Change Is Seldom Easy
The Daily Planet gets demolished as the new one is presented to Metropolis. An alien threat arrives in Metropolis threatening civilians.
My Thoughts:Superman was one of many characters who had significant changes made in this new relaunch. Not only are his red trunks gone, so is his relationship with Lois Lane. The former being long overdue, the latter something of a disappointment to many. While Action Comics focuses on a young Superman before donning the costume, this series is set in the present. George Perez, a comic legend jumps abroad this series as the writer. He's accompanied by artist Jesus Merino.
This first issue has all the necessities and qualities of a dynamic beginning yet something about it didn't get me that excited. Superman is probably my favorite character and I got bored while reading this issue a couple of times. The story begins by introducing readers to the new Daily Planet. The old one is being demolished making way for the new and improved. The main theme seems to be change as we get a feel for all the changes in Metropolis. Up in the sky we see a disappointed Superman as he watches the presentation from above. Then we see a flashback scene of Clark Kent and Lois Lane in a disagreement over the new changes, specifically the fact that Morgan Edge is involved with it. I did like the dramatic writing during the Clark and Lois scenes. They were probably the most interesting parts of the comic and they were only talking. The action parts of the comic came off pretty lackluster.
I think one of the things that I didn't like was that we are left with no idea what direction this series is heading. The first "villain" was already defeated and from the looks of it, not coming back anytime soon (thankfully). I was hoping to get an introduction to the main villain of this first story arc and an idea of where the series may be heading. While I liked a lot of the things introduced to us, the lack of a significant villain was a disappointment.
I definitely enjoyed Jesus Merino's art. I liked the way he drew Superman and how he didn't overdo it and make Superman look like he was on steroids. Brian Buccellato is doing great work as a colorist in not only this series but in the Flash as well. I wasn't a fan of the George Perez cover. It looked pretty ugly in my opinion. The concept was fine but Superman's chest proportion seemed off.
While we're introduced to the changes involving Superman and his supporting cast, we're also left with a small feeling of emptiness. With no idea of where this series is heading it's hard to get excited for the next issue.
