Venom #10 - Road Trip, Part One

4

Just when you started getting used to the way Flash Thompson operates as Venom, everything is about to change. It's a new direction for Flash and the symbiote as Rick Remender welcomes Lan Medina on pencils.

Picking up from the aftermath of last issue (and Spider-Island), Flash pays his final respects at a funeral...unfortunately there is an unwelcome guest that will change Flash's life.

The Good

Rick Rememnder has been developing Flash character throughout this series. He's evolved more in ten issues than other characters have in ten years.

You might recall from earlier issues, Flash Thompson's secret identity has been compromised. WIth 'the enemy' knowing his secret, this puts him in a vulnerable situation as he has his mother and Betty to think about. This brings about the reason for the series to go in a new direction. Seeing the struggle Flash goes through along with the action and fight that appears here, readers should be thankful to have Remender still on board.

I was excited in the beginning the moment it was announced Tony Moore was the artist. As it turned out he wasn't going to be handling all the issues, I found myself focused on the lack of his art, despite who else was handling the art duties. With Lan Medina, I have to say it's a perfect fit. Medina's style is different than Moore's but it feels so right seeing his depiciton of Flash, Betty, Flash as Venom, etc.

The Bad

The idea of Venom on the run has potential. Just based on the first part, it almost feels a tiny bit far fetched. Flash may not have a huge network of allies but you would think there would be someone he could turn to over the problem of his secret identity. The run in he has here would have given him the perfect opportunity to seek help. But then this would have been an extremely short arc.

The Crime-Master and Jack O'Lantern are proving to be formidable foes but I'd like to see more villains added to Venom's rogues gallery.

The Verdict

Flash Thompson is beginning a new direction. Having to leave the comfort of his controllers and going AWOL isn't going to make his life easier. This will give us more of a chance to see his character grow even further. Rick Remender has evolved Flash beyond what was thought possible. As Venom is now known to more of the heroes after Spider-Island, the fact that he's on the run paints a bigger target on him. The reason for him being on the run makes sense even if it feels a little forced for the sake of generating the story. But the door is now open to take him to other places and to interact with other characters in the Marvel Universe. Lan Medina is a welcome addition on pencil duties and I just might not have to complain (to myself) about the lack of Tony Moore's pencils on the book. You thought you knew what Rick Remender had in store for Venom but everything is now changing and the excitement is building.

I thought the last issue was better than this one. I like how Jack O'Lantern is being portrayed, but Crime Master seems very ordinary to me. I hope they have a few Venom flip out moments. I think Flash dealing with the nature of the symbiote is interesting.

Im wondering how Flash is going to do this..I mean he can't have the symbiote on for more than 48 hours...so has he already gone passed this or is he taking it off from time to time? o.O

I assume this on the run arc is to setup for next year's "New Fantastic Four" story arc. Still, I love this comic and it is frequently mentioned to new and old comic fans I meet who haven't read it.

no he can have it on for more than that amount of time just the millitary wansnt leting him cus they where worried about a perminant bond forming

flash is oviously more concerned with the mission at hand than that threat to his health

I can't give Remender enough praise for what he has done with this character! Medina's art is smooth and never hard on the eyes.

This issue is a great bridge between the the beginning of Venom and the new direction the series is going in.

Venom is probably marvel's second best book at the moment just behind amazing spider-man. Also you can't beat it for 2.99 against marvels unessacary 3.99 price tag on most of its other books.

As usual this book is amazing. Remender 's an excellent writer and is giving us the best Marvel has to offer in Uncanny X-Force and Venom. I'm a bit sad that I can't fit Secret Avengers into my budget when he starts writing duties there.

Medina's art indeed is pretty good. Though I still prefer the more gritty vibe Moore and Fowler have.

Great issue in a great series!

Here's my one problem though: I picked up 6 Marvel books this week, and "Title Character Kicks Captain America's Ass" was the storyline in 3 of them. That's 50% of the books I read this week! Couldn't they have had a meeting where they said "hey guys, maybe we should space out Cap's ass whuppin's so it doesn't look like he just jumps from one beatdown to the next?" Sad times for Caparino.

lol very true.

And i barley got into Caps character but in the title he appears in he seems more like Civil War Iron Man...not a great attitude.
