Men or Women, which group writes the opposite sex better/realistically?
women win this one (no contest)
Literally no contest on this one lol.
Some will even write them way better than real men, like no way a man like this exists, way too good to be realistic 😭.
I guess JK Rowling write good male characters, but they're just that, good.
Neil Gaiman, Brandon Sanderson and George RR Martin have all written fenomenal female characters.
female authors write men as some wattpad fantasy slave and women as some self-insert power fantasy for the musty rainbow haired virgins (you don't have to look far to see a few examples lol)
there are some male authors that are shitty but most great female characters are still written by men
just look at Avatar The Last Airbender and compare it to the recent cringe trash and my point is proven
It's very case-by-case, but a lot of my favorite authors with fantastic female characters are men, so it'll probably have to be men for me. Guys like Stephen King, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Ryukishi, Konoko Nasu, Oda, and many others
Not to disrespect female writers when you have heavy hitters like JK Rowling and Robin Hobb, but it's mostly an exposure. A lot of well acclaimed books I read are by men, so my exposure is slightly more limited
This is a messy ass topic lmao.
I think it's pretty equal, the bad men writers tip the scales because some of their portrayals of women are just....offensively bad and kinda hilarious.
there are good and bad writers. If something was made by a good writer, no one feels unrealistic. That being said, I've been told that "I'm written by a woman"- so clearly, there is an average difference. Knowing what I've seen in some movies, I'd say male writers are worse on average, but most content I consume is written by males. As far as books go, I've never read a book so bad that the character's gender became a crucial reason as to why they are so poorly written.

Your choice to provide an example for well written female characters by men, but not a poorly written male character by woman is a rather odd one to me.
Mostly depends on what they are trying to write, but if is anything related to how they interact between themselves, I would say!
Women do better. (Now, in a general sense neither does it good)
If you guys watch K-Drama you'll know that Women write Men better overall, this can be said for most of the world. Women try to fantasize Men as Knight-type of people that while strong, can be loving and careful without reducing their masculinity, only a minority group of modern SJW/Extreme Feminist Women will try to write men as unlawful raping creatures.
Men only write Women to be their sub-partners or sexual tools and for them to have some savior complex with them representing them as the Weak sex and nothing more than that, rare occasions would make them write them good.
Women more often than not are always to forgive and keep the relationship stable and active even when Men threat them bad, beat them, betray them or anything like that, the opposite is not that common...
@anthp2000: You have to write men and women differently if you want to have good characters, there are distinct differences between the two when it comes to world perception and thought process, you cant really write default characters then randomly call them “men” or “women”.
@dingus__: I understand this after a certain threshold of detail in character work (which frankly doesn't exist with most media that concerns the majority of this site), but this distinction is also a lame excuse that's been used by writers who don't care to write female characters properly or at all.
@anthp2000: Oh definitely, writers abuse it a lot, but still, the rule stands.
How is this possible...?
I'm confused myself. Seems to be another bug.
Women writing men.
Reason being both women and me are far more inclined to include emotional elements of men was well as normed masculinity.
Men when writing woman however will tend to either given them over exaggerated emotional qualities, somewhat shallow characteristics, or turn them into straight up Riply or Sarah Connors
I'm gonna be different and say that men excel women at this IN BOTH WAYS. That is, the best written female characters are by men, BUT the worst written female characters are also by men. Women have written really good male characters, but not as good as the best written female characters by men, BUT women haven't written male characters as trash as the worst written female characters by men. Hope that makes sense.
