The Reason For Wonder Woman's New Costume

Wonder Woman has changed her look and there's a reason for it.

Wonder Woman debuted as a character back in 1941 in ALL-STAR COMICS #8. Over the years, she has had some minor changes made to her costume but it's always stayed pretty much the same. She has gone from a skirt to no skirt to even pants for a bit (but we won't get into that).

In the New 52, her costume design had a familiar look to it with some minor adjustments. Below you can see Jim Lee's take on her along with Jason Fabok's recent version, both from the pages of JUSTICE LEAGUE.

No Caption Provided

When the cover to WONDER WOMAN #41, by David Finch, was first revealed, we saw she would be getting a new costume that was more of a departure from what we were used to. It has more of an armor-feel to it. We have seen Diana wear the occasional Amazonian battle armor but this appears to be a little more practical for her day to day missions.

The big questions is, why is she now suddenly changing her outfit?

It turns out it's more of a personal reason. There isn't a huge calamity that is making her suit up as she prepares to embark on a major battle. While her costume as always been a symbol of sorts, to her it represents the time when she was younger and left Themyscira for "Man's world."

No Caption Provided

Wonder Woman has been through a lot in the New 52. She's been through some changes. For her, changing her costume is like shedding her old skin. A new one represents the changes she's gone through and who she is now. It is to represent her roles as a god, a queen, and a superhero.

No Caption Provided

So what's the take on it? We've long debated about the practicality of her original costume. It is "classic" but it's hard to get over the idea of Diana basically wearing a bathing suit with boots.

No Caption Provided

Fabok's design was great in giving it a more practical look while still retaining some of the classic feel. This new outfit does give her more of a warrior look mixed with making her look a little regal. At the same time, it also looks like she feels she needs to cover up more to protect herself, which we know isn't the case.

There's also the spikes that come out of her wrist gauntlets. What will she use those for?

As seen in this issue, despite being the God of War, Diana sometimes chooses to try to talk things out rather than go straight for the fight. Those spikes could easily impale someone. They could also serve the purpose of blocking or shielding herself from attacks against weapons. She could probably also use them to open letters and packages.

The boots seem like a bit much. As a guy, I can't really speak on the practicality of wearing thigh-high boots. Maybe there's nothing wrong or different. Depending on the material, to me it seems it could get in the way of her agility or being able to fully bend her knees. I'm sure the weight of the gauntlets and shoulder pads also won't throw off her balance and we'll still see her fully capable of diving into a battle without being hampered.

It's just a little hard to imagine her moving so agile as we've recently seen in the pages of JUSTICE LEAGUE #39.

No Caption Provided

Obviously we'll have to wait to see her fully in action in the new outfit. In WONDER WOMAN #41 and SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN #18, she didn't get a chance to cut loose just yet.

What are your thoughts on the change? Can you let go of the "classic" look and embrace the change? Has it already grown on you?

Let us know what you think.

Think she looks good. Sure I'd drop the boots to knee height and get rid of those white stars from the costume. But overall it's a nice change.

I can't say how I really feel about. On one hand I love the classic, on the other hand new armor looks cool ( well maybe the boots are a bit overkill ). I have a little bit of a problem with the ''reasoning'' though. Whole 'leaving the girl behind' stuff feels too much like self-justification for the writers.

I don't think it's a love it or hate it situation. They've been trying to cover her up for years now, and they think it's the perfect time in our society to do so. Right now it will not cause a large public backlash. It's not for the comic book sales, those have always been in the red. It's all for the ww movie, TV, cartoons, merchandice, etc. That's a concept I can get behind.

Since continuity seems to be nearly out the window these days, what are the chances Fabok actually draws her in this costume in Justice League?

I mean, I really like it. They finally got the GOLD trims back instead of the stupid silver. If would be perfect if the black were blue but I'm not complaining. Diana doesn't need to show skin to be kick ass. We all know its going to go back eventually, lets just let the Finchs think this new look is what really makes her Wonder Womaninstead of Wonder Girl.

And guess what? Neither are most of the comic book females that have gotten hit with the politically-correct stick. Plus, you just overlooked the fact on how WW's criticism is full of double standards.

It's an utter train wreck of a costume re-design, turning her into a joke. Manga Woman anybody???? William Moulton Marston must be turning in his grave over this LATEST abomination. If DC are really so desperate to create a new "Warrior Woman" character then create one - don't be so god damn lazy and butcher an iconic character that has stood the test of time for almost 75 years with THE most instantly recognisable costume in the world - in order to ride on the coat-tails of her world wide recognised "brand name" to do the job for you.
And anyone who thinks this won't hurt sales needs their head's tested....

@azza04: While I also think that Faboks design is the best, it was never the official new look for the character. She only sported that costume in recent issues of Justice League, and nowhere else. In all other comics she appeared in she had her normal New 52 costume.

If you think that because it doesn't show any skin... why did the Spartans in 300 works so well when all they had was a loin-cloth, cape and a helmet?

Aside that, this wouldn't work on screen if the tone is meant to be serious, it's just too garish.

I don't mind the new armor but I would have preferred if they had given a more ancient greek feel. I also think they're too stuck on the red and blue at DC in general. Having her and Supes with the same color scheme is bleh.

Actually it was Meredith's idea, she didn't like the bathing suit and thought Wonder Woman should wear something more suited to battle.

I don't hate it but Wonder Woman looks like a model from Project Runway where the challenge was to design an outfit from a circus tent. I prefer Fabok's design by a country mile.

Fabok's design is the best redesigned costume DC has done in ages. It stays true to the original, seems more practical, and adds more greco-roman flare to WW. I don't see a reason DC just can't start using that is her design permanently.

Why do people think there is something wrong with showing skin? I mean come on, this is getting ridiculous. She looks so constricted here like she's in the arctic. Her older new 52 designs gave her a lot more freedom while she still looked like a warrior.

I personally prefer Jason Fabok's design. It's updated and better suits Diana. The new suit? Seems constricting and less suitable for battle unlike Fabok's design.

Costume changes are always a easy way to generate buzz for a character. Personally, I have always liked Wonder Woman in long pants or a skirt that goes to her knees (seems more practical when fighting). While I don't like the boots going to the mid-point of her thighs, I do like that they don't have a heel.

@brunnhilde Of course, i believe everything anyone says as well. Nobody who reads WW, reads it because they wanna look at her in her "bathing suit", and actually they put Hulk in an armor that covered his entire body and people objected, not because it covers his hard to resist muscles but because it's pointless.

the reasoning is fine but unnecessary because WW fans want the new52 continuity and changes to the mythos to be scrapped making her reasoning moot.

regardless, the costume needs work still though. some elements are great. others are not.

As a SJW, I actually dislike the costume. In my opinion it shows a misunderstanding of what Wonder Woman represents to feminists and what feminism is, and it borders of slut shaming.

You see, contrary to popular belief, Feminists have no problem with sex and nudity; it's the way you portray them. Wonder Woman's bathing suit is fine if she's drawn in strong poses rather than sexualized ones. This one, I dunno it's busy and weird.

As a comic book fan, I prefer the classic costume

I guess I can understand the reasoning on it, but even I think that there's a bit too much going on in the costume.

And maybe I can get into it more as time goes on but I doubt I'll give the Finch's run a try. The art doesn't excite or interest me enough and from what I've read it's a little dull.

Somehow they went with this when the true reason for the change was the pressure DC was getting from the activist groups who saw Wonder Woman as a symbol of sexism. So in reality the change was made to please a group of people who do not even read comics. Now, that being said I can't say the changed they made were necessarily bad. The look is sleek, not sure it's honestly needed but, I'm not really opposed to it one way or the other.
