Nocenti Moves from CATWOMAN to KLARION THE WITCH BOY

Come get all of the details about the new comic!

More change is coming to the The New 52! io9 has revealed that CATWOMAN writer Ann Nocenti is leaving the series to work on KLARION THE WITCH BOY with artist Trevor McCarthy in October. Meanwhile, io9 writer Genevieve Valentine will take over writing duties on CATWOMAN. When asked what makes Klarion special, Nocenti said, "Klarion isn't naturally heroic. He's not out to save the world or rescue anyone. He's a mischievous teenager who has done some bad things, but perhaps there's more to him. So what came to mind was an occult coming-of-age story."

This series will serve as the character's debut in The New 52 universe. Nocenti talked a bit about what genres the book will cover and where the narrative will go. "The Klarion series is a mix of sci-fi, horror and mysticism. Trevor McCarthy is a fabulous artist and he's bringing a wild, inventive style to the book. The new Klarion series explores the dynamic: Is technology saving or destroying the planet?" The writer added that she and McCarthy are creating a new roster of young witches and wizards for the title.

As for CATWOMAN, io9 says Garry Brown will provide the art and Valentine stated Selina Kyle is a character she truly cares about and wants to focus on her moral dilemmas. "She's a character close to my heart; I'm particularly looking forward to examining the nature of what it means to rule – particularly for her, since she's absolutely got what it takes, and it's just a matter of what happens when she reaches a line she knows she can't cross."

Here's some additional artwork io9 provided.

@vitalius: Well, since Nocenti's Catwoman was crap and wasn't cancelled for 30 issues, I'm not sure that will be true for this.

Catwoman is part of the Bat-franchise,so that alone will keep her books selling while a unknown nobody like Klarion will be lucky if he isnt cancelled by the time issue2 hits.

& honestly she is DC's second most famous female character after WonderWoman. So, I can see why DC would want to keep her book going for a while until something clicked. Which is why all of DC's movies fail, they re just a huge studio sell-out. Maybe not DC's fault, but WB's.

However, villains like Catwoman & Klarion should stay villains.

Disagree, characters are better when they are able to be a hero, anti hero or villain. Granted Catwoman and Klarion should be a bit more sinister, they can work out as anything.

That said just because they have their own book means nothing to the point of if they are a hero,.

I actually disagree with your sentiment. I like my villains as villains. I kind of get what you're saying, give the characters some leeway, don't make them so black and white, sure. But that's what makes certain characters so great. If someone tried to humanize the Joker so that his evil made sense it would ruin the character. Now Catwoman isn't the same type, and I don't know much about Klarion, but it's still changing the idea behind a character. It can sometimes be for the better, but in my opinion, it's gotten to the point where it's really difficult to have any actual villains anymore. Too many of them have been deconstructed and rebuilt as "anti heroes" to believe that half of the new villains are really that sinister. I'm starting to expect villains to be misunderstood or have some sob story. Which would be fine, except that when they do have that background, it's all of these tired and over used tropes that have no impact any more.

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to give my 2 cents (or maybe 12).

I don't care for Catwoman, so Nocenti being on the title never really effected me. But from reading the Katana series, I'm happy for fans of the character that she's off the title. That picture of Catwoman looks like it's from one of the covers of the current Batman/Superman book.

I just like many of my fellow DC fans have been begging for this day to come. Ive always longed for DC to barrage me with ongoings about characters that i dont care about while at the same time snubbing long established characters with huge fan bases such as shazam...

Klarion getting his own series is pretty cool. If Nocenti weren't writing I'd probably give the first few issues a read. But honestly, Nocenti hasn't written a single thing that I've liked. And I refuse to even give her work a glance unless I hear very unexpectedly spectacular reviews.

I'm surprised Nocenti lasted as long as she has on Catwoman. Every single issue I've read under her pen has been absolutely incoherent and just plain torturous to read. I have no idea who has continued to buy the series while she was writing, but it's good to hear that Catwoman has a chance to be good again.

On a different note, it's sad to hear that McCarthy's beautiful art will be wasted with Nocenti's writing. The guy is one of DC's best. Especially with J.H. Williams III gone.

It's big news that she's finally off Catwoman. I hope she yet again becomes a good character and a poor version of her written terribly by some wannabee writer.

Why is Nocenti still getting any work?

This will sound like a slam, but I mean it in all seriousness. At least with Klarion, Nocenti's scripts which are usually nonsensical messes will somewhat fit. Anything inexplicable that happens in Klarion can be cracked up to magic. No such excuse exists with Catwoman.

I'm really glad that Klarion the Witchboy is getting his own series. Ever since his appearance in Morrison's Seven Soldiers series it seems like there's a lot more to be explored about his character. I think the DC Universe could benefit from exploring more neutral characters.

Brubaker's Catwoman is easily one of my top ten runs on a comic ever. Here's to hoping this new writer does the character justice that she has yet to have in the New 52.

Don't you mean Teen Titans? Cause Suicide Squad is only going from #1 cause of the new members ( well that & the FE event )

Aren't they changing writers though too for Suicide Squad? It looks like DC is taking a page from Marvel and relaunching old titles with new creative teams (personally, I think it's a great decision) what with Teen Titans, Suicide Squad and the upcoming Deathstroke.

Well, we have been asking for characters other than Batman to get series. But I guess what DC didn't realize was that we didn't mean characters this obscure. The three I hear people pleading for the most are Cyborg, Shazam!, and Martian Manhunter. I guess DC thinks in terms of one extreme or the other.

As for Klarion, between the fact that he is a random obscure character not many folks care too much about, and that Nocenti is writing, this will probably be cancelled at number eight, because DC seems to be trying things for eight issues. If not it will probably be cancelled at number twelve which is generally their next increment. I myself am absolutely not willing to give Nocenti another chance after the debacle that was Katana.

But I wonder how long this has been planned for. Because remember a while back when all the DC books had that "Enter the Dark" ad in the back of them with all the Dark family characters in a wooden rowboat, and we were all theorizing that the cat pictured in the picture was Teekl.

I have no idea who Genevieve Valentine is. And what the heck is "io9"?

I don't feel confident in Noncenti's writing. Don't like to bash a person but her previous stuff have not been catching or engaging but instead go into convoluted story arcs. Kind of hope she perhaps hits the right tone with the book but kind of hope Klarion survives and isn't messed around as a character. I personally think its a good move that DC is giving Klarion an ongoing and as someone said he has the potential for being the Kid Loki for DC. Guess I will have to wait and see. Klarion seems to be making an appearance in Teen Titans during its Future's End tie-in so there was that but didn't expect him to get an ongoing.

I wonder if this is a trend of somekind with DC:

  • Take poor writer
  • Add Kirby character of low to mid-level prominence
  • Watch it flop

I don't get it. It's great news that Nocenti isn't on the book anymore. No disrespect to her, but she was just hurting the character. WHy does DC release books that everybody knows are gonna flop or don't want to read. Instead of putting out ongoings of characters people have been asking for - Booster Gold, Shazam, Cyborg, and many more- they put out books like this, Foreverpeople, lobo, Sinestro, more bat books,Aquaman and the others, and other 50 books that got cancelled in the new 52. DC makes idiotic decision sometimes. At-least Marvel is putting out loads of books of characters people want to read.

@jayc1324: The only title I can think of cancelled in the Bat family (that was not one of the fifty Batman titles) is Batwing, and that was after it was skirting around the 13K mark (IIRC) for months. Which is considerably lower than the danger zone, and the reason that it continued as long as it did with such abysmal numbers was mostly because it was a Bat-family book.

I agree that a reboot of the entire Catwoman title would be what's best (which is different from just straight up cancelling, which is what I took your post to mean), because it has....not been a good title to say the least. Makes me wistful for the Brubaker run in a big way.

It's a Bat-family title, they're not gonna cancel it unless it gets to dismal numbers. And why would they cancel it when they could just replace the creator (which is what they're doing) and turn the quality around? Nocenti is the reason it's crap.

This sucks.....you mean to tell me we have to wait till October for her to leave?

Seriously though, I did enjoy the first few issues of Catwoman under her (until i realized Nocenti had no clue what to do beyond a premise) so maybe she'll do better with Kalrion where no one is expecting anything.

Now she can go into her own little corner of the DCU and mess up a character that no one really cares about. Too bad Trevor McCarthy is stuck on it.

I'll give Catwoman a shot. Brown's a good artist, but I have no opinion on Valentine. Any change for that title is a welcome one, though.

@battle_forum_junkie: I agree wholeheartedly. But I think you're being generous when it comes to lifespan of that series. The way DC operates, I'd give it 10 issues tops.

Anyway, it would be interesting to see someone who's typically portrayed as a villain get his own comic. Maybe they'll tone his villany down and show his life with that quirky cast pictured above. Who'm I kidding. This book will try to go for the "wow"s. Oh well. Let's see.
