Botanist Alec Holland became the avatar of the Green, known as the Swamp Thing, following his death in a swamp as a result of a horrific accident. With the ability to control any form of plant life, Swamp Thing uses his powers to protect both the human and the plant worlds.
Abby is the niece of Anton Arcane, former wife of Matthew Cable (now known as Dream's raven Matthew) and was wife of the Swamp Thing and mother of Tefé Holland. In the new 52, she is the still the niece of Anton, but no longer Swamp Thing's wife.

When his life support was shut off, Matthew died, but was resurrected as the raven companion for Morpheus, King of Dreams.

Dr. Jason Woodrue is the Floronic Man, a plant/human hybrid and super-villain who wishes to eradicate all animal life. In some versions, he is responsible for the creation of Poison Ivy. He is an enemy of The Atom and Swamp Thing.

Linda Holland was born Linda Olsen Ridge some time in the late 1940s. She was likely a direct descendant of Damian Ridge and his wife, also named Linda Olsen Ridge. She would later become the wife of Alec Holland, the human template for the Swamp Thing.
