Red Lanterns #6 - All Too Human

2

Jack Moore comes face-to-face with his new life as a Red Lantern. Atrocitus squares off against Bleez.

Jack Moore, after 5 issues of set-up, is finally a Red Lantern.

The Good

I love the fact that there is finally a Red Lantern from Earth. Jack is a pretty cool character and gone through a lot of hardships, and he really fits the Red Lantern role well. Plus, his hair is on "blood-fire," and I think that's one very cool design concept.

The Red Lanterns are finally coming together as a team of sorts. Prior to this, they were basically all lone wolves with the same colors. Now they're slowly becoming a force. I want to see how this plays out.

The Bad

What's going on here? I thought this series started off pretty strong, but in the past three issues, it's just been circling down the drain. Is it possible that the Red Lanterns can't hold their own as a book? This was a tough read to get through, and it's mainly because of one reason: Ed Benes a chunk of this issue, and it's painfully obvious. I don't know the story behind this, but what I do know is that I want consistency in my art, and the difference between Benes and fill-in artist Diego Bernard is night and day. It looks bad.

We're six issues in, and it feels like nothing has progressed. Sure, Jack is a Red Lantern now, but that's it, and that felt like it took way too long to set up. What little story Red Lanterns has to offer is falling extremely flat for me, which really sucks considering how excited I was for this book because of the creative team.

Other than me, who shouts "taser!" while they're tasering someone? (I've never tasered anyone, but I'm pretty sure I'd yell it out)

The Verdict

Man oh man... This book is taking a turn for the worse. This is a great creative team and some great new DC characters, but something is not working, and I'm not sure how much longer this can last. I really like the Jack Moore character and seeing the team slowly start to come together, but I couldn't stand the fact there was a fill-in artist whose art did not mesh well with Benes. This book really isn't going anywhere and I'm getting a bit bored. I do not recommend this issue.

But in all seriousness, you were much nicer than I was :)

Also about the fire hair... http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_xnlI52MhIs/Tg22-ielb3I/AAAAAAAABzo/CzOVBpFrJZU/s1600/hades.jpg ?? no?

As much as I wanted to slip into nerd rage, there are genuinely a few elements that I really like that have the potential to make a great book. That being said, this may be the last time I read this book on my own, unless I have to review it.

This is what I said on GTL's review.

I read the first two issues and just couldn't justify purchasing it any more. I want to read comics that bring something new to the table each issue and comics that when I get to the end of an issue, I can't wait to read the next one.

I'm a Lantern fan. I like the mythology and I know that some long time fans have issues with the Geoffcons, but I'm not a long time fan and I don't. I had hopes for this series and I wanted to support something that was a little different. Unfortunately this just seemed to fall flat at every turn.

Yeah, I get what you mean. It is nice that they are fleshing out a Lantern Corps that is not Green or Yellow. But I think there is a fundamental flaw with Red Lanterns. That they are either enraged and therefore have little to offer in the way of character, or completely self-aware but then no longer really enraged. Having Atrocitus as a free thinking leader worked very well when he was first introduced, because he was a bit of a hypocrite and was sometimes led by selfishness rather than rage.

So the way I see it is, we can either have Atrocitus leading a pack of characterless-beings on his own moral conquest, which defeats the idea of it being a "Corps" book. Or we can have a actual realized Corps, with lots of different characters - but then no real reason to be Red Lanterns and have anything to do with the Corps.

You are right though, there is potential there, but these latest issues just feel like they keep writing themselves further and further into a corner.

read the first two issues and just couldn't justify purchasing it any more.

Oh, well issues #3-#6 are basically issue #2 rehashed four times. So you didn't miss out on much! I think I was still hopeful around #2 that the series would take off!!

It's like you said, they just can't hold a series, I mean you can only take rage so far before it becomes one dimensional

Jack isn't the first Red Lantern from Earth - you're forgetting the best RL of all - Dex-Starr.

The should change it from rage driven to violence driven by rage because they would be able to develop characters more

YES! Dex-Starr is perhaps the greatest Red Lantern of them all. So adorable. So deadly.

I actually think the series is getting better for the simple fact of the new human character.
I haven't like this book or what they have been doing to the Red Lanterns at all except for the backup story of Rancor.

It's funny because like most people I was reluctant to accept another human lantern but he is turning oout to be the only interesting thing about the book.

P.S. More Dex-Starr!!

@Green_Tea_Light:

Hey, I was reading Green Lantern:New Guardians latest issue and wondered about Bleez. I don't read the Red Lantern series. In the Green Lantern:New Guardians issue 5, we see a quarrel between Bleez and Atrocitus. Atrocitus says, "Behold the blood ocean of Ysmault" and dumps Bleez's head in the pit. Is Bleez dead?

No, that scene tells us it is before issue 3 of Red Lanterns, and she is alive throughout the series.

In the Red Lantern series Atrocitus believes that by putting Red Lanterns in the Blood Ocean he can give them back their intellect and free will - and it works - allowing him to have equals in the Corps who will be able to question his logic and be more capable of carrying out his will. Issue #3 of Red Lanterns starts straight away with Bleez being submerged in the Blood Ocean.

The only thing which I find slightly weird, is that in the Red Lanterns series he mentions nothing about what is occurring in New Guardians, and he has a completely different set of motives (which often make no sense) for putting Bleez in the Blood Ocean.

But, as far I am aware - that is what has happened.

Is it just me or was Atrocitus' design back before New 52 much better? I've not liked his interpretations in either cartoon or New 52. Not sure why they are trying to make him more and more human looking.

I think I like this series a lot more than most, but Jack Moore's story just is not connecting with me at all. Geoff Johns was able to conjure up more justification and emotion for Dex-Star in just a few pages than Milligan has done for Moore in 6 issues. As I said, I really enjoy this series, but I am not feeling this character. Is it bad that I hope Atricitous snaps his neck in a single panel? :)

@wolfmangideon: the best!? aha no. attrocitus bleez or vice.

dexstarr sucks.. he just a cat who spits like the rest of the lanterns. vice had a juge part in blackest night for green lantern corps and emerald eclipse. attrocitus has more back story and bleeze is comming up. dexxstarr is lame. he's probably just put in their for humor falue. kinda like how japanese put cute characters in anime for fangirls and stuff

I'm sticking it out. I just started reading the GL books with the New 52, so I have nothing to compare it to. I am reading my way through the trades now (currently on Wanted: Hal Jordan), so please no spoilers, but how prominent a role does the Red Lanterns play?

I want more Dex-star that cat rules. As for the rest of the book I have been rely enjoying it it is the first thing I read on the weeks when it comes out there has been lots of development in the comic I like the learning the Red Lanterns back stories when they are throne in the blood sea and to be honest this new human Red Lantern is the lamest part of the book so far.

I don't agree with the reviewer. To me this is more of a forshawoding issue, maybe earths red lantern can help atrocitus (Sp?) over come his worries about a RL revolt, and/or become his number two and stop bleez. THeres been a theme in the Lantern books the leaders are either saying screw you to there corps or the corps is saying screw you to the leader. IDK if this is leading into a big event but I'm going to stick around for as long as this book is out. Oh one thing though CHANGE the art, there was a flashback i guess you could say in GL: new guardians #5 showing artocitus throwing bleez into the blood ocean, yes it happen already and in realty is was a waste of a panle but man that art blew me away I never liked the art on RL's it is to gridy if that makes since. Also an idea for off my mind does the blood ocean have salt in it since it's called an ocean?

lol.

The Red Lanterns can't carry their own series. Whether or not it will eventually be canceled is the question. (If it keeps on this pace, I'm saying issue 20 at most)

The whole series has been nothing special so far. I love the concept and creative team, but this book disappoints me more and more each month. New Guardians has a inferior creative team and concept, and that book is solid, why can't this one be?

The best thing they can do with this book is call it The Spectre and change all the characters.
