Battle of the Week RESULTS: Green Lantern (John Stewart) vs. Ronan the Accuser

The clash between the two cosmic characters is over! Come see who's left standing once the dust has settled.

For our Character of the Month's latest challenge, John Stewart, a.k.a. Green Lantern, had to face Marvel's Ronan the Accuser. Would the DC hero's willpower and Green Power Ring be enough to take down the powerful Kree? Ronan's Universal Weapon may grant him a variety of powers, but unfortunately for him, it looks like one of them isn't "beat John Stewart." According to the voters, Green Lantern wins!

No, John Stewart didn't win after busting out some epic dance moves. Instead, voters think he's able to bust out some epic constructs and eventually keep his opponent down for the count. Ronan's a heavy-hitter and his weapon will provide John with a number of obstacles, but in the end, most voters think it just isn't enough to guarantee a victory over the ring-slinger. With that ring on his finger, a majority of the community thinks Stewart's strength, durability, creative mind and strong willpower will allow him to eventually earn the victory over Ronan. Will it be an easy and swift win? Probably not. Will he eventually win? Well, most people believe the answer is "yes."

The Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814 earned 55% of the votes. Ronan received 40% and just 4% think this one is too close to call. If you think the vote should have gone differently, spreading the word and presenting good arguments in the next battle is way more effective than complaining. Now, let's take a better look at some of the points that were made by Viners.

I'm going to really go into why I give it to John now.

First, to toss off any possible bias you may believe I have towards Ronan or John, I actually prefer Ronan as a character, and Guy Gardner is my favorite GL, not John.

John is a very versatile and powerful Green Lantern. Ronan is a more versatile character, though he is less powerful. However, due to Johns defenses, his damage, and his willpower John should take a majority of the fights he has with Ronan.

Ronan has a plethora of attacks to use against John, ranging from gravity manipulation to use of an absolute zero field. However, John has defenses significant enough to prevent being majorly affected by Ronan's more obscure abilities. Another factor that helps John is his speed, which means he can react to Ronan's attacks rather easily, as its been shown, he's reacted faster than the Flash. This means that he can address Ronan's attacks easily, dodging and blocking them as he needs. In addition to this, he survived the destruction of a planet. The ring should protect John from pretty much anything Ronan can throw.

John is very powerful offensively. From throwing down with the Justice league to merkin' some Black Lanterns, John is an established powerhouse. He's been shown oneshotting Superman, injuring Fernus, containing Martian Manhunter, and even beating down with Hal Jordan.

John most likely has the most willpower of the Earth lanterns, as he's the only one I know who actually had his willpower exceed what the Ring could comprehend. He's also well known for creating the most stable constructs, even ones that could function independently. This means that John can outperform Ronan in sheer military might if he wishes.

Overall, John should beat Ronan 8-9/10

I think that Ronan would win.

1) The Universal Weapon gives roughly the same power profile as a Lantern; flight, energy projection/absorption etc. So it's not like either one has a versatility advantage.

2) Ronan just seems to have hung with more powerful folks, fighting against the Silver Surfer and immobilizing Nova and Black Bolt with his energy fields. This seems more impressive than what John has done. And that's to say nothing of the black hole generation and time-manipulation I'm seeing thrown around.

3) Ronan is more likely to go all-out in their situation where as John could very easily be distracted by civilians.

Ronan is one heavy hitter, GotG, Avengers, and FF all had their difficulties taking down this guy. He's not a Herald level power cosmic wielder, but he certainly packs a wallop. In addition to being a one strong/fast dude, he's a trained Kree soldier and military genius, key word being "military". He is the best of the Kree Empire.

John is a regular man, but a brilliant soldier with a powerful ring. This fight is going to come down to their weapons and tactics.

Ronan's weapon uses cosmic energy to manipulate matter, shoot energy blasts, absorb energy, control gravity, create force fields and teleport. John's ring can shoot energy blasts, create shields and anything else that he can imagine.

This could go a number of different ways. John can win due to his creativity and that is probably the key to him winning.

I've decided to go with too close to call in the end. Mostly because I think Ronan's powers are unpredictable, and because it's unknowable (in my opinion) how some of those powers would interact with Stewart's powers. I would guess that Stewart could overpower him more consistently than not, but Ronan certainly has some good high showings, and there is at least a reasonable argument that he could negate the GL's abilities. So, too close to call.

John Stewart Vs. Ronan

This battle would generate enough revenues to make Time Warner and Disney happy.

Both combatants are highly trained and experienced soldiers. John was a marine sniper and is currently one of the best ring slingers Oa has enlisted. Ronan quickly rose through the ranks of the Kree military and became Supreme Accuser. Intelligence/military strategy or whatever you want to call it is even my book.

John possess superhuman strength and the ability to travel at speeds twice as fast as the speed of sound (while not in space) when in possession of his ring, but is only as strong and fast as a highly trained human when not using his ring. On the other hand, being of the Kree race, Ronan is able to lift multiple tons naturally. Additionally, Ronan's exosuit provides him the strength to lift approximately 80 tons.

This fight is will undoubtedly be decided by who is able to gain a significant advantage through the use of their primary weapon. John wields the most power weapon in the DC universe, which has the ability to: project energy, create force fields and constructs, allow it's wear to phase, become invisible, refract light, absorb energy, matter manipulation, create pocket dimensions, alter minds, etc........ Being an Accuser, Ronan possess a Universal Weapon, which is also an extremely powerful tool. The universal weapon grants Ronan the power of: disintegration, rearrangement, or transmutation of matter; projection of concussive energy blasts; absorption of energy; control over gravity; creation of force fields and time-motion displacement fields; and interstellar teleportation along hyperspatial passages.

The weapons are immensely powerful and John Stewart and Ronan are both masters at their use, but the green lantern power ring has the edge in this scenario due to the sheer number of things it is able to do and the fact that it is only limited by John infinite willpower. However, would John be willing to use the ring in ways necessary to to defeat Ronan while in a populated area?

This fight has all the potential of going either way, so I am going to vote "too close to call." You know what they say... "Any given Monday" or something like that.
