How EXACTLY does Martian Manhunter's fire weakness work?

I've heard it's a mental thing and that only when he fears fire can it harm him.

I've heard only powerful types of fire such as Superman's heat vision can set it off.

I've heard he has to be exposed to some chemical which, when he sweats, is extremely flammable and will not be put out unless in a water tight suit.

I've heard he doesn't have a specific weakness to fire, he's as vulnerable as any other super hero.

I've heard any type of fire can light him up and burn him.

Can someone PLEASE clear this up?

How exactly does the weakness work, maybe show a scan.

Have you read the JLA new 52? They have MM origin story at the back of those issues.

The fire is what killed all the people on Mars, and MM feels guilty about not being able to save them. So it doesn't actually hurt him physically, but it does mentally.

@giantsfan576: It's psychological thing like a Phobia, It doesn't really affect him but because of his phobia he thinks it can kill him. He had gotten over it a couple of years before the reboot but he seems to no longer have that weakness in the New 52. Even when he got rid of his phobia he still disliked fire even though it didn't do anything to him. Hope this helps :)

re-new 52, it varied from writer to writer. in the new 52 its psychosomatic and cant physically harm him
