Uncanny X-Men #2

4

Cyclops has formed a new squad of powerful X-Men just in time to face Mr. Sinister's crazy new plan. Looks like Cyclops might be in over his head this time.

Cyclops has brought together the most powerful X-Men on Utopia as part of his 'Extinction Squad.' You would think going up against someone like Mr. Sinister wouldn't be too much for them to handle but this isn't the same old Mr. Sinister they all knew.

The Good

Mr. Sinister is a villain that sometimes has been cool and other times really lame. Even though he had a good death and came back as a women (sort of), having him come back from the dead has been a good thing for readers. Leave it Kieron Gillen to finally add a new layer to the villain and give the X-Men a villain that can actually give them a run for their money. Yes, we want the heroes to win but if they simply swoop in and save the day with minimal effort, stories get boring. This 'new' Sinister is a welcome addition to the X-Men villains now that Regenesis is underway.

Gillen delivers a nice mixture of humor and suspense in his script. Whether it was intentional or not, reading Namor deliver a certain Star Wars line made me snicker. Hope was a character I never really cared for but the way she is used here is enough to make me gain some respect for her. The combination of Carlos Pacheco, Jorge Molina and Rodney Buchemi adds an interesting mix to the current action along with the flashback sequences.

The Bad

It's a strange mix where there is some action but it almost doesn't feel like enough. It might not be a fair complaint since it is important to listen to what Mr. Sinster's plan is. Perhaps it's having these big guns on the team and them getting taken out of the action suddenly. Also, the coming of the other Celestials almost feels like a tease for the next issue. Basically, I'm hungry for the big action that's about to hit the fan next issue.

Giving it some more thought, I have to wonder what's next for Mr. Sinister after all this. Fingers crossed it ends well.

The Verdict

If you're a Cyclops supporter or a Cyclops hater, you're going to dig this issue. Cyclops may have formed a powerful new squad but the new and improved Mr. Sinister gives the team a great new challenge. Some of the members are used in ways to give a new appreciation while others don't get a proper chance to show us what they can do. Kieron Gillen gives a lot of variety with his writing. We have intense situations with enough humor squeezed in to bring a smile to your face. Sinister's new look is great but I have to wonder how long this incarnation can last. He's proving to be a formidable foe but we have to assume he'll be defeated in the end of the arc. I'll remain hopefully that the X-Men will be able to save the day and Sinister can slink off without losing his new direction. If this new Mr. Sinister isn't enough to keep you hooked, the way the issue ends along with the coming of the Celestials should be plenty to keep you on board for this relaunch.

I don't know. I think this is a reasonable new take on Sinister's character and motives, but for such an exposition, the book didn't do a great job of making it believable or dramatic. I think both the art, and often the dialogue feel like they're going through the motions, and that's not something you can afford when you're trying to plug a "regenisis". Above all, the art is not dynamic or exciting. There is so much open space and such a consistently placid and airy palette. I think the colorists are doing the most damage, though Pacheco's compositions and resistance to any kind of dramatic lighting or shading are also rather damning. I like the idea of a more Victorian Sinister, and if done well, I can embrace his new mission statement (even if I find it a boring cliche compared to his previous villainous roles) if it is backed with good writing and character dialogue. I really like the idea of Cyclops leading a team of reformed villains that could take out a Thorless Avengers a few times over, dealing with cosmic level threats. This could be a great book, but for me, it is failing in execution.

I thoroughly enjoyed this issue, and am looking forward to the next. Sinister's plan is so classically evil that you can't help but enjoy yourself as he gushes about his own egomania.

I loved Sinister's banter with Emma, very witty. Can't wait to see how Cyclops and company deal with both Sinister AND the Celestials.

Not perfect but like most of Gillen's Uncanny work I enjoyed this issue. Still wish the art was better but for right now the writing is doing enough for me. I LOVE Gillen's take on Sinister and am happy with the motivations he's come up with for Sinister's actions. In the past he was always interested in Scott/Jean because...ummm he's evil?! Science?! Gillen's explanation in this issue really puts all of his various past actions into perspective and gives them a utilitarian bent. It makes total sense that Nathaniel Essex, the man who was so dedicated/possessed with his work that he effectively sold his soul to Apocalypse to dedicate further life times to it's pursuit would have this as an endgame. There were also some great philosophical undertones that permeated this issue. He's not quite Jonathan Hickman, but he does a good job of tackling nature vs nurture without being too on the nose with it. On top of that I'm a sucker for Kirby's creations, so the Celestials being in this book and playing a larger role in this arc definitely have me on board for at least the end of this story. After the lackluster Fear Itself stuff and the debacle that was UXM 544 I was ready to jump off of UXM for good, glad Gillen's returned to form on this book again. Now that he's free to do his thing I thing Uncanny can finally be the topnotch flagship it ought to be. Now if only we can get a topnotch artists on this book...

Sorry but i think this hands down one of the best marvel books out. I don't see why this didn't get 5stars. This whole sinister angle is great, wonder how this one gonna turn out.

Is it weird I'm picking this series up because I hate Scott? Wolverine and the X-Men is better, in my opinion but I have to get this one to get the "full" experience and hope to see Scott fail.

I won't lie, I had some big doubts about this series. I really didn't quite think the team would work and also just had some major mixed feelings about colossus/juggs. My doubts got even bigger when the only store in my town that sells comics didn't have the number one issue, so I took it as a sign of not to get it. Yet, my curiosity got the best of me and I ordered the number one and then picked this up today, and to be honest I'm glad I did, it really shocked me as to how much I enjoyed it, the writing is great and really makes me want keep up with this one and even though I had the doubts of my favorite character colossus and his new powers not seeming like it would work, I'm actually starting to like the new look and change, hopefully it will help his character, and hopefully we get some more on his development in future issues. Didn't think I would be saying this when this was first announced, but I highly recommend this one.

Won't happen. Kieron Gillen knows what he's doing. Stick to WatXM if you want fanwank garbage by a writer with no integrity.

The only thing I sense is some of the other team members don't 100% trust him

Maybe Im looking to deep but I see Emma not seeing eye to eye with him I see a falling out comming

I like this book much better than Wolverines X-men

2. Don't make ridiculous battles involving Bane.
3. Don't talk about Cyclops hate in front of FadeToBlackBolt.

I agree with 95% your sentiment if not the way you put it. (I think I woulda been a litttttle nicer but meh. You said it not me. Also I cannot make any claims as to the integrity of the writer of WatXM as after 2 issues I have decided to avoid it like the plague.)

Convinced. Silenced.
