I'm going to be pretty upset if they brought in all those new members just to kill them all immediately. Seems like it'd be a huge cop-out to me; I was ready to see a whole new dynamic. That aside, I like that they're bringing the walkers to the forefront again as a viable threat.

Damn, this makes me realize that I still need to watch the first three seasons. Which makes me realize that I first need to read all of the comics. As if my to-read list wasn't big enough...

What issues should I read before watching the first season without getting spoilers for the comics? (From what I've heard there is some variation, but the TV show still kind of follows the story in the comics, however I might be wrong here.)

The TV show branches off from the comics rather quickly. I would say that you could watch all three seasons (1 and 2 are streaming on Netflix) without getting any major comic book spoilers. That being said, I would recommend picking up the first trade volume to familiarize yourself with the characters.(many characters from the comic are not in the show and vice versa) Definitely catch up on both as quickly as possible, you won't be disappointed.

you should read ALL the comics

but

you don't need to read them first....the show has gotten to the point where even though I've read all of the comics I still have no idea what is going to happen on the show

I used to trade-wait for the comic, but burned through the last two volumes pretty quickly, so now I'm issue-to-issue and can barely wait that long. #113 had a crazy ending, haven't had an opportunity to read #114 yet. also really excited for #115 and all the craziness its sure to bring.

As for the TV show, I'm re-watching season three to gear up for season four. Though I love the show, the unexpected "Gut Punches" provided by the comics have prepared me for anything that could happen in the TV show, so I haven't really been surprised by anything yet. Still love every minute of it though.

I can't wait for this, definitely keen to find out what the threat is, they specified it isn't the walkers or the humans, it can only really be infection, but I'm not sure. I think they could be lying and it might be the children turning sociopathic due to the world hardening them in an unhealthy way, an obvious nod to the comic books.

This season looks truer to the comic books in raw tempo too, unlike season 2 which was way too slow and season 3 which was way too fast with no break off points or character development, they seemed to develop characters and relatonships in the interim period between 2 & 3 without really justifying some of the bold actions they would make. Hopefully with Scott Gimple [Director of one of he best episodes so far, 'Home', Season 3 Episode 12] It can reach its true potential.

I'm interested to see if this show will either gain more ratings or less (especially after the disappointing finale, making the so-called "diehard fans" stop watching the show :P). Isn't The Walking Dead currently the most watched-drama series in cable history? I know that ratings don't define the show (well in most instances, these days they do) but I find it hilarious whenever someone calls this show a failure...

The first volume (a volume being six issues, the hardcovers cover twelve issues) matches up with the first season very closely up until the last episode, or episode and a half, so either medium will spoil the other. Season 2 covers the next one or two volumes (don't quite remember), but with much bigger changes than the first, so they will spoil each other, but not make either one less exciting. Season 3 kind of jumped around grabbing random parts of random volumes and doesn't really care about matching up anymore, so either medium is pretty much spoiler free from there.

Honestly season 3 was pretty lame to me. If season 4 isn't a resounding bounce back, I'll probably stop watching the show.

@cdw101: Nope. Robert Kirkman has said he had no plans, Dwight seems the closest we'll get. But in about 10 years when the sales start to drop I wouldn't be surprised if they do.

Yeah Season 3 felt short BIG time for me, and sadly it was an upward slope for the first half only to have a very, VERY disappointing second half after last winter's hiatus. Season 4 better impress the hell out of me or I'm just not going to bother, seriously.
