'The Dark Knight Rises': What's in Store?

What can we expect to see in Christopher Nolan's upcoming film,'The Dark Knight Rises'?

No Caption Provided
Of all of the rumors that have been circling Christopher Nolan's upcoming film, The Dark Knight Rises, one thing remains consistent: this will be his last Batman movie. In an interview with MTV back in February, Nolan indicated pretty clearly that 'The Dark Knight Rises' will be the end of the trilogy. "We're very much excited about really finishing a trilogy and giving a conclusion to our story. And that's what we're doing." While brief, these few words are incredibly telling; they reinforce that beyond the surface of all the action and adventure, Nolan's Batman films are tied together seamlessly by a single theme and that The Dark Knight Rises will close the chapter on it.

 == TEASER ==

Ra's al Ghul
Ra's al Ghul
If this is to be the finale to his Batman movies, why call it 'The Dark Knight Rises'? Using the word "rise" is indicative of the beginning of something —and essentially, it should. If I had to guess, The Dark Knight Rises will act as a culmination of the lessons learned in both previous Nolan Batman films by Bruce Wayne- and that it is in this film that Batman will finally rise as a vigilante hero and come into his own.

The story of Nolan's Batman is gradual. Batman was born in Batman Begins; the first film. Haunted by the violent murder of his parents, Bruce Wayne finds redemption and validation in serving justice through vigilantism, dressing as Batman and eliminating corruption and mob control (by the Falcone family) in Gotham after enduring years of training in ninjutsu by Ra's al Ghul. It is in this film that Batman/Bruce Wayne's ideals are challenged by Ra's al Ghul, who's draconian ideology and desire to destroy the world to perfect it creates a rift between the two characters.

In the second Batman film, The Dark Knight, we once more witness Bruce's struggle —however this time it is predominantly internal. The second Batman film served to challenge Bruce as Batman as well as his idea of heroism. This concept was particularly prevalent in the interactions between Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent. Bruce wants what Harvey has, and in a way sees him (at least at one point) as a symbol of true heroism. The difference between Bruce and Harvey is that Harvey does not have to hide who he is. Harvey can step out as himself, a hero, in the light while Bruce must remain in the shadows. Harvey is recognized as a symbol of heroism, and to a certain extent (at least until the end of the film), Bruce resents him for that. This film is as much about Bruce's inner conflict as it is about the idea that the existence of Batman is not necessarily a good thing. In an interview with the New York Times in 2008, following the production and release of The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan cited that an underlying theme in his Batman films is the idea that the existence of Batman is what brings about the lunatics of Gotham

As we looked through the comics, there was this fascinating idea that Batman’s presence in Gotham actually attracts criminals to Gotham, attracts lunacy. When you’re dealing with questionable notions like people taking the law into their own hands, you have to really ask, where does that lead? That’s what makes the character so dark, because he expresses a vengeful desire.

The idea that Gotham's lunatics exist because Batman exists is something that has long been reinforced in the comics; and one that was first introduced in Frank Miller's Batman: Year One —a book that heavily influenced the script for Batman Begins. By the end of the film, Bruce takes the blame for Two-Face's crimes in order to protect Harvey Dent's name —a symbol of martyrdom and heroism. In this scene, Bruce accepts that Batman must remain in the dark and that he does not fall into the mold of what society considers to be a true hero. This idea is fully realized in the last scene of the film where Commissioner Gordon watches Batman run from police and he says, "Because he's [Batman] the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So, we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight. ."

So, what will The Dark Knight Rises bring?  While it is difficult to speculate what lessons Bruce Wayne/Batman will learn in the final installment of Nolan's series, we can still guess at what the relationships between the new characters Nolan plans to introduce will be. If you ask me, the best way to complete the film is to go back to the very beginning- Ra's al Ghul and the League of Shadows- a casting that had been recently confirmed. The possibility of the inclusion of Talia al Ghul, Ra's daughter (actress Marion Cotillard) would bridge the connection between Batman, his past, and Ra's al Ghul. While the casting confirmation speculates that actor Josh Pence will play a young Ra's al Ghul; whose to say that Nolan won't integrate Ra's use of the Lazarus Pit's in his next film?

Additionally, the reveal of Catwoman (being played by actress Anne Hathaway) in the upcoming movie may be linked to the Falcone family, much like she was in The Long Halloween, a series Nolan previously used as a reference for Batman Begins. In the Knightfall series, Bane (who will be played by Tom Hardy) looked to Catwoman for help, so there may be a connection there. Reinforcing a struggle over the control of Gotham City between the Falcone family and the "lunatics" that now exist in Gotham because of Batman would bridge the series together.

In the past, Christopher Nolan has indicated how difficult it is to duplicate the success of a film (The Dark Knight is one of the top ten highest grossing films of all time), but that he would not make a movie for the sake of making a movie. "I wouldn't want to do one if it weren't going to be as good as the first or second. That's not respectful to the fans," he told the USA Today in an interview. One thing is for sure, whatever happens in the upcoming film, Christopher Nolan has his fans in mind.

What would you like to see in 'The Dark Knight Rises'? What did you love about the last two Batman films, and how do you want to see Nolan bridge the trilogy together?

UPDATE

Earlier today, Warner Brothers confirmed that both Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon Levitt have been cast in the upcoming film Dark Knight Rises. Cotillard will portray Miranda Tate, and Levitt has been cast as John Blake. You can check out the write up for details on the casing here. So there goes my theory of Marion Cotillard's possible portrayal of Talia al Ghul...or is it? Will these two actors really be portraying these characters, or is the studio simply protecting their script? What do you think?

If they were to play on the Batman attracts psycho-villains angle, then there might be room for some of the more 'super-powered' or 'mutated' villains like Poison Ivy or Killer Croc.  But I guess that might be what they have in store for Bane.

However, I wouldn't want the Schumacher style of having multiple villains.  They handled it nicely with Dark Knight, but only because the Joker & Two-Face weren't over-the-top powered villains.  They were hideous scarred but still believable.

Perhaps just hint at other characters.  In the same way that the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man film mentioned Doc Conners, without dwelling on him as a villain.  Or the mention of the homeless disappearing, which the police department don't care about... and Batman catches Croc early on (much in the same way there was a minor Scarecrow scene at the start of Dark Knight?)

Either way, I've been happy with the semi-realistic way that the films have portrayed characters... so I trust they'll keep it golden in the 3rd act :)

This is by far my most anticipated movie in the next few years. It's sad to know that this will be Nolan's last Batman, but at the same time, I'm extremely excited to see how he ties it up. The Dark Knight ended with Batman being hunted by the GCPD, so it will be interesting to see how Batman operates with Commissioner Gordon and what Batman's status in Gotham will be at the end of this final movie.

I like how in the first two movies, the villains were clearly portrayed to represent a darker aspect of Bruce's personality that has been locked away. With Bane, it seems like we'll get to see Bruce pushed to his physical limits (sort of a wrap-up of his training in Batman Begins). You have to wonder if we'll see Bane break the Bat...

Enough speculating of what will happen, who will do what, etc. I think we all should trust Nolan at this point to just do it. I do.

I'm going to make a huge effort to not even see the trailer before hand and just walk inside the theatre. My ass was in that seat since begins ended.

What we really should be worried about is the already planned reboot!.......

I REALLY hope this movie is awesome. TDK was such a commercial and critical hit that the stakes are supremely high.

I think Chris Nolan will pull it off, though. His movies are banana nut good!

One of the themes in The Dark Knight is that the people of Gotham blame Batman on everything because it is convenient if not for him then The League would have been uninterrupted and destroyed Gotham.

The perception Batman has on the people of Gotham is a very important theme in the first movie he appears and becomes something to fear and in that fear the people of Gotham blame him for events in The Dark Knight whether he was the cause or the result of Gotham's troubles is up for debate and just a unending cycle. I would not be surprised if in Rises he becomes something more to the people of Gotham that name The Dark Knight Rises is there for a reason.

All this talk of Bane and the possibility of him breaking Batman's back as me curious. This really makes me wonder what Catwoman's role will be and what JGL is going to be doing. Although I really do wish, Dick Grayson was in the movie. So we could see the boywonder come to the aide of Batman- Batman is great, but the dynamic that Robin brings to the stories should help elevate it. But I don't want his inclusion if it just means marketing, I want his presence to count and to matter to the story as a whole.

I think the first two movies came from different inspirations.  The first was sort of like a Bourne inspired Batman, the second was crime epic inspired (Heat!)  I think Nolan will keep on that snd use some other great movie for a bit of motivation, which I think will work (as long as its not Inception)

It sure does boggle the mind about what we might expect.  I don't know, personally I see a possible lasting romance lay ahead for Bruce with either Selina, or possibly Talia as well.  With all the predictions being made though I've come to the conclusion that I'll just expect the unexpected and love what Nolan puts out there.  He didn't disappoint me in 2005 and certainly didn't in 2008. Lets hope the same could be said for 2012.

The end will probs just be Batman being clear of the charges he gets in dark knight and him having beaten Bane and the league back out of Gotham. So he cna watch over it as its protector without fear of the locla police coming afetr him.

Sorry, but this uhhh... is not correct at all:

"He's a single guardian, a watchful protector. The Dark Knight."

The actual line in the film is, "He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A Dark Knight."

"(both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are two of the top ten highest grossing films of all time)"

Batman Begins only made 200 million domestic, 372 million worldwide. It is certainly not one of the top ten highest grossing films of all time.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Bane crippled Bruce, and someone else (Valley) hopefully picked up the mantle, and it ended on that note.

Nolan could also take a page out of B: TAS and play Bane off as a world-class assassin and have him used either by Talia or, since we still don't know the role of Joseph Gordon-Levitt officially but the odds-on favorite rumor is he'll be Falcone's son, a hired gun by Alberto.

My favorite epsisode within the Batman Animated series was when we would see Commisioner Gordon successfully hunt down Batman in a desperate fit of rage.

Villains are nice for movies, but the Batman concept has found itself developing rules of it's own to where it isn't only relied upon the involvement from villains, it's also relied on Gotham City itself.

I wouldn't be that excited to see a demanding cast of Bat-villains, instead I would love to see writing and directing at it's best to where it introduce's Batman to a whole new and unique threat that isn't mainly coming from a Bat-villain, but from Gotham City itself.

Introducing movie veiwers something different than another hero-beating-up-villain-save's-the-day would really capture alot of attention and credit, possibly attracting more people into comics which would be very awesome for the Batman franchise.

You bring up an interesting point Babs. Two out of the three film titles have a beginning or developing idea or concept: Batman Begins, The Dark Knight Rises. It sounds like there should be some kind of James Bond style series of movies - which I think was a statement about how they wanted to approach this idea  for Batman before the first movie came out.

Although Christian Bale has stated this is his last movie in the series, could we maybe see a passing of the mantle to a different actor? Sort of how Roger Moore took over Sean Connery's run in the Bond movies? I would hate to have what happened to Burton's movies happen here, but its also a possibility - if they get that cheesy, I'm not going to be able to continue to watch them.

Bale said he will continue to be Batman as long as Nolan is making the movies. Since Nolan's run on Batman will be complete after this film, WB would need a new director, and a new vision for the franchise. To me, it is less about Bale as Batman, and more about Nolan's idea for the franchise that is of principle importance. Christian Bale is replaceable, but Chris Nolan's vision is less so. In order to continue making these films there needs to be a uniform vision for who Batman is. Look at the Burton, Shoemaker and Nolan Batman films collectively- they all have different ways of interpreting 'The Dark Knight.' I think a new director wanting to come in and make 'Batman 4,' a continuation of the current franchise would probably have a tough time making it mesh with Nolan's trilogy.

If they want to continue making Batman films I think they would have to reboot the franchise after 'The Dark Knight Rises.'

I'm not that exicited about the next Batman's movie. While I enjoyed Batman Begins a lot, I consider it the best movie version of Batman (even if I loathe the choice of the female protagonist).
The Dark Knight was a lot less exciting to me, why? That's difficult to say, probebly it was because the film felt too long and I think that Two-Face was undersold here. The main gimmick of Harvey (aside from the coin) is that he was Bruce's and Batman's friend before going down the Dark side path. This is what makes Two-Face a great addition to the rogue gallery, he's a common psycho, he's a friend, a personal failure of both Batman (who wasn't able to save him) and Bruce (who wasn't able to help him in the aftermath). Unfortunalty Nolan's movie shrunk the Bruce angle a lot making him a lot less significant as a villain.

So one strike and one foul, I hope that the next movie will work and bring the whole story to the epic conclusion it deserves.

By the way I simply love the final speech of Gordon in Dark Knight.

@Babs: Exactly. I can see how Nolan would be MUCH more important. The vision that Joel Schumacher envisioned deviated from Burton's films with stark, jaw-dropping day-glow colors and overly-sculpted body armor when he took over that franchise. The last two films looked like he was channeling Frederico Fellini with his imagery.

I also have to agree with those who say that this  most recent incarnation of Batman would have a difficult time fitting into the DC Universe since it has such a grounded and gritty treatment of the characters. Many of Batman's foes would look ridiculous or unrealistic in Nolan's setting and it has no room for Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, and a host of other characters in it's realism.
As much as I hate to think there might be another reboot, it seems almost likely and necessary to bring a more fantastic/mythological edge into the world of Gotham so as to allow for the possibility of a JLA or JLU movie. As it stands right now, syncing up the rest of the JLA would be difficult at best.

Talia,  Alberto Falcone, and Bane. I think they'll be the bad guys in the film.

Taila will come to Gotham as the League of Shadows leader; try to destroy it, but falls in love with Bruce Wayne.

Alberto Falcone is probably trying to rebuild his father's crime empire, and killing off the Batman would be a obvious step in doing so.

I bet Bane will be in the League of Shadows and he will be what Bruce Wayne should have become when he was training in Batman: Begins.  He'll be able to kill criminals, and do what he is commanded by Talia without questioning it. I think he will have a secret agenda, and want to kill Batman, Falcone, and Talia so that he could build his own criminal empire.

Catwoman......no idea how she could fit in this. Probably as a ally of Batman.

Bane and the return of Ra's Al Ghul seem to work so far, but Alberto Falcone and Selina Kyle can only work if the former is in a short sub-plot (like Scarecrow in Dark Knight), and the latter dosen't take on the identity of Catwoman.

Flashbacks would be fine, because he could use some unused footage from Joker, if he wants to. Still a lot of guessing, Ra's Al ghul's supposedly played by this young fella, rumours about his daughter, sound like a lot of bullshit to me and not a lot of info.

Be kinda cool to see Liam Neeson make another appearance at the very end of the film..but then that would mean the Lazarus Pits would have to be involved and that just depends if nolan wants to stretch things...he likes making things seem very believable..

as for Bane i don't see him being a huge character in this movie..maybe an awesome fight scene..and if anything i see him working for the League....maybe just replace the character Max Cort in the Prey mini series......i predict that they are just gonna him be a big buy that can fight and think..i don't think he would even have the venom to make him huge like we've seen before....if anyone has seen the Young Justice episode with bane i see him kinda like that just no venom..no tubes............if that route was taken with using the venom then i would ask if he would somehow be connected to Dr Hugo Strange.....

I heard rumors while ago about the use of Dr. Hugo Strange in this movie..I think that would be a great idea...he was in the first issue of batman along with joker and catwoman....i would hope that they would keep him more around Jim Gordon tho.... like if Dr. Strange was working for the GCPD to help figure out who Batman is...kinda like in Prey

As for Catwoman...i was kinda expecting it and im looking forward to it...just please take more of just a jewel heist catwoman...not a pushed out of window by christopher walken catwoman.....not that michelle pfeiffer didnt do bad i just dont like that origin story...but yea i think it will be good....i c that Holly Robinson is in the script as well...so i wonder how she will be involved with catwoman.....the story i would kinda like to see would be is if Black Mask was in the movie and maybe killed Holly....leaving Selina with the choice of being a hero (if she somehow helps batman in the movie) or shooting Black Mask in the head (ref Catwoman #52) and choosing to be a villian....

so yea Black Mask would be neat....Joseph Gordon still doesnt have a role or at least not announced so who know but Nolan and the crew.....

Talia
Ra's
Bane
Catwoman
Hugo Strange
Black Mask
and maybe a few small appearances kinda like Zsasz

Yo Babs,

I think we'd all like to see  the Lazarus Pit, but like Robin and anything else sci-fi or supernatural (and the fact that they'll already be 2 1/2 villains already), it's more likely they'll keep Ra's in the flashbacks.

When you think Bane and Alberto Falcone, you really think "mind-fuckers."  But didn't Joker mess with Batman's mind, and soul, more than anyone?  It's not going to be long enough for the KnightsEnd storyline (many of us were disappointed when Bane "almost" broke the Bat in the Animated series.  But whether Falcone, Bane and Catwoman work together or not, they'll definitely play a role as intellectual adversaries apart from being vicious and cunning.

Then there's Batman's new reputation as a wanted fugitive.  How will a Bane/Talia duo exploit that, will Falcone be a pawn like all the villains in KnightsEnd, and will Catwoman find it in her interest to help Batman at the end after being drawn to his pointy ears.

So much is possible when alluding to A Long Halloween or KnightsEnd, but ultimately I think only Nolan knows what the outcome will be.  And when he starts talking about how mindful he is about how many good third sequels there are, then you know he's cooking up something tasty in the kitchen.

P.S. I hope my third paragraph isn't the plot.  It's TOO predictable.

I hope they really only use Bane as muscle, and not a villain with a plan, because he's really not much more than that. They could go for a drug trafficking angle i guess.

I also hope Catwoman gets to be on both sides of the law, and that she's a vigilante thief like she is in the comics. I want her to both fight and help Batman.

I'm not sure how i feel about re-using Ras al Ghul. Using the lazarus pit would be cool but it would feel out of place in the Nolanverse. But i'd like to see Talia as long as she fights Catwoman and loses haha.

Dark Knight is one of my favorite movie, and i'm afraid that they might ruin this third movie, but i'm sure i'll like it no matter what. Regarding life lessons, i think this one will be about Batman redeeming himself in the eyes of Gotham.

(also i hope they move from the WayneTech Basement to the Batcave!)

I suspect that the Cat Woman story-line is going to take center stage with Bane as a minor character. Bane will probably have some connection to Ra's Al Ghul (perhaps, like Batman, Bane was trained by Ra's, but unlike Batman, he chose a path of destruction) and will eventually "Break The Bat", just as Cat Woman falls into certain peril, forcing Batman to overcome his physical impairment and save the day. Also, they will likely refer to Cat Woman's origins with the Falcone Crime family - which would partially explain Levitt as Holiday. Personally I think that the Holiday story can go in one of two directions: either the Falcone family is trying to seek vengeance upon Two-Face for killing Carmine Falcone in The Dark Knight, with Alberto as the new head of the Family (which I doubt only because the last film was about the fall of the mafia and the rise of costumed villains, so including the mob might make the film redundant). Or Alberto will try to become a costumed villain himself and get into hot water.

Anyways, I'm really looking forward to what they might do with this story!
