Oberyn Martell vs Inigo Montoya

Battle takes place on top the Cliffs of Insanity.

Round one: Morals apply, Inigo has his sword, Oberyn has a standard spear. Random encounter.

Round two: Morals off. Inigo has a sword made of valyrian steel. Oberyn has his manticore-poisoned spear. Both have full knowledge of each other.

They begin 5 meters apart.

What hand is Inigo using?

Oberyn has no real reason to play around in this fight. The only reason he lost to The Mountain was because he was trying to force a confession before he killed him. If it weren't for that, we saw that he easily would have killed The Mountain.

I don't really know anything about Inigo, but let's be clear that Oberyn could have one shotted Gregor if he'd wanted to.

I'd have to go with Oberyn on this one. His moves seemed much smoother, especially against an imposing figure like the Mountain.

1. Westeros and Princess Bride's world are not the same. The worst in one could be the best in the other for all we know. 2. Actually, he kind of is. He defeated The Mountain, the most feared fighter in Westeros.

Appealing to people's ignorance of Inigo, and trying to inform them about him is just ironic when you don't know about Oberyn. xP

@jaken7: I gathered from the comments that he took on Mountain, and it's also safe to assume that's his only real feat. And Princess Bride's world was the real world -- great fighters like Agrippa were referenced during the duel, meaning that there had already bee outstanding historical combatants in that timeline. In the book, it's stated that Inigo Montoya traveled the world studying with various masters until he had surpassed them all, growing past the rank of master into a truly undefeatable swordsman. The only reason Westley managed to beat him (again stated in the book) was because he was younger and slightly stronger. They were equal in skill.

It's not his only feat. The duel he won against Lord Edgar Yronwood was how he got the nickname, "Red Viper" in the first place.

That's great, and I never said who I thought would win, just that you don't know enough about Oberyn to make a fair judgement, and the worlds of GoT and Princess Bride aren't comparable enough to translate "best in the world" from one place to the other.

@joygirl: Oberyn travelled the world also, fighting with the Second Sons and forming his own Sellsword company. He is one of the greatest combatants alive in the books behind Barristan and Jaime, I'd put him on par with the Hound, he's definitely in the top 10 fighters in Westeros, not in history, but within book timeline. It's worth noting that Bronn feared the Mountain, and Bronn is said to be only slightly slower than Jaime himself and near as skilled, Tyrion thinks this, the guy who is massively biased for his brother. Catelyn is also amazed by Bronn's skill, she has seen many soldiers and knights over the years so that is quite a feat.

Yet Oberyn curbstomps the Mountain.

Is it ever confirmed that the Hound could have defeated his brother? I would think that if he could, he would have killed him.

Mountain was beaten at jousting by KoF who is at the very bottom of the badass chart.

Yeah, and Oberyn was thrown from his horse on two different occasions in jousts as well. Good thing this isn't a joust, or a horseback fight. :3
