It's Like 24 But With Superheroes
Anybody watch the TV show 24? Well this comic seems to be a lot like that. This issue (and the last issue also) plays out really slowly, almost as if it is in real time (which is awsome). The army-esque situation, the secret plot and the fact that this issue pretty much unfolds in real time, make this feel like watching 24 with War Machine and Ares thrown in for extra fun.
It really is like that. It might sound weird, but that's how I would describe it. It's like 24 with War Machine.
The fight between Ares and War Machine is really cool and it takes up most of the issue. Though the art doesn't seem as good as it did when this series began, I can honestly say that the fight wouldn't be as cool without the efforts of Leonardo Manco (the artist for this issue, and all the previous ones too). So that's good. Some people might think that War Machine and Ares are just mindlessly thrown together, but that's wrong. Ares is used here to get into War Machine's head. We learn about how he thinks. War Machine is discovering his motivations as well as who he is through listening to Ares's crazy rant (which is fun to read). All in all, Ares's presence greatly improves the story.
This book isn't great. It doesn't have an epic scope (quite the opposite) and nothing major will happen to the characters. This isn't an essential read. However, it's fun. Fun... but not anything else. It's like 24 with War Machine. It's not bad but it's not great.
So what are my final ratings?
Story - 7.5 out of 10
Art - 7.5 out of 10
