East of West #2 Review
When is it too early to give a series critical acclaim? Now I am completely against people being fan boys of certain writers but come on after the work Jonathan Hickman has been doing on Avengers and now East of West how can you fault me?!
When I read the first issue I must admit I was a tad bit lost and I had to reread a couple of times but once I immersed myself within the book I got so excited. Just like the first issue I had to read and re-read for an analysis and boy was it worth it. Last issue we learned that something happened to the four horsemen a while ago that caused Conquest, Wrath and Famine to separate from death.
During the first issue it was rather unclear what could have caused this schism and what was really interesting was the fact that Conquest, Wrath and Famine were reborn while death remained an adult. These two sides are clearly at war and if I had to guess Death stopped the apocalypse from happening and the other three are back to rectify that. I would have never come to that conclusion if it wasn’t for the introduction of Death’s wife. What would four horsemen be doing with a wife?
Well I guess were just going to have to find out!
The Good
I can’t stress enough how interesting this story is for any reader. I feel like were on an epic journey that will only lead to an absolutely amazing story. Along the way were not only treated by Jonathan Hickman’s writing but also Nick Drogotta’s Art.
While reading the first issue I felt like Nick Drogotta’s art was a cut above from a lot of comic books out there and after seeing this issue I can completely confirm that. I especially loved the panels in which Conquest, Wrath and Famine are basically decimating the presidential succession until they find the right suitor. This creative team is making some comic book magic here and you would be silly to miss out.
Another thing I love about this issue was the fact that we got to see Death’s Native American companion take out a buffalo with his bare hands? What made this act even more amazing was the fact that it looks like he transformed into an animal to take the beast down.
The Bad
The only problem I had with this issue and the last one is the fact that Hickman is throwing too much to fast at the reader. I feel like I can’t really absorb the prophecy without reading it over and over again and I still don’t get some parts.
Once you get past that initial frustration the book is still pretty amazing.
Verdict
5 out of 5 – The Art and Writing are on another level and honestly we need more books like this in comic books!
