Love Most Innocent, And Lost
This is an issue I don't have a lot of strong thoughts about. In fact, for a while now, Supergirl's been a series that just hasn't really brought out much in me. I enjoy it, sure, but I don't have a whole lot to reflect on usually. This cover's on a thin line between genericly bland and fairly interesting.
The artwork is on the better side of Mahmud Asrar's work, and it was already generally very nice. The linework is nice and solid, here and there it feels almost like the amazing work of Rafael Albuquerque. And the colors are very solid, almost leaping off the page with such energy and fervor.
This issue juggles some really nice concepts with some so-so ones and decent execution. The opening essentially summarizes Supergirl's status quo and m.o. now that she's settled on Earth. It's a nice jumping on point for new readers, with some deep introspection that doesn't linger depressingly. And it leads right into a nice comedic moment, and the setup for the plot of the issue. Now, when the solicit said Supergirl was going to go on a date, I was extraordinarily skeptikal, considering we were two issues away from this at the time, and she still couldn't speak English. But of course, Sibohan's brother knows her enough, and they can communicate on a very basic level, reading facial expressions, motions, and just general atmosphere. It's actually kind of sweet, I'm always seeing shades of Ico in Supergirl, which is really weird. But it's a nice theme of general innocence.
The fight scene in this issue drags on a bit, and constantly teeters between awesome and blurring together. It sets up some interesting questions, but also leads into an obnoxious 'I attract danger so I can't be around my only friends in the world' moment. It's a pretty played out cliche, and it's not super well handled here, I mean Sibohan is a BANSHEE. And not to mention that SHE STILL SPEAKS BARELY ANY ENGLISH.
In Conclusion: 3.5/5
Huh.... I started out saying I didn't have much to say but.... I was a little burnt out on writing at the time, but once I started thinking about things I actually got kind of rolling. This issue had some pretty gorgeous artwork, and some really nice innocent bits, but the ending was cliche and a little confusing because it stunted what little 'Earth-settling' development had finally been happening.
