Pain & Pleasure
Flamebird finds herself in over heard and ends up flirting with death. Cameron Chase receives a lead that could spell trouble for Kate Kane.
My Thoughts:Batwoman is one of the most refreshing and invigorating series DC Comics is publishing for many reasons. The intricate, incredible artwork it delivers is usually one of the first qualities noted about the series. Aside from that, it takes risks other comics usually don't, such as the fact it stars a lesbian superhero. I'm not saying you should read it because of that. I'm saying you should read it because it's an all around well put together piece of art.
If you've been keeping up with this series, you know the brash, hard-headed Flamebird recently had a falling-out with her cousin Kate which lead to her putting on her old Flamebird costume and hitting the streets of Gotham. The issue opens with J.H. Williams III displaying the contrast of pain and pleasure. The art was unlike anything I've seen before as black and white pictures of Kate and Maggie's "alone time" were juxtaposed with dazzling fiery layouts of Flamebird's fight for her life and near death experience. The most pivotal moment came later in the issue when Agent Cameron Chase finds out there is a connection between Flamebird and Kate Kane. The issue ends as Mr. Bones arrives in Gotham greeted by Cameron Chase. From start to finish this issue draws you in and never lets you go.
As I've already went into a little detail above about the art, if you're still wondering, it was amazing. J.H. Williams III has a knack for designing some of the most complex and phenomenal layouts in comics. His work looks even better when topped off by Dave Stewarts colors. The two make one of the most dynamic art combinations in all of comics. Another of my favorite layout designs this issue was the one where Batwoman entered an apartment through the window. Her cape was sprawled out across both pages with uniquely designed panels inside of her cape. It was simply unbelievable.
Batwoman is a series everyone should be reading. Things in Kate Kane's world are about to being shaken up. You really don't want to miss out on one of the best series DC is currently publishing.
