After departing St. Jude, in a fury, Slick Jake MacGregor encounters Amazo. The killer android bonds with MacGregor, fusing MacGregor with it's own android body. With a lull in crises, the Vixen prods Aquaman into renewing contact with his estranged wife, Mera. After their debate, the Vixen is lured away to the kitchen, by the aroma of texas chili. Dale Gunn teaches the Gypsy, and J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter From Mars, how to prepare texas chili. A near mishap, in the kitchen, is averted by the Elongated Man.

The Elongated Man joins his wife, Sue Dibny, for a morning jog around the neighborhood. The Martian Manhunter questions the Gypsy, but receives no answers. Aquaman wrestles with the decision to renew contact with Mera. Constable Mal Parkins is murdered by Amazo/MacGregor. Giving full vent to it's/his fury, Amazo/MacGregor destroys the town of St. Jude. The Elongated Man, and Dibny, are drawn to a conflict between Paco Ramone, and Henry Heywood.

Ramone has taken umbrage at Heywood's romantic interest in Ramone's sister, Rosita. The Elongated Man quells the conflict. To appease Ramone, Heywood asks Ramone's permission to court Rosita. After giving the matter some consideration, Ramone properly introduces his sister to Heywood. The matter settled, Dibny, the Elongated Man, Heywood, and Ramone respond to a summons from the Justice League of America. Ramone reveals his new Vibe costume.

J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter From Mars addresses the Justice League of America. Aquaman has gone missing. Amazo has attacked, and destroyed St. Jude. The Vixen suspects that Aquaman has departed, in search of Mera, but keeps this information to herself. The Justice League of America travel to the Yukon territory, in search of Amazo. The Justice League of America speculate on how Amazo escaped Superman's Fortress of Solitude.

The Elongated Man, Steel, and the Vixen each pick up possible traces of Amazo, in three different directions. The Martian Manhunter splits the Justice League of America up into four teams of two, to investigate. Gunn questions the tactics of dividing the team. Inexperienced in leadership, J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter From Mars, is plagued with self-doubt. Amazo/MacGregor ambushes Gunn, and the Martian Manhunter, incapacitating them both. Aquaman dives beneath the surface of the sea, to seek out Mera.
