's important to note about Nate is that while in the 90s he was hailed as the most powerful psychic to ever exist, he kept running into 2 problems.

1) He was having his powers and life force drained by everyone including Threnody and his recreation of Madelyne Pryor.

2) He was a novice and rarely used or his telepathy to great effect or much at all, usually favoring his telekinesis.

While Nate certainly impresses in a few flashy moments, his showings against other telepaths bring him down a lot: Cable getting past his defenses during Nate's most powerful feat, Sinister mapping his mind and handwaving his telepathic attacks, Madelyne Pryor (a novice in her own right) nearly defeating him when they had their telepathic confrontation.

Nate's a powerhouse able to shake the psychic plane with his presence, but ultimately suffers whenever he faces more skilled or comparably strong telepaths who know how to defend against his power even when he's in some of his most powerful incarnations.

Despite Nate having raw power that matches or even surpasses that of most High Tiers, it isn't enough to make up for his poor skills, lack of stamina and lack of factors other than the power that he brings to the table.

Nate isn't a scrub and he can give a hard time to anyone he fights, but his position can be summed up as being exactly where insane raw power and no skill stop carrying you up the ladder.

Reasons why Nate belongs here:

  • Consistently said to be the most powerful psionic the X-Men (including Xavier himself) have encountered, and even the most powerful in existence
  • He quaked the astral planes in AoA and again in the 616 when he arrived on Earth
  • He dragged Xavier's astral form into the real world and nearly overwhelmed his defenses
  • When his powers went out of control he damaged the astral plane enough to harm Jean, Xavier and Psylocke on the other side of the world
  • He's pretty damn strong despite not actually using telepathy often
  • He was able to shield himself from Professor X's scans for weeks

3. Madelyne Pryor

-

No Caption Provided

The Goblin Queen of Limbo.

Maddie has been a consistent thorn in the side of the PsiViners collective since it's inception as she's had more powerset (and power source) changes than most characters who are ranked. This makes it hard for us to nail down where she falls on the list given her raw power has gone from being supported by the Phoenix, to supported by Nate Grey to "She's a ghost so idk how strong she's supposed to be".

Suffice to say, the PsiViners collective has butted heads and shrugged shoulders a lot in the past over this character, but feel like they've nailed down where she is in this current iteration. Because while the power behind her has often changed, Maddie has consistently shown a certain power level, and that she is a uniquely skilled and creative telepath often using whatever powers she has to do things rarely or never done by other psychics....which considering she also has a pension for using magic, is something that makes her stand out among the X-Men psychics.

Maddie does have some big downsides, mostly in regards to combat, but also in that most of her high end skill feats require extremely vulnerable opponents to be as successful as they were.

Reasons Maddie deserves this spot:

  • She is the clone of Jean Grey, which says a lot
  • She's got a unique psychic bomb attack that took Rachel Grey out by surprise,
  • Was able to trap Jean Grey and Magik in a psychic dreamscape
  • Pulled Cable onto to the Astral Plane twice, once through Apocalypse's most busted shielding
  • Her death and resurrection sent out a psychic wave that everyone connected to the astral plane felt.

4. Mastermind

-

No Caption Provided

Jason Wyngarde, the Mastermind.

Right off the bat, we 'need to state for anyone thinking "hey he's not a telepath!" that theres only so much rewriting memories, placing mental blocks and battling on the astral plane that we can ignore before we're forced to let someone in.

Mastermind is an OG X-Villain with incredible capabilities, but more than that, he possesses impressive showings against some of the best High Tiers we have. In fact, if it weren't for the fact that his primary power is illusion based, we'd very clearly have to admit that he's underranked here.

He may be one of the most skilled psychics among the rankings.....but at the end of the day when forced to prove it, he tends to need a little time to set up before he can have a solid chance, which is why he ended up here....since this is about as far as sneak attacks and clever applications can get you without being able to take a solid punch.

Reasons he belongs here:

  • On his deathbed, he pulled Jean Grey and her teammates into his mind and trapped them (and that's while trying to be nice)
  • His surprise attack on Emma Frost left her in a coma for months
  • Rewrote the Sentry's mind to such a degree that it created the monstrous void entity

5. Xorn Jean

-

No Caption Provided

Xorn.....or Xorna.....or rather the future version of Teenage Jean Grey that appeared in the Battle of the Atom crossover Event.

Xorna showed off a handful of impressive abilities in her very short tenure in the books, but ultimately she is here because she defeated the combination of depowered Emma Frost, the 3 in 1 Stepford Cuckoos and the inexperienced Teenage Jean Grey.

This is actually a hugely important factor in dividing the top of mid tier from everyone else using the most important factor we have, "Scaling".

Xorna scales directly above the Xavier Jr. who was defeated by the Cuckoos and Teen Jean, and also above the 3 in 1 who are obviously less of a threat without Emma than they are with her.

This is pretty relevant as we go further down the list and see characters that have directly interacted with each other

Reason she deserves this spot:

  • Mind screwed Magik during a time when we were told you shouldn't even go into her mind.
  • Defeated depowered Emma Frost and the Stepford Cuckoos
  • Frozen or taken out entire rooms of X-Men, including those with strong telepathic defenses like Magneto with his helmet, Cyclops, Magik, Storm, Future Quentin Quire w/ the Phoenix, teen Jean, Kitty Pryde.

6. Blaquesmith

Cable's weird little friend....Blaquesmith.

Blaquesmith is an interesting character in that he's been around since the 90s and that he's one of what we call the "Askani Psychics" telepaths from the future that Cable grew up in.

That makes ranking him interesting for 2 reasons: The first is that theres a massive shift in power levels and portrayals of psychics from 00's onward that make them more powerful than most 90s incarnations and secondly because the Askani psychics all scale to Mother Askani and/or a fully powered Cable in one way or another....

Regardless of the background details that may or may not confuse you, Blaquesmith helped raise and train Cable was a student of a future Rachel Summers himself and was consistently shown to be capable of giving a run for their money to the best telepaths in the 90s. That said time marches onward even for little weirdos from the future and his few feats in the 90s have long since been surpassed.

Reason he deserves this spot:

  • Frequently snuck up on powerful psychics like Cable and Xavier.
  • Froze and then rewrote the memories of Xavier, Jean Grey and all the X-Men after blocking them both out of his mind
  • Briefly went toe to toe with Nate Grey when the latter was throwing a tantrum
  • Onslaught was so concerned with him he tried to destroy him alongside his base.

7. Xavier Jr

-

No Caption Provided

Next up is the alternate future telepath and son (formerly grandson. lol retcons) of Professor X, Charles Xavier Jr.

Xavier Jr has very limited appearances that make his case for being VERY powerful short and sweet, but he also has a major defeat that drags him down immensely.

Xavier Jr is another perfect example of a mid tier, being capable of dominating multiple people at once, but ultimately not measuring up to a high tier getting serious as seen when he surprise attacked Rachel twice only to be one-shot, and when a Generation X era Emma Frost from an alternate timeline crushed him in a single panel.

Still his superiority over other telepaths with planetary reach makes him very much a solid telepath who's above most of his competition in the Tier

Reasons he deserves this spot:

  • He telepathically controlled 4 members of his brotherhood and the Stepford Cuckoos while projecting a psychic construct of Xorn Jean to fight for him and telepathically dominating a Teenaged Jean Grey
  • Even after having his power drained by Teen Jean's Pink form, being stabbed by X-23 and being dragged into the Stepford Cuckoos Hivemind, he was still strong enough to fight back psychically and cloak his escape from 2 teams of X-Men.
  • When confronted by a more powerful and better trained Teenage Jean Grey, he completely no sells her attacks. She also claimed that her defenses would not keep him out for long
  • Mind Controlled the entirety of Cyclops' team to fight each other, including the 3in1 Stepford Cuckoos, and people with high TP resistance like Cyclops, Magik and Kitty Pryde

8. Miss Sinister

-

No Caption Provided

A scientist who thought the best way to accomplish her goals was to download the knowledge and powers of Mister Sinister into her DNA....so of course she's very reasonable.

Miss Sinister is what could best be described as the telepathic equivalent of rookie of the year.

Within days of getting her powers, she was sneaking up on Xavier and putting him on edge as she could sense his powerset and abilities. She even set traps for him in someone's mind.

Suffice to say, she's got Sinister's powers so what she does is expected, but she's also very limited in her showings so she can't climb up higher even with the trouble she gave Xavier without much experience.

Reason she deserves this spot:

  • Being a pain in the ass to top tier psychic Prof. X
  • Resisted domination of Mr. Sinister for an extended period of time when his persona resurfaced....something Prof. X struggled with in the same situation

9. 3 in 1 Stepford Cuckoos

-

No Caption Provided

Welcome to Teenage Wasteland....up first The 3 in 1 Stepford Cuckoos.

We are in an area of the tier where psychics are so close together in powers and abilities that the only things that truly make them above or below each *``other are their unique factors.

The Cuckoos in this incarnation aren't dominating but they are certainly showing off their powers in the most balanced way. The girls have some of their better showings of troubling High Tiers and showcase exactly what a mid tier telepath should be capable of at minimum on the regular. They've got great range and some amazing power feats, but where they shine is skill and showcasing it, with them having taken a couple of mid tiers down a peg and taken a lot of minor feats off high tiers without much trouble. The fact is though, with the 5 in 1 back and active again, it's hard to remember that a lot of what makes them a factor among high tiers is what the girls could do when they were at their weakest here.

Reasons they deserve this spot:

  • Blocked out both Emma and Xavier's telepathy
  • They ripped Quentin Quire's astral form out of Cerebro and mind controlled him another occasion.
  • Invented a psychic attack that utterly devastated Legion's mind with just a touch
  • Dragged Xavier Jr into their mind
  • Saw through Emma Frost's illusion's during Death of X.
  • They linked minds of people around the planet on several occasions

10. Quentin Quire

-

No Caption Provided

Here we have Quentin Quire, the Kid Omega, and the reason for the rule about Omega Level not really meaning too much.

Quire as a telepath initially comes off as pretty impressive. Omega Level, thinks pretty fast, potential Phoenix host, has given some trouble to high tiers.....why not be higher on the list?

Well the consensus is mostly that Quire's fails are too numerous. He's been repeatedly stomped by the Cuckoos, left bloody by Rachel Grey, made to shit him self by Emma Frost and recently caught a case of chronic death syndrome.

However, the Krakoan Era has given us the most consistent Quentin Quire we've ever had and opened up the door for a lot of potential growth in the future.

Quire's growth has seen him accept his failures in the past and confront the overconfidence and under performance that has plagued him his entire existence. He still needs better feats to reinforce it, but it's clear Quentin's past feats seem a lot less like one offs. Suffice to say he is solidly mid tier since this new attitude might make it easier to put his skill to use, but he still needs to prove himself better than some of those old failures a bit more before he can even top out Teenage Wasteland.

Reasons he deserves this spot:

  • His surprise attacks have taken down Emma, the Cuckoos and an entire school of X-Men.
  • Blocking Emma Frost's TP
  • He's blocked out Red Onslaught's psychic hate wave for an entire night.
  • Was able to fool the Pale Girl for hours despite her previously getting the drop on X-Force and being called the closest thing Xavier had felt to Jean Grey.
  • Blocking out Rachel Grey from his mind while he was busy running a very intricate illusion on Wolverine which he had been doing for days
  • Created a complex psychic construct in his mind to pull people into
  • Trapped the Stepford Cuckoos in a psychic loop.

11. Teen Jean Grey

-

No Caption Provided

The Time displaced teenage version from the All New X-Men runs

While she's more hyped as a telepath than her limited showings might support, (a lot of lines are blurred between this version's abilities and what she'd one day become) she nonetheless possesses impressive showings.

There's a lot that could be said about the positives and negatives of how her powers were written, but at the end of the day she's quite possibly the most solidly mid tier psychic we have, capable of swinging up to the border of high tier but still being vulnerable to some of the shenanigans in Low Tier. Ultimately, she's going to give a run to any of the other people in the tier even if she doesn't succeed in the end.

Why Jeen deserves this spot:

  • She couldn't affect Xavier Jr with her powers, but she managed to shield herself and the other X-Men from anything he wanted to do to them for a while
  • Has defeated the likes of Karma and Lady Mastermind
  • Was able to fight off Emma Frost's mental defenses in the deepest, darkest corner of her mind
  • Psylocke was able to get around her Psi-Shields but ended up with a bloody nose for her trouble when Jean kicked her out
  • She was able to stalemate Cosmic shard amped Emma Frost and free teen Cyclops from her brainwashing.
  • 5 seconds after finding out she was a telepath, she broke through the psychic blocks Xavier had placed in her mind and left Wolverine unconscious on the floor
  • She was able to mask her and Cyclops presence from Xorna and Xavier Jr for a good amount of time, despite them working together and Xavier Jr. being amped by a Cerebro Pill

12. Gamesmaster

-

No Caption Provided

Remember him? No? That's ok.

Gamesmaster is an omnipath, capable of linking with everything from people and animals to plants and machines. He is constantly connected to everyone and everything on the planet and he wears headgear in order to contain his immense psychic power.

So why is he so low down here?

Well, Gamesmaster showed up in the 90s to be a sneaky psychic threat, kidnapped Jean Grey and erased the X-Men's memories of her, and then promptly ran away as soon as she broke free and only showed up again to vaguely imply interest in X-23.

Suffice to say being afraid of early 90s Jean makes you a mid tier, but seeing as Cable, Nate, Maddie, Mastermind and Blaquesmith were all around in the 90s and none of them ran away when they saw early 90s Jean coming, it's kinda hard to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Reasons he deserves this spot:

  • He's constantly in contact with every mind on the planet
  • Controlled an entire town including the X-Men
  • Read Cable's mind effortlessly despite everyone from Jean to Xavier and Emma not being able to in that Era.
  • Tweaked Siryn's memories well enough that Xavier and Cable never noticed it
  • Trapped Jean Grey in a psychic prison
  • Broke free from Jean Grey's psychic hold.
  • Mind Controlled the New Mutants which included Karma and Dani

13. Stryfe

-

No Caption Provided

It wouldn't be the Grey-Summers family without clones...and that includes our next entry on the list, Stryfe.

Stryfe is the poster boy for the "Expectation vs Reality" meme. He is the clone of Cable without the techno organic virus and thus should be what Cable would be at his full potential, which is a supposedly godlike psionic...but unfortunately that is not the case.

Despite his origin and statements calling him the most powerful telepath to walk the Earth and such, his feats do not match the hype. This is not to say he has not shown himself a capable telepath. He has done some great things like enthralling Professor X's mind, taking over Cable's body, and being strong enough that it took the combined effort of Xavier and Jean to break into the depths of his mind.

However, his anti-feats really hurt him a lot. From getting mind screwed badly by a Cable whose powers were at a lot point, to being unable to see Betsy who didn't have TP because she was able to defend her mind, to losing to Warpath on the Astral Plane...it's not a good look.

Ultimately, Stryfe lands in our mid-tier list. While it's nothing to scoff at as the mid-tier list is full of great telepaths, it unfortunately falls very flat from what he is supposed to be

Reasons for Stryfe being ranked here

  • Multiple statements abut being one of the, if not the most, powerful telepath on Earth
  • He was able to enthrall Professor X with his telepathy
  • Able to block Dani Moonsters psi arrows which are extremely potent
  • When Stryfe's mind was inside Cable's, he was able to take control of him

14. Thena

-

No Caption Provided

Thena the Eternal! Among a race of telepaths, Thena is among a few who stand out.

Although her use of telepathy is rather limited despite her appearances, the little she's shown is very solid. Her ranking is mostly based off her encounters with Exodus. She managed to stalemate him multiple times throughout a prolonged scuffle between some heroes and the Acolytes. Even when an amped Exodus unleashed his full wrath in a telepathic outburst, she was able to protect the minds of her team from him. She was also able to join minds with Exodus and Man-Beast to take out the Higher Evolutionary.

While she did decently against Exodus, she is very limited in her showings and so can't really go much higher than where she is.

Reasons Thena deserves this spot

  • Thena, along with Exodus and Man-Beast combine their powers to psychically assault the High Evolutionary to the point where his power is completely depleted.
  • Shields her team's minds from an amped Exodus' telepathic assault that would have killed them
  • Thena stalemates Exodus multiple times during their encounter

15. Cosmo

-

No Caption Provided

A telepathic dog in a space suit is what we needed, and that's exactly what Cosmo is.

You might think a telepathic space dog is just a meme character but Cosmo is actually a capable telepath. He has been able to telepathically scan all of Knowhere which is anywhere from city to moon in size. He has also shown a creativity in his telepathic attacks, being able to take out opponents using fear and desires, and even psychic hammer blows that can extinguish minds. Cosmo was one of the 3 telepaths, along with Moondragon and Mantis, to keep Thanos mindlocked after he was severely hurt by the cosmic cube. Cosmo also managed to gleam Silver Surfer's surface thoughts despite the latter's very formidable mental defenses. When Thanos' pain was radiating, Cosmo was able to dampen it, while it was too much for Mantis to bear. Cosmo was also able to figure out the lies being told by Cancerverse Wanda which Mantis failed to do. In an altercation with the Shi'ar, Cosmo was able to block out Oracle's attacks for a prolonged period while simultaneously blocking off the rest of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard with his telekinesis.

Overall, Cosmo is a decent telepath, showing a variety of applications for his telepathy and getting one-ups over fellow telepaths, and sits comfortably in the lower end of our mid-tier list

Reasons Cosmo deserves this spot

  • Mindlocked a weakened Thanos with Mantis and Moondragon
  • Scans the minds of everyone on Knowhere to find a bomb
  • He managed to read some of Silver Surfer's surface thoughts
  • Forced Adam Warlock to see Cosmo's side of things
  • Can utilize a "psychic hammer" attack that can extinguish minds

16. Mantis

Next up on our list is Mantis.

If there is one thing Mantis is going to do, it's phone a friend from far, far away. Mantis has achieved planet hopping all across the cosmos by sending her psyche through plant life, communicating with people in different dimensions, to fighting her son telepathically from lightyears away.

Mantis doesn't stop at just having great excellent range. She has shown a wide array of telepathy. She can mindwipe entire communities of people, turn off pain receptors, boost people's powers and shield minds, cloak the presence of herself and others, transfer her consciousness into foliage, and scramble brains. Some of her best showings include reading the mind of Silver Surfer, mindlocking a weakened Thanos with Moondragon and Cosmo, and last but certainly not least, giving Thanos a hell of a fight telepathically.

However, her vast range and few high end feats don't really make up for her average/consistent levels, and so for now she remains at the lower end of our mid-tier list.

Reasons Mantis is ranked here:

  • she read Silver Surfer's mind
  • Has really massive range feats
  • Managed to give Thanos a good fight mentally
  • Managed to fight her son mentally from lightyears away
  • Mindlocked a weakened Thanos with Moondragon and Cosmo
  • Placed an unconscious Silver Surfer in an illusion to help him recover

17. Sersi

-

No Caption Provided

Sersi is the second Eternal on our list.

Initially, we had her neck and neck with Thena in our rankings, maybe even slightly above her, because Sersi has a lot more showings of telepathy. She has achieved planetary range twice, scanning all the inhabitants on Earth. She has also been able to communicate with people across dimensions. At one point, she managed to create a Uni-Mind for an alien race. As far as combat, she has shown to block telepathy, including tanking a telepathic assault from Exodus. These feats, among others, show the amount and variety of feats she has are well above what Thena has shown.

However, upon closer inspection, we were able to draw a better comparison between them by looking at their fights against Exodus. Whereas Thena was able to stalemate him multiple times throughout a prolonged fight and even shield her team from his amped outburst, Sersi lost to him twice, with their 2nd encounter being a stomp in his favor.

This made it apparent that despite Thena's fewer showings, she is actually the superior telepath by our usual standards/rules, and the gap between them is larger than what he first thought.

Reasons for Sersi's rank

  • Sersi is able to tank Exodus' mental attack
  • Sersi creates a telepathic relay between Thane Ector (Brethren, not Inhuman) and Fool to connect with the race of the Brethren to become their own version of the Uni-Mind.
  • Sersi overloads Black Knights Brain Mine through their telepathic link while she is held captive with her own brain mine.
  • Sersi protects Black Knight from permanent brain damage induced by Apocalypse.
  • Sersi scans the Earth twice to see check on reality when the universe blinked from existence.
  • Sersi guides Captain America and his team in an alt dimension to her dimension while holding back the heat from the atmosphere of the dimension

18. Dani Moonstar

-

Mirage aka Dani Moonstar, one of the most underrated mutant psychics in the X-Men

As a member of the New Mutants Dani spent most of her childhood being picked on by Emma Frost, Shadow King, Brood Xavier, and Legion's wayward personalities. If that wasn't enough, she was also stalked by the Demonic Bear Entity that killed her family. So she's been around the block as far a telepathy goes.

Normally we would rank both Dani and her teammate Karma in low tier due to their powersets only being partially telepathy, however we went deep into every psychic put in front of us and were pleasantly surprised by Dani and Karma's abilities and how they measured up.

Dani possess a wide range of skill mostly in affecting mental connections and mental defense. But where she really shines is her ability to manipulate psychic energy, being one of the better psychics in this regard going as far as taking away and restoring life force using her psychic energy and emotions.

She's not to be under estimated, een if she is currently at the lower end of the tier.

Reasons she deserves her spot:

  • Has repeatedly been able to defend against powerful psychics like Shadow King, Xavier and Emma Frost even in her least experienced state.
  • Able to effect powerful minds despite their defenses like S'ym, Selene, Legion, Karma and Magik in her classic era.
  • Psychic power is strong enough to create solid illusions

Karma....she possesses people.

The hard part about being on the lower end in a Tier is that you constantly have to fight to hold your spot against everyone in the tier below you to prove you're in a different league than them.

Karma is an above average psychic, with moderate showings of power and a handful of epic feats. She's got the depth of history and showings to back any claim she makes about being above the Low Tiers, but still isn't really winning many of the all out slugfest in this tier.

She's on the low end of mid tier, but is not weak by any stretch of the imagination.

Reasons she belongs here:

  • Her mind control is stated to be as powerful as Classic Charles Xavier's
  • She's fought off and beat back Shadow King as a child despite a full possession
  • Was able to control Amora the Enchantress and force her to use her powers.
  • Able to mind control Sage who's mind is incredibly resistance
  • Broke Loki's control of Magik with her possession.

XANDRA! THE DAUGHTER OF X MAKES THE CUT IN THE LAST SECOND!

The newest character created to make Mid Tier, Xandra, was voted in by a large margin but her position was left in the air due to a very difficult combination of truly immense raw power and a interesting but small set of skill feats.

She's quite possibly the most powerful telepath in the bottom half of Mid Tier, but aside from some cool appearances and a lot of hype and potential, she hasn't done enough to break into the tier to make herself known.

Reasons she deserves this spot:

  • When she was killed her telepathic scream was so powerful that psychics across the galaxy heard it and she made sure it not only contained all her memories but also her very genetic code so that her dad in another galaxy could hear her.
  • Accidentally amping Rogue’s powers
  • Busting past the mental defenses of Delphos
  • Is stated to be very powerful by virtue of being the child of Charles Xavier
  • Deemed to be a big threat, being called an “Omega-Level Weapon”

Low Tier

No Caption Provided

This time we have the daunting challenge of discussing our rankings for the Low Tier telepaths.

Now, before we go any further, it's important to note that "Low Tier" doesn't mean weak. In fact, in a handful of these cases, it's just the opposite. Most members of this Tier are psychics who either lack raw power, skill or just a decent number of feats in a certain area in order to make it to a higher tier when compared to other psionics in the franchise. That said, in the end, what they were judged on the most was how they stacked up against each other and their betters as all around psychics. Everything from combat, to skill, to unique showings and range were factored in and their anti feats assessed and measured.

Again it's VERY important to note that Low Tier doesn't mean weak since many of these characters have solid performances against some of our best psychics and impressive feats in their own right. However, that doesn't excuse their failures, limitations or anti feats.

All-in-all, this was a rough time for the PsiViners collective to try to crunch together this section of the Tier List as characters here had very specific strengths and weakness that didn't always line up for an easy comparison of "who's better?".

Still. despite it all, we came together and were able to put together the final part of our list with some confidence.

1. Mesmero

-

No Caption Provided

Opening up the tier list in it's number 1 spot is the tricky Mesmero.

Mesmero is the perfect example of what's to come in Low Tier. For the majority of his existence, Mesmero's psionic abilities were limited to hypnotism. He was for the most part only able to control people when he made direct eye contact with them, and while he did have psionic energy at his disposal, he was very limited in it's use outside of mind control. But then Weapon X was able to increase his power levels to the point where he was considered one of the most powerful mutants on the planet with both telepathy and mind control being amplified to immense levels. Mind you. this was years after he'd managed to control teams of X-Men and 2 different Phoenix hosts, because he didn't need his amp to do that.

Now with all of that said, why isn't he higher up on the list? Well, Mesmero has a massive downside in that despite his great power, he was absolutely fodderized by Rachel Grey at her base power levels, and while he was later able to affect and control her, that was mostly due to outside forces making her vulnerable. In fact, while his mind control has always been exceptionally potent (see: controlling Jean Grey & Rachel Summers as Phoenix host) his actual psychic powers in a fair fight haven't given anyone trouble since the 60s.

Still, in any situation when you don't see him coming, you are in serious danger regardless of your tier.

Some reasons he belongs here:

  • Mind controlled Phoenix Jean Grey and the X-Men
  • Mind controlled Phoenix Rachel Summers and Excalibur
  • After his amp controlled an entire Bosnian army to walk into the desert and commit suicide
  • Shielded himself and his team from Rachel Grey & Cerebro
  • After exploiting her damaged powers, was able to mind control Rachel Summers into taking out a whole team of X-Men.

2. Selene

-

No Caption Provided

The Black Queen of the Hellfire Club.

Selene is a unique character, in that her psychic powers stem from both her unspecified mutant powers as well as her status as a long lived semi-magical being.

While primarily mind control spells and hypnosis are her go to psychic powers, she has shown true telepathy and the ability to go at with psychics over the years.

There's no doubt that Selene is a force to be reckoned with, having several feats of fighting a young Rachel Summers, some one ups on Emma Frost and even an exchange with the Hulk under her belt. However, most if not all of her feats lean more toward skill then power, with a young and starving Rachel Summers fresh out of a Interment Camp giving her a run for her money even with surprise, while a young Dani Moonstar has repeatedly brought her down with illusions and psychic attacks that Selene really should've been prepared for.

The real problem with Selene is that her best psychic feats were against the 2nd generation of X-Kids and they've all massively improved over the years, whereas Selene's limited appearances have made it so even her most recent losses were 2 power ups ago for some of her opponents.

Still, with magic, hypnosis, illusions, and telepathy, Selene's got a handful of psychic tricks...it's just not her best bet.

Some reasons Selene deserves this spot:

  • Was able to use her magic to battle Emma Frost telepathy for control of a man....his head exploded.
  • Withstood several attacks from an enraged Phoenix Rachel Summers.
  • Took control of Emma Frost, mindwiped her, and forced her to rejoin the Hellfire Club
  • Locked Teenaged Rachel Summers and Magma in a mind link and had them fighting to defend her for a time.
  • Brought Grey Hulk to his knees with a psiblast

3. Apocalypse

-

No Caption Provided

Another of the worlds oldest mutants, Apocalypse is number 3

With Apocalypse comes a challenging case of the 80s supervillain. He, like Selene, Magneto, Dr. Doom, and half the big name villains of the day had some form of mysterious psychic power to him in one way, shape or form that was eventually forgotten and mostly ignored in favor for his more standard powerset. However while Apocalypse's rare psychic showing would be forgotten about, he would become pretty well known for having incredible psychic defenses, able to block out the X-Men psychics even near death with showings against the powers of Jean Grey, Rachel Summers, Cable and others on his list of mental nosells.

Apocalypse would mainly be known for controlling people through unknown means of brainwashing when he turned them into his horsemen. This has never been shown to be telepathic as we've seen everything from his blood to Celestial technology be the driving force behind the transformations of the horsemen, but never a definitive reasoning for their subconscious connections to him afterwards. And moreso than that, we've seen him distinctly use technology to help him possess people or to transform them into his new host body.

At a certain point if you had asked any member of PsiViners if they seriously considered him a telepath of any note, most of them would've said "nope" and moved on.....I mean the guy didn't even have the power to enter the astral plane on his own at one point, so that should end the talk, no? No!

The Krakoan Era (and the Age of X-Man before it if we're honest) gave Apocalypse some of his first solid TP feats in ages with showings of raw power, skill and some nice range feats to boot. While that's always an interesting addition, a big part of the reason he actually got ranked is because even without those new Telepathic showings, big blue still has some of the most insane mental defense on the list, which kinda makes it hard to argue around him even with limited showings.

A few solid TP feats + utterly ridiculous defense is a formula that can overcome a lot of the question marks on a otherwise generic 80's power use.

Some reasons he deserves this spot:

  • Did I mention the sheer number of telepaths that he's defended from? Jean Grey, Onslaught, Psylocke, Cable, Rachel Summers...etc
  • Telepathically connected to Rictor who was trapped between universes.
  • Controlled hundreds of people in London to embrace love and affection in the Age of X-Man.
  • Pulled Hulk into his memories.
  • When separated from his body, his psyche has repeatedly dominated others for control of theirs

4. Mastermind [Martinique Wyngarde]

-

No Caption Provided

Mastermind's daughter....Mastermind

The older sister of Regan, Martinique was actually first introduced to the X-Men books as a highly powerful psychic opponent and has consistently showcased power levels above and beyond what her Father was capable of.

In fact, Martinique may very well be the most powerful person in the low tier with some great defense to boot.

The downside for Martinique is that she doesn't even have half the appearances of her younger sister, and that's not saying much, so it really does hurt her when she gets anti-feats despite some truly impressive showings under her belt. She'd probably be much higher on our list if she had more appearances, but alas she's a one and done in most showings.

Reasons Martinique deserves this spot:

  • Trapped the entire city of San Francisco in a psychic illusion of the 60's for days and possibly weeks with the effect growing as she went on. Only those with psychic shielding could resist the effects.
  • Repeatedly blocked Emma Frost from contacting anyone in San Francisco, entering her mind or breaking her hold on the city for a time.
  • Despite being trapped in a machine for months that used her powers to control X-Corps members half a country a way, was still powerful and aware enough to drag Chamber's consciousness into her mind and manipulate him.
  • Able to trick Cable and the other X-Men team for a time despite his powers.
  • Repeatedly stated to be more powerful then her sister and Father despite their feats.

5. Lady Mastermind [Regan Wyngarde]

-

No Caption Provided

Mastermind's other daughter....Lady Mastermind

The younger sister of Martinique, Regan is a different creature all together. Where Martinique has powerful feats on large scales, Regan seems to be more limited but far more creative in her applications of her powers.

While she's probably the weakest of the Mastermind's, she's got way more showings than her sister and a lot more interesting psychic exchanges to examine and unlike her dad and sister, we've got some confirmed growth in her power levels to support her case as well.

Ultimately though, she's not on her dad's level of skill or her sister's level of power, so she's not gonna make it far in a direct comparison to them.

Reasons Regan deserves this spot:

  • Created a massive illusion of Fin Fang Foom attacking a city that led to the military being called.
  • Trapped Lifeguard and Sage inside Sage's own mind using illusions so real they would both die if they were killed in the mindscape.
  • Surprise attacks and locks down Emma Frost with an illusion of chains and restraints for a time.
  • Forced a Mummumdrai out of her mind after breaking through it's mental blocks.
  • Despite being near death from M-Pox, was able to enslave a building full of people so they would die with her when she did.

6. Blindfold

-

No Caption Provided

Blindfold is....scary.

While her primary power is actually precognition, her abilities were found to be beyond that, and she's proved it more and more through her interactions with Legion. Between the two of them, they managed to make each other much more manageable, both as people and as characters with Blindfold having gotten some of her best feats against or with the help of Legion.

That said, she's VERY limited in her showings of telepathy, with on panel statements about her potential actual implying that she still had some work to do on her self before we actually saw what she truly capable of.

Why she should have this spot:

  • She turned off Legion's powers with a thought.
  • Resisted Legion's merged mind trying to absorb her astral form.
  • With her full power, unlocked was able to temporarily down the 3 in 1 Stepford Cuckoos.
  • Consistently able to sense things other telepaths like Emma Frost, the Stepford Cuckoos and Legion cannot

7. Sage

-

No Caption Provided

Tessa aka Sage

Sage is a very difficult character to get a handle on in a Tier list. Her classic appearances had her sort of a psychic, but mostly a really analytical character who eventually evolved into a full blown psychic in the 90s. Claremont later wrote her as an X-Man who's computer brain let her do everything from downloading information from the internet, to processing the weak point in objects to, seeing and manipulating people's bio chemistry.....yea.

At a certain point Sage, became an unhackable, uncontrollable and unrivaled mind who was stated to have been born with indomitable willpower backed by training from Charles Xavier to give her unrivaled defenses, but of course we've seen her controlled by Karma, turned off by Esme Cuckoo, and mindscrewed for a time by Lady Mastermind. And that's just the mid & low tiers.

Add to that the fact that she rarely uses her telepathy and that by her own admittance she "is not much of a telepath" and we've got a situation where a strong mind isn't necessarily a powerful psychic but is capable of some really surprising feats.

Reason Sage deserves this spot:

  • Contained the memories of Roma and all of the minds from the multiverse that Roma had absorbed.
  • Restrained Shadow King and trapped him in her head and then inside his host body.
  • Broke into the mind of Nate Grey empowered Madelynn Pryor
  • Blocked and later broke the control of Bogan over herself and others despite Bogan controlling Emma Frost and Rachel Summers at different points.
  • Her psi scream overwhelmed 90s Jean Grey and Psylocke

8. Monet

No Caption Provided

M. aka Penance aka Monet St. Croix.

Monet is a funny story. For years, Monet has been highly critiqued by the PsiViners group for being one of the least powerful psychics among X-Men characters by showings and isn't helped that a good deal of her early appearances aren't actually her. Srangely enough, this has actually helped her to stand out a bit more compared to her contemporaries.

A student of Emma Frost, a lot of her early feats that we examined seemed to vaguely or directly scale off of Emma while alluding to her own special knack for telepathic shenanigans that often surprised Emma.

As we moved later down her history, M's got a handful of notable skill feats and impressive defenses that make a good case for her. And it kinda helps that she's got the confidence to mock High Tiers like Jean Grey and Rachel Summers for not measuring up to her standards.

Monet might be surprising, but ultimately her telepathy is limited heavily by a lack of use, with some of her best runs mentioning it only in passing or using it for everyday things. Hopefully we'll see more use in the coming years. But for now, this is the appropriate spot for M on the list.

Reason M deserves this spot:

  • Broke free of, and later freed Emma from Adrienne Frost's psychic memory trap.
  • Read the minds of the X-Men team despite Teen Jean Grey shielding their thoughts
  • Broke through Exodus' mental blocks put on his mindslaves.
  • As a child, repeatedly blocked Emma Frost from reading or manipulating her mind.
  • Discovered memories in Polaris' head that had been blocked and rewritten by Mastermind as a child despite Jean Grey, Emma Frost and Xavier having previously worked to repair Polaris' mind.

9. Cerebella

No Caption Provided

-

Martha Johanson aka No-Girl aka Cerebella.

Martha Johanson is....tricky.

Years of background appearances and only small periods of attention have left her power levels inconsistent and even her best showings with question marks on how consistent she is.

The low showings are massively low, with things like being bullied by a Quentin Quire who was utterly curbstomped by the Stepford Cuckoos. Or being unable to hide her presence from a room full of guards. We have to take the bad with the good and there is a lot of good....she just isn't as impressive as even her debut would've led you to think.

Reasons Martha deserves this spot:

  • Her "psychic chafe" attack negates mutants powers and even shut down Emma Frost in diamond form.
  • She was able to steal the knowledge of Spiderman's secret identity from Rachel Summers mind.
  • Her psibolt killed Zero one of Hope's Lights.
  • Was able to mind swap 5 people at once repeatedly and later to possess a dead body after training with Shadow King.
  • Powerful enough to burn out 4 of Mojo's psychics that were trying to restrain her powers.

10. Oracle

-

No Caption Provided

Context is key, and there's a lot of context to Oracle's best feats.....mostly that she needed surprise or help to pull off what ultimately was something pretty minor to begin with.

She's the victim of being surpassed by the telepaths she was originally introduced to compliment and then being toyed with by their students.

Her best showings would barely rank for even most people among mid tier and unlike most of them, she doesn't have a High Tier name to drop to defend her case. So Oracle is lower on our list compared to when we initially assessed her.

Reasons she deserves this spot:

  • Destroyed a room with telepathy after making psi contact with a brood.
  • She shut down Teen Jean's pink form briefly
  • Shielded the Imperial Guards mind from Phoenix Echo boosted Rachel
  • Blocked out Mantis and Cosmo the space dog's telepathy

11. Kwannon

No Caption Provided

Last but not least comes the biggest problem child of our list, the new Psylocke, Kwannon the psychic ninja.

Kwannon's ranking here comes with the understanding that in the very near future, she will likely shoot up the list and make any reasoning we make for this current placement seem inaccurate. That said, until that happens, we need to be honest about what we're working with, which isn't too much.

Kwannon's best showings are mostly against people who aren't that notable, or usually done with the help of High Tiers in some large way. She lacks raw power and skill feats beyond her psychic knife and, well, the psychic knife doesn't do much to help her considering the lack of notable feats that her's actually has. She's really not done too much so far, even considering her classic appearances.

Still, we accept that Kwannon is one of the most prominent mutants on Krakoa at the moment and certainly in the franchise, getting huge levels of exposure across the x-titles as a headliner since the beginning. Suffice to say, any day could be the day her ranking shoots up on our list, but until then, she's rounds out our low tier section of telepaths

Reasons she for her ranking:

  • Took her some time, but she broke free of Mastermind's control
  • Broke through to and contained a traumatized Betsy's Psi-ghost
  • Was able to stun Malice controlled Emma Frost with her psychic knife.
  • Was able to partially undo Emma Frost's mindwipe on Wolverine.
  • Her death from the Legacy Virus sent a psychic shockwave around the world

Here's a tier list for majority of the prominent telepaths! Feel free to share your thoughts or discuss placements and such! Feedback would be greatly appreciated

Xemnu being below some of those lads is....it's definitely a choice, anyway. I get the skill >> raw power deal but you'd be hard pressed to stick guys like them above someone with such a distance away from said feats. Outside of that, I'd say the list is mostly solid from what I'm seeing minus a few things I'd probably rearrange. Would like to see a outsiders list (non-X telepaths like Mentallo, Psi-Lord, Adaptoid, Sentry, Lady Phoenix, etc) and a God-Tier list (Savior, Life-Seed, Orrgo, Galactus, etc) just to see how they'd look in comparison to everything else.

Xemnu's spot is actually debatable even within our group, so I can see why you're questioning his rank. ultimately, his lack of skill showings (at least compared to the other people in the tier or above him) and actual telepathic combat aside from just psi bolting people make him just a smidge below them. Like sure he could definitely take wins off people ranked above him, but overall they are more well rounded and thus were deemed to be a smidge above Xemnu.

We'll have to look over Overmind again. I remember we briefly checked him out but not enough to get a real gauge of his capabilities

yeah xemnu is def a tricky one. I personally would still love to see it properly hashed out between xemnu and the likes of exodus, rachel, sinister. it might have been done before iunno(it probably has lol) but I don't remember ugh.

Would love to hear about the other stuff you would rearrange though. The mid and low tier especially was more difficult to arrange.

Yeah we considered doing like all the psis, but we'd need more time to get familiar with everyone and what not enough to rank them. dunno if they even need a separate list since this one includes non x-telepaths anyway like moondragon, xemnu, cosmo etc. The hope is that in time, we'll get to everyone lol

I understand . I only asked because I'm more of a feat guy and he's feats are definitely superior to some of the high tiers ( at least to some degree).

Sentry has assisted planetary TP showings and some other smaller but impressive showings, but he's also well known as a black box of TP that resists nearly everything. Interesting gimmick in that sense

What telepathic feats does the sentry have?

Basically, Sentry has wiped the planet of memory of his existence, including telepaths like Xavier and Emma Frost. His Void self is well-known to induce fear symptoms from his mere presence and causes doubt in them.

He is more impressive in psi-defenses, where he can resist Emma Frost and Professor X from his mind.

The downfall of Sentry as a psi is that he does not utilize it a lot, which means he does not really know how to use it effectively. A good chunk of his feats were done subconsciously or passively.

Looking at him realistically, he is a dangerous threat to telepaths, but ranking him as a telepath himself, he is worse than Nate Grey skill-wise, which is indeed a statement, considering Pre-Shaman Nate Grey is notorious for having high tier showings, yet ends up in mid tier because his lack of skill allows characters like Sinister and Xavier to clown on him if they actually tried.

@pyrofn: I honestly thought that it was reed who created a machine to wipe the memories of the planet, I never really took him as a telepath I thought that the telepathy was void's ability not the sentry.

Power is range and/or strength of TP, so like being able to cover large distances, huge numbers of people, having naturally impressive stats in general or as potential. Raw power generally is just big number + good scaling with direct overpowering, no subtlety about it.

Skill is experience/overall intelligence in combat when it comes to TP, this can appear as simple versatility, being able to set up advanced traps (like Shadow King's skill in manipulating the Astral Plane to his benefit) or having lots of psychic training to go back on, familiarity with their psychic powers. Skill is more important than power as having lots of it can allow a fairly mediocre telepath to hold off on someone a lot more powerful (as opposed to being powerful with low skill, something that doesn't go too far generally) but the best telepaths have both in abundance.

Best example is from the Rachel/Emma fight: Rachel has more power, but Emma has more skill, and so she can outclass her stronger opponent with difficulty because she knows how to use her powers in more nuanced ways. Not always the case, but useful for reference.

@professorrespect: interesting interesting. It´s interesting that range is power but it makes sense

Eh, it’s….a little more complicated than just range=power. It’s more what you do with that range that classifies one’s power.

Not to knock range, since feats like Rachel or Xandra projecting across galaxies is a grand feat of power.

But we should also take into account characters like Mantis are also capable of feats of range and have nowhere near the same level of feats as even the upper half of mid-tier.

And Saturn Girl is the biggest example of how range≠power argument.

TL;DR Range is included in power, but it does not equal power itself.

Sorry i didn´t write that quite well but i just did not know that range is a way to measure power. Mostly because i never tought about how to quantify telepathy feats.

@psiviners319 A few questions about the rankings.

1.Why is Exodus below Sinister? They have similar feats of blocking or matching Emma Frost and losing to Charles Xavier with good battles but Exodus has the perks of fully matching Rachel Summers with only half his attention and tanking Professor Xavier with his attention divided to a high level

2. How powerful are Legion and Xemnu compared to other telepaths

3. Are the Stepford Cuckoos now equal with each other

4. Does Mdelyne Pryors magic affect her telepathy and was this considered for the level of her telepathy

5. How powerful is Quentin Quire compared to other telepaths

@marygcrisostomo: Hi, I guess I'll take this one.

1- Exodus as stated has the problem of his faith amp. We try our best not to factor in any outside power sources or other things that would change from situation to situation.

In the Rachel example for instance he states that his powers are based in belief and that he has never believed in something more then his cause at that moment. That would mean that, even though he's shown incredible multitasking in the past his performance against her there is outside his usual levels.

Similarly his 2 confrontations with Xavier.

During their first meeting in Bloodties Exodus is able to withstand a full power psibolt from Xavier while maintaining his mindcontrol over Jean Grey and several others as well as crushing a city with his forcefield.

During their next meeting in X-Men Legacy, he was in possession of all of Xavier's memories and was using them against him. Xavier would eventually overpower him and threaten to turn his powers off completely if he continued the battle.

Factoring that in we had to consider Legacy and Messiah complex to be as close to normal for him as possible since there's no statements or outliers in either appearance that would make you question his abilities.

Sinister however doesn't have anything to question. While there's no doubt that Exodus is stronger then him in raw power, Sinister himself scales directly to the raw power of Emma Frost (via a stalemate against Emma Frost) who isn't exactly weak. The fact that Sinister has given Emma trouble on multiple occasions and yet Exodus himself admits that he's unable to use his TK while battling her (something he was even able to do against Xavier under the same writer) it points to the fact that Sinister is likely more skilled then Exodus. A point further proven by the fact that Exodus himself considers Sinister one of the most skilled telepaths on the planet.

Long story short, Sinister generally comes across as more skilled in mental manipulation and where his power levels are pretty consistent Exodus has massive outliers and other performances marred by his own admitted amp.

2- Both of them would be considered about as powerful as Jean Grey and Professor X give or take. With Legion easily pushing beyond that given his statements of having "multiple Omega level- telepathic personalities".

3- The Cuckoos are hard to judge individually. Generally by statements Sophie > Esme > Mindee > Celeste> Phoebe. And by feats Esme > Sophie > Celeste > Mindee > Phoebe.

There's various statements about like "whoever wears the black/white outfit is the dominant mind of the day" that we could consider. But Esme is the only Cuckoo who's stated and shown to be able to beat and over power other Cuckoos at their current levels.

4- Any and all telepathy feats for Maddie were considered. Barring things like sleep spells or control magic that she doesn't have to actively maintain.

5- Quentin isn't easily compared to other psychics. His greatest outliers are so far above his norm that he's almost a different character. However the best interpretation of him currently is that his raw power was enough to keep up with Emma Frost in restraining the Phoenix Force for a short time and while he himself isn't compared to her, the Pale Girl (who's power Xavier compared to Jean Grey) was unable to see through his illusion for hours.

The best most reasonable outcome is that he is close to Emma or Sinister in raw power at his ABSOLUTE best (a great deal less on most days) but that his real strength is the complexity of his mind and use of his powers rather then pure raw power.

1- Eh... Yes....ish? We don't consider that particularly noteworthy given the Cuckoos at the same event and Teen Jean when she had just arrived in the present (barely a telepath) have also been able to read his mind.

2- We need to wait and see how the event plays out before we can fully evaluate the Brood feat. Suffice to say it's hard to pinpoint what's happening when and where across the 2 books and it's caused some debate.

3. Mastermind had been locked into a machine running 7 illusions at once for days. While getting out is impressive for her.....its ultimately more of an anti feat then anything else.

It’s a bit of both.

She has recently been mind-controlled by Tran, Karma’s brother (who should possibly be near or equal Karma in strength based on the fact that his powers were added to hers for years and we see no signs that either sibling were nerfed after their separation). She is being gate-kept by the anti-feats she accrues from other psi’s.

But, Kwannon also barely had anything to begin with. And it does testify to Kwannon’s will to keep on fighting that same amount of time. She is not climbing off of this feat, but it’s there is some gems to glean from the feat.

Long story short, Sinister generally comes across as more skilled in mental manipulation and where his power levels are pretty consistent Exodus has massive outliers and other performances marred by his own admitted amp.

Do his amps count if he can do them at will without prep? Shadow King only gets a boost when he has prep but Exodus can get a boost without prep as long as there is faith in him by him or other people. And what about his ability to get stronger through psionic draining. On this drain topic also does Jeans big draining abilities contribute to her rank and other telepaths who can drain

2- Both of them would be considered about as powerful as Jean Grey and Professor X give or take. With Legion easily pushing beyond that given his statements of having "multiple Omega level- telepathic personalities".

Is that statement before or after the Age of Hickman? The retcon might cancel out that statement of having omega level telepath personalities

The common denominator is that Phoebe Cuckoo is the wosrt.

4- Any and all telepathy feats for Maddie were considered. Barring things like sleep spells or control magic that she doesn't have to actively maintain.

Why are things like that barred for contribution to her rank. What is the rule for determination of telepathy comparing to magic

What feats are outliers aside from his feats in Dark Phoenix - Endsong

@psiviners319 I also want to know about

1 - According to this list Jean Grey and Charles Xavier were at a tie that only ended in 2023. What are the feats in 2023 that broke the tie?

2 - How powerful is the complete Stepford Cuckos comparing to Emma Frost and how powerful is the 3 Stepford Cuckoos to Emma Frost

3 - Are the psychic weapons of Betsy and Moonstar and Kwannon are counted as telepathy as long as it is not doing physical damage?

4 - Where would be the ranking of Uranos Thanos Stephen Strange SilverSurfer Martian Manhunter in this list?

@marygcrisostomo:

1- He's not able to amp himself at will in any given situation. We accept that on Krakoa he might have the faith of others to boost him, but as we've seen just during the last few events Sins of Sinister and Judgement day, Exodus' power levels can fluctuate to where he's either ungodly powerful and gigantic or to a point where the Eternal's Unimind can overwhelm him quickly based solely on his belief. We took him at points when he was least effected by amps.

Shadow King's amp's factor more into the evaluation of his skill. Each of the amps that he's employs are completely unique and required in-depth knowledge of the astral plane and psychic energies.

We don't factor in psi draining because it's never been shown to increase either Exodus or Jean's telepathy especially (add to that that Exodus has only ever done this once). Regardless though, a power up that isn't consistent or varies based on location, time, or other various factors that could change can't be compared to other characters who can replicate their feats at any time.

2- Legion's powers are stated to "Power Manifestation", so while other Omega Level mutants may no longer have that title, we find it hard to discredit his statement about his individual powers given in this instance given he himself is still an Omega Level Mutant.

Suffice to say these personalities have reached the edges of the galaxy with their telepathy, erased the entire planets minds and done battle with other high tier telepaths. The fact that there is more then one of them he has access too would support the conclusion, even though he is capable of reaching far and away beyond what he's capable of.

3- Generally Phoebe has gotten very little solo exposure among the Cuckoos and when she has gotten it she's usually been shown assisting Quentin Quire and not in a combat role like the other Cuckoos. She has however shown the most individual range of a Cuckoo with her Earth to the moon feat projection feat.

4- The best way to explain this would be that anything that requires the magical character to use their mind or will power to maintain a mental attack/control is 100% considered telepathy. Selene and Maddie especially have several feats of using devices, charms or spells to induce mass sleep or coma that specifically isn't telepathic or mental in any way. However for the most part, hypnotism, trances, and control feats were given to them aside from those select few that clearly weren't psychic, psionic, or a magical variation of those abilities.

Very few feats were effected

5- It is specifically his appearance in that event that I'm referencing as his power levels are massively out of the ordinary and create a scaling issue across the entire board if we accept them as normal.

1 - Okay that seems to be a good reason for Exodus to be under Sinister that I can agree with. Talking on psi drain I considered it not for the ability to boost their own power but their ability to inflict a drain on the foes. I figured this is a part of the unique factors you mention for deciding telepathy strength that is mentioned

2- Legion can be an omega level in every power?

3 - Does power level determine the distance of range?

4 - How do you then gauge telepathic interactions with magic such as Jean Grey and Madelyne Pryors spells in Dark Web or telepaths breaking out of magic hypnotism as Amora and Selene

5- He is back in X-Force as an aged up version of himself. Will this be considered a separate entity ?

5- He is back in X-Force as an aged up version of himself. Will this be considered a separate entity ?

2) He was stated as such once. It’s not certain whether Hickman’s retcon does away with this, since it was established pre-Hickman era. But considering Legion’s power reaches cosmic levels at his best, it is entirely possible.

3) Yes and no. It’s heavily dependent on what a telepath does with that range and how consistent their characterization is. See the aforementioned Saturn Girl example in comment 22.

4) Direct statements and what actually happens in-story. Magic telepathy is also a thing that makes it murkier, but when looking at the Dark Web feat, it is clearly stated to be Maddie using both her mutant powers and magic. And we clearly see Madelyne legitimately in the joint minds of Jean and Magik.

For Selene, her powers of hypnotism are psionic in nature, given that she called one of her techniques a “psychic caress”, which was supposed to make Grey Hulk become a blank slate.

For Amora, she is the exact prime example used for displaying the differences in a magic power that has a mental effect and magic telepathy. Amora is a goddess of love who employs her physical beauty to enthrall men to her whims. Her eyes, her voice, whatever physical aspect of her is capable of entrancing a man to her wiles. Contrast it to Amora battling on the Astral Plane, reading minds, and manipulating memories. It’s a tricky subject to go down and it is sometimes guess work that we have to debate with each other over to determine what is not clearly spelled out in the comics.

5) I think so. Teen Jean Grey is on the tier list for how differently she is compared to current adult Jean and there was a brief plot point that questioned if the O5 were the real deal back in the comics. It was soon confirmed to be the real deal, but we didn’t know it at the time. Ultimately, she still worked real well and was a point of comparison to most characters, so we kept her.

If this version of Quentin actually shows feats to where we cannot ignore him as a one-off, then he would be considered a separate character. Of course, this isn’t absolute, in order to account for any plot-device shenanigans that would somehow say that the old man is 616 Quentin, which would be very unlikely, but not impossible.

TL;DR @professorrespect ain’t doing Jack squat to his Quentin RT for this old man Quentin.

1) Jean’s placement as the top telepath is a very recent thing (relative to comic publishing). The feats that tipped in Jean’s favor were her recent cosmic level feats, as presented in her section of the op. I think it was generally agreed unanimously from Knull to the Progenitor timespan.

2) Most likely, the Five-In-One are stronger.

3) Their psi-weapons are kind of a “do what the plot-tells-them” sort of deal. We have seen Betsy damage Sentinels with her psi-knife. Dani’s Arrows have also solo’d Sentinels (with Technarchy material granted, but that same issue had Hope stating Technarch/Phalanx material like Warlock is remarkably difficult to read with Emma’s powers) as well. And don’t get us started on Quentin’s constructs.

So, we keep them as a separate power to be safe in most cases. There are exceptions, but they are not the rule.

4) We have no opinion on those characters at this time.

Will you be adding to your tier list the other telepaths from Marvel? Other than the characters I asked there are also other X-Men telepaths missing such as Third Eye and Mentallo. A telekinesis tier list is also a good idea

For now, the tier list is mostly X-Telepaths, barring a few telepaths who are regularly put against the X-Telepaths in the battle boards. We aren’t making it a prime goal to do so, but if the telepath is someone of discussion on the battle boards, we might add them. You are right in that there are some telepaths missing, which means they will be under discussion when we bring them up in the tier list discussion, which is usually mid-year and end of year thing.

We have discussed a bit about a telekinetic tier list, but there are some telekinetics that we haven’t looked into yet. Plus, we sort of need to define the how we rate telekinetics, since telekinesis has a real world application, which means it is used differently compared to how we rate telepaths.

If you had to give a rough assessment on Hellion and Madelyne Pryor for their telekinetics how good do you think they are? Would they make the cut for what would pass a high tier ranking or not?

@psiviners319 Can I ask why is the placement very different for Mastermind and Mesmero? They two have upper feats against Phoenix Hosts and have feats against high tiers and both have not always been a telepath first and foremost but Mastermind is near the top of your mid tier list and mismero is at low tier. Mastermind is greater but the distance in placement is very far. May I know?

@marygcrisostomo: 1) That’s weird. We will see what we can do. See if this link works.

https://comicvine.gamespot.com/jean-grey/4005-3552/forums/updated-jean-grey-respect-thread-the-all-powerful--2134520/

2) No opinion on Hellion yet.

Madelyne seems to scale just below Jean Grey based on Inferno’s shielding from both X-Men and X-Factor while dueling Jean and Maddie going blow for blow with Jean in Dark Web. It’s made clear that Madelyne is not above Jean (due to cloning weirdness coming from Jean’s genetics), but she is close enough to make it a fight, even when Jean is pissed. We don’t have any tiers for the telekinetics yet, so that is the best answer I can give.

3) The difference between Mastermind and Mesmero would be moreso who they affected and a certain establishment of Mesmero’s power compared to a high tier.

Though both have affected both Phoenixes, Mesmero’s other showings are against Rachel Summers while she was going through issues with her powers after they powered-up. Yet, before the power-up, Rachel stomps him in a straight psychic fight. And it’s not close in the slightest and Rachel makes it clear how amateurish Mesmero is compared to her.

No Caption Provided

Contrast it with Mastermind who has stalemated Emma and went toe-to-toe with Xavier on Cerebro for a brief time and it’s pretty clear their is a tier difference between the two of them.

That's because of the amount of packets that the page has to load; you get that with abnormally large RT's. Load it up again and it should be fine.

@psiviners319 How do mental defenses and resistance interact with different forms of telepathics? For instance does Storm or Magneto resisting telepathic probes and kicking telepaths out of their minds translate to defenses against more direct telepathic attacks?
