Off YOUR Mind: What Should Happen to the Daredevil Movie Franchise?

We all have opinions, here's your chance to share your thoughts.

Once upon a time, Fox put out a Daredevil movie starring Ben Affleck and others. It wasn't too well received. When Disney bought Marvel, this eventually lead to the creation of Marvel Studios and the ability to tell comic book movies with a cohesive 'cinematic universe.' The rights to Daredevil remained at Fox (along with Fantastic Four) as long as they continued to make movies within a specified time period.

Now it appears the time for Daredevil is about to expire and the rights could revert back to Marvel/Disney. It's possible Fox could still fast track the movie but they have to get started by October. Normally we would say the rights reverting back is a great thing but recently word got out that director Joe Carnahan's pitch for a 70s crime drama take on Daredevil has been shot down. He even released his 'sizzle reel' used to convince Fox execs he was onto something (you can check it out here).

No Caption Provided

The question is, what do you think would be best for a Daredevil movie franchise? Do you think a 70s take separate from other heroes could have worked? Should the possibility of Daredevil meeting up with the Avengers be put in place (even though he rarely has anything to do with the team in the comics since he 'joined')? Should the movie be based on an existing arc by Frank Miller, Brian Bendis or even Mark Waid?

This is your chance to stand up and let your opinion be heard. Let us know below what you feel would be best for the future of Daredevil on the big screen.

The Daredevil movie was awesome! I don't care what anyone says. If you haven't read Frank Miller's run on Daredevil then you can't say the movie sucked. Yeah they changed a few things in the movie but it worked out in my opinion.

There actually does already exist a 'Marvel Knights' film imprint. The logo was used for that last Punisher flick, and Ghost Rider 2.

Punisher film rights reverted back to Marvel a while ago... so now Daredevil. But Sony still has Ghost Rider locked up. Until Marvel can wrangle back ALL the characters, I don't think you're going to be seeing a Wolverine/Punisher/Ghost Rider/Daredevil crossover anytime soon... which is truly unfortunate.

But, whatever 'Marvel Knight' characters they do happen to have the rights to, I say they need to create a dark, 'anti-Avengers' rated R universe.

And I can't praise Blade 1 enough as a Rated R Marvel comic film that works. Heck, BRING BACK BLADE, Wesley Snipes and all. Why not?

Personally, I would get more of a kick out of it if they dropped 'Marvel Knights' and called it 'Marvel Max' instead.

I don't care who makes the movie or show, but I do wish they would stop sitting on the rights and doing nothing with them.

The 1970's setting is great but they'll have to make it as an another universe with characters and organizations involved like spiderman should he appear in DD film, The Hand, Hydra, SHIELD, the technology etc. BUt if it's just DD, Kingpin and The Hand alone then that fine.

The Director's Cut of Daredevil wasn't that bad guys. Marvel stated that if the rights to Daredevil were to revert back to them that they would reboot it and make it better and so far Marvel has been doing an excellent job on there movies in the pass couple of years. Fox is not doing anything with him so the rights should go back to Marvel.

Even if (and probably when) Marvel gets the rights back, they should keep it in a separate universe entirely from The Avengers. My favorite versions of DD have always been Miller's, Bendis', and Brubaker's and thematically, they just don't go together and I just don't see the point in giving little head nods to other movies if they somehow don't follow up on them. Honestly, I think they would just come off as needless clutter and I'd find them annoying more than anything else.

If they did create a separate Marvel Knights-like universe, I'd be okay with the little head nods there, though (and yes, I realize I'm contradicting myself, here, so sue me), but for the most part, I think these heroes are strong enough as characters that they don't need to be featured in movies with other heroes just for the heck of it (The Avengers being the obvious exception since that is based on, well, The Avengers comic book. Power Man & Iron Fist being another obvious exception). And was the Marvel Knights comic book that big of a hit that it would even warrant a movie to bring them all together like that? I say DD can handle both The Kingpin and The Hand all by himself in a movie. Hell, he's done so in the comic books for years, now.

I think I've mentioned this before, but get the guy who directed Drive to direct. That guy has moody, film noir/crime flicks down pat. Involve The Kingpin, The Hand, Bullseye, Elektra, and maybe even Typhoid Mary, but not all for the same movie, obviously, otherwise it would just be ridiculously busy. Maybe first an origin story centered around Miller's Man Without Fear mini, then follow up with The Elektra Saga, followed up with Born Again. If The Hand and Elektra are present, you definitely need Stick, IMHO. One thing that really bugged me about the first DD flick is that there was absolutely no explanation of his fighting skills; they just seemed to suddenly appear out of no where as a part of his powers or something. Since Dennis Hopper has passed (he would've been a perfect Stick, IMHO), cast Harvey Keitel in the role.

They should make a movie based off of the Frank Miller "Man Without Fear" five issue story arc. that to me is one of the best versions of his origin story. then after that they can do what they like but that story would get their foot in the door and make people forget about the Affleck atrocity.

I think they need to step back and look at Daredevil's long history. I mean you can adapt a set origin story for a low budget movie a wonderful movie. Like say if they where to take Frank Miller's Man Without Fear pick up the trade and there you go, script done. Then they don't even have to show him in the costume, seeing as how Hollywood has some sort of vendetta against those, until the very end of the movie. Instead you get maybe an hour and a half if done correctly of none stop bad-assery and a great story about his training and reaching deep into his powers.

You'll need a cast so off the top of my head:

Bruce Willis: Jack Murdock

Andrew McCarthy : The Fixer

Mickey Rourke: Stick (Though I did like Terence Stamp more)

Josh Peck or Jonah Hill: Foggy

Michelle Ryan : Elektra

: Young Matt

: Mickey

: Kingpin

: Matt Murdock

(I can't think of the rest)

I liked the other movie to an extent. That is that Ben Affleck played him quite well, the rest of the cast on the other hand were mostly poor. It should be dark, not lighthearted like Spider-Man. NO famous actors that's the most idiotic thing they do these days. Unknown actor/superheroes are clearly the way forward.

What it seems to be is that Fox does not seem to care about: Daredevil. Back in 2011 there were talks of a reboot, but nothing has really been said since. The original did not receive as bad of reviews as many let on. It was given mediocre instead of low ratings, and it made a $100 Million dollar profit. The thing about Fox is that if they just would they could give us much darker and gritty stories, which is what Daredevil is all about, if only Fox just would. They aren't going to make any profits though if they keep shooting ideas down.

There are plenty of directors in fox that could do a decent job with a Daredevil movie if only they would let them. Since they aren't going to it looks like the rights to Daredevil will return to Marvel/Disney and the likelihood of seeing a Daredevil movie that actually feels like Daredevil will probably be impossible.

If Daredevil became a TV series... it would become a pale view of his character.

Did anyone see what they did to him and Thor in those Hulk made for TV movies?!?

Frank Miller style... no ninjas... no Electra... no black Kingpins!!!

In fact... no Kingpins at all!

Done to death!

If they ever do make a reboot/Series for Daredevil they better aleast mention Elektra, Elektra is as Important to Daredevil as She hulk is to hulk or Mary jane is to Spiderman, she is apart of his history not to mention his first big love/tragedy. if you want to go with the Ultimate timeline she was their during his college years and fast forward to the current time she was also one of the heroes who helped him defeat the beast in Shadowland. My point is that they should at least mention her somehow someway if we do wind up getting series/reboot not saying she should be a main focus or anything but at a scene/episode dedicated to her would be nice.

In my mind, Daredevil is the quintessential example of an average man in an extraordinary world. Frank Miller recognized this in the 80's; I remember him saying something like, "[Vigilantism] isn't something a normal guy would do, so you need to create someone whose passions run so deep they're willing to make drastic decisions for what they believe in." Murdock adopted his Daredevil persona out of outrage of the criminals that can slip through the loopholes of the law, and it manifested out of admiration of bigger heroes like Spider-Man or the Fantastic Four. He's a man who believes in justice yet also has a big dose of morality in what he's doing, an incredibly complex character and my all-time favorite superhero.

A story that could blend in this complexity as well as making an exciting legal/crime drama hybrid would be great. There must have been some confusion with the last film, and while I did like some aspects of it, it was just another action movie. I felt the same issue with Guy Richie's Sherlock Holmes movies. It looked like Carnahan had that idea, but I don't a similar project is thrown out the window just because the rights are soon to be included in Marvel's stellar yet black-and-white Cinematic Universe. Just have mention of the Avengers in the background so the costume thing doesn't seem so absurd (Speaking of which, ditch the red leather getup), and distribute the film under Disney's mature label Touchstone Pictures. Ideally, I would love that upcoming Marvel-related TV project for Joss Whedon would be for the Man Without Fear. So far they've been able to get down the pathos to all these Marvel characters; now let's do that and at the same time build more than a "good guy fights bad guy" story within.

By the way, Ryan Gosling is long overdue for some sortof superhero role; he could be stellar as Matt Murdock.

The sizzle reel was really cool but I can't see a DD film working in a 70's setting. I'd like to see the rights revert back to Marvel as it just seems right. DD wouldn't fit right with the Avengers already established in the MCU but I agree with the many people who have said that he should exist alongside them with the occasional nod. A one off decent DD remake would suffice I think, put some effort into it and make it worthwhile similar to what happened with the HULK movies.

The possible 70's DD movie looked like it could've been pretty cool, but I'm not too upset that it's not leading to a movie. I'm looking forward to seeing the inclusion of Daredevil to the Marvel Cinematic Universe someday, it may be awhile, but I am excited to see it nonetheless. With the movies Marvel Studios has put out, they've never really had the need to show off their darker side, so there's that. I think Marvel Studios/Disney could be able to handle DD's darker tone, reports say Iron Man 3 is supposed to be pretty dark, so that'll define whether or not they can cross that boundary. Disney/Marvel Studios is also pretty good at respecting the source material, so I don't think they'll get it wrong if/when they make a movie. Daredevil also shouldn't be hugely connected to the MCU, like regular visits from Thor or Iron Man, but there should be references here and there. We should also keep in mind that Daredevil has interacted with Avengers before while keeping the dark and serious tone, see Born Again.

70's DD would be awesome. But he definately shouldn't be in the Avengers. I want them to add Ant man and Vision in the next avengers and in the third add Ms Marvel. That is enough characters, if you add to many you end up with characters no one cares about that don't get screen time.

Any Frank Miller arc would definitely be fitting to a good reboot of a DD flick to be honest. Perhaps the Last Rites story from October '91 to January '92 would be good, even if Miller didn't write that.

Well at this point since it's obviously going to revert to Marvel I see two main options;

1. They go with a gritty take, preferably in line with the amazing sizzle reel that's been making the rounds on the ledge, exploring the street level side of the Marvel cinematic universe, with Matt Murdock being inspired by the superheroes who've appeared.

2. Since Sony seems (rightly, from a business perspective at least) determined to hold onto the rights to Spider-Man, Marvel is unlikely to ever get to use that character in their movies. So I would think they return Daredevil to his original incarnation as more or less the Green Arrow to Spidey's Batman (that is, a pretty blatant rip-off) and use him to do the high flying adventure movie that they would make with Spidey if they had the chance. This could inspiration from the current Mark Waid run and give us a version of Daredevil we haven't seen in a long time.

To my mind though, we're probably not going to see a Daredevil movie for a while, since Marvel has its movie projects planned for the next several years and might not be able to squeeze in a Daredevil movie. Ideally though, I'd like to see something of a fusion of the two ideas, with the first movie being mostly bright with some dark themes and undercurrents, and the sequel(s) delving into the darker side of the character, while still keeping things from getting as boringly predictable as they can get when Daredevil is stuck in a gritty cycle of his life getting progressively worse.

I would also request that they keep Elektra, Bullseye, and Kingpin out of the movie, save for perhaps some mentions of the Kingpin as a shadowy underworld figure, and avoid the problem of putting all of a character's villains and characters arcs into a single, unfocused movie.

Even if my opinion is way off though, I hope any Daredevil movie that gets made turns out good.

I think they should add characters to the cinematic universe outside of the Avengers. Gives it the feeling of an actual universe, instead of a bunch of tie-ins orbiting the Avengers movies. Daredevil is a great character to start on, so reverting the rights to Marvel is probably the best call. As for the story, I agree with the consensus going around that it should be based on Born Again (there's even an appearance by Cap, Iron Man, and Thor, so we've got the cameo done right there). Actually, you could do a pretty close interpretation of Born Again and it would work. Just replace Nuke with Gladiator.

I think that a Daredevil project should be put on hold. It's clear that the Daredevil too closely resembles batman (in characterization not powers)and since EVERY SINGLE super hero movie is now influenced by Nolans work, it'd be way too easy for "Daredevil" to become "Marvel Presents: Red Batman"

I think DD works better as a comic book character. I don't think any studio is going to do what would be necessary to make him work. I do like the idea of the 70s thing if it was directed with an interesting visual style.

What should have happened to Daredevil? Basically this. The character simply isn't popular enough to have a movie without some sort of uniqueness separating it from the pack. And Daredevil in 70s NYC? That's awesome.

IMO avengers shouldn't be involved. The current Mark Waid run is beautiful & the origin by Frank Miller & Jeph Loeb were beautiful too. I think they should make it more 'Mark Waid-ish' like. Or Fox should let Affleck direct it this time.

A daredevil movie could help to introduce more street level capes like Luke Cage or Iron fist. Also, he teams up with a lot of Marvels more famous heroes (like Spidey). And let's not forget that despite not becoming an actual member, Daredevil played a role in the creation of the New Avengers and should be included in the film (if there ever is one). He wouldn't work in a TV series simply because his Rogue gallery isn't big enough compared to other heroes.
