In the past couple of months i decided to try my hand at American comic books, and picked up on two series: Batman and The Amazing Spider Man.

http://ultimatebatmancomicswebsite.weebly.com/page-1.html

The link above is a timeline I found of the Batman series. What I was wondering is that all the comics in that timeline don't even come close to covering all the pre 52 comics. Are the issues/series that aren't in the timeline just meant to be read for fun? I guess this question applies to every other series too.
Sorry if it's a stupid question, I'm just a confused noob. Thanks!

@pheonix158: Continuity is....a mess. When it comes to the big two it's best to just kinda not worry about it and enjoy the story.
Also hypertime.

Short answer: yes. A lot of comics dont follow a characters timeline (or continuity) Sometimes these are just hypothetical stories, or just for fun as you said.

Sometimes they are explained by placing the story in an alternate universe. Both Marvel and DC have multiple universes, all which have their own Spider Mans and Batmans, respectively. Chances are you will run across this with any superhero comic.

Sound advice. If you get to cough up in continuity you'll just give yourself a migrane. It's best to just read and appreciate the comic.

Also, Welcome to Comic Vine! :)
