Is silver age Hal Jordan racist?

I was reading an issue and he calls his best friend "pie face" which is a racist term for Asians and his friend just passed it off like a nickname. Now this could just be the writer being racist and liking that term.

Also I can't remember, was Pie Face was Asian or Inuit?

He helped the different coloured peoples of all planets except the "black coloured peoples of Earth", so yeah maybe he was a racist.

But then was anybody else taking on minority sidekicks at the time?

Never heard the term before but I read its a " 'a person with a round face and a blank expression" or at least that's what it says here.

There were a lot of racist and sexist things occuring in golden age comics. Its nothing new.

I think most of the Silver Age comics had elements of racism. In his comics with Green Arrow he actually fights against racism among other things.

Well considering Hal calling Tom a greased monkey and pie face (calling Tom pie face was existent in post-crisis until Geoff Johns undone that remark in his secret origins) and done things that questions him being a sexist, yes. But those are old comics anyways.

Nearly everyone was racist in the Silver Age.

Seeing that the time the comic was published I really wouldn't say he was racist. I mean that means every popular character in comics is either a racist or a sexist. The politically correct culture really wasn't a thing back then.

So yeah maybe he was and maybe he wasn't. I mean maybe he is just playfully messing with his friend. Haven't any of you ever messed with your friend with stuff that would be viewed as an offensive to an outsider?

grease monkey is a popular term for a mechanic or someone who is good with machines. there isn't anything questionable about that particular phrase. The rest is fair enough.

You're right. I haven't thought about that. But it wouldn't be a term that should be used in modern comics though.

@benk111: No he is not racist. Sure racism is a problem but there is another side of the story, people call everyone racist now for no good reason. Did he call every other asian pie face? No, so what is the problem, thats how he calls his friend and his frined is fine with it. If i call someone an idiot does it mean i automatically call everybody else idiots? No...
