Note: There are some spoilers in the recap and review

Recap

On this week's episode of Gotham, Fish is still being held in captivity. She rounds up the troops for some water. Barbara heads back to her place, drunk, to find Ivy and Selina hanging out there. She finds out that Jim left his keys there.

Meanwhile, Jim and Leslie enjoy a trapeze act at the local circus. It's the Flying Graysons. A clown gets out of a clown car and beats one of them. Jim gets up and using his power of the law to stop it.

Penguin's mother is the new singing talent at the club and no one seems to be enjoying it. One man boos loudly and Penguin makes him regret it. Back at the circus, Gordon confronts the man who attacked the Graysons. Apparently, the Graysons and Lloyds don't get along.

Gordon looks for the snake dancer and the son, Jerome talks to Gordon. Jerome thinks something is wrong since she didn't take anything with her. Gordon wants to let her snake go to help find Layla, his mother. The snake leads him to a dead body, Jerome's mother. Apparently, the ringmaster knew.

Fish rallies the troops and says they need to stand up because they're being used as spare parts for transplants.

Gordon brings in a bunch of performers into the station to find out who killed Layla. He talks to Jerome about who Layla was and if she had enemies. He finds that one Grayson and one Lloyd both shared a bed with her. Jerome speaks incredibly maturely about his mother. Bullock and Gordon learn that the Lloyds and Graysons are feuding over a stolen horse from the early 1900s.

Fish has everyone prepared. Some men enter with guns and asks someone to raise their hand and step forward. Fish takes control and says they need to talk. Fish says things need to change. She says she won't give up the man they need unless they get food and water and if she doesn't get it, she'll kill the man. The other inmates start pummeling the guy until he is dead. Fish demands the manager to come down.

Nymga comes in and talks to Essen, Gordon, and Thompkins and they come to the conclusion that one of the two families involved were off doing other things. A psychic comes in and says Layla sent him a message from the other side.

James and Leslie head to under a bridge and find a bloody ax from the Hellfire Club. Back at the GCPD, Gordon is mad their date turned into a crime investigation. They make up and bring in Mr Cicero, the psychic. Gordon explains they found a hatchet and Cicero is now an accessory to murder. Gordon says he's protecting someone. Gordon brings in Jerome, and he sits next to Jerome. Gordon says Jerome killed his mother. Cicero admits he is Jerome's father. Jerome has a turn and gets all creepy and admits he killed his mother then has a laugh.

Thompkins and Gordon share a kiss and Barbara walks in on them at GCPD.

Victor walks into the club and Butch follows, Penguin is all freaked out. Butch works for Zsasz now and Victor says Butch now works for Penguin.

At the Wayne Manor, Bruce is all dressed up and heads to Wayne Enterprises to sit at the head of the table. Bruce has questions for the board. He asks some serious questions and the board seems to brush him off.

Thoughts

I really thought the Ringmaster was played by Jordan Peele in the first shot of him. It wasn't and I was a little disappointed. In addition, the psychic, Cicero, played Felix Faust on Constantine. That was pretty awesome to see. The purple hat was a bit hitting the audience over the head though.

We have a completely different Fish Mooney here. She's like a real character now not in this weird overacting world. Again, I actually like the over-the-top version, but this version of Fish is insanely different, but in a good way. Her new role and story are both frustrating and interesting. I don't like the idea she was just randomly kidnapped. It seems too convenient and like they needed to do something with the character but didn't want her to leave Gotham.

How is Barbara fine with these two girls staying at her place? Much like last week with Gordon fine with them being there, apparently, people living at your place is a totally normal thing in Gotham that results with characters being completely cool with it.

Leslie Thompkins is a scientist who not only entertains the idea of psychics but seems to believe in it. She says there are things outside of science we don't understand pretty much saying "supernatural things exist because science can't explain everything." Look, I know we're in Gotham and all, but that really bugs me.

As much as I despise the idea of Gotham flatout over-promoting the idea that Joker is in this episode, it was handled decently. Cameron Mondaghan was simply brilliant in the role as Jerome and easily had the performance of the episode. You could even say it was chilling at moments, when he showed his true nature. Who would have thought that what I was looking forward to the least was the best part of the episode.

"If we have a son, we'll name him Gordon." Nope, you're going to name him "Dick." Enough Gotham, stop doing these not so subtle nods at the audience. We get it, the parents of Dick Grayson are getting married. We're not idiots and frankly, we don't even need to see that. It adds nothing to show.

Setting aside the idea that this show loves shoehorning in as much comic book stuff as possible to please fans, which tends to boggle the show up, this was a better episode than the last few, but it was a tad boring. It's a step up in the fact that it wasn't bad, and most of the characters had some sort of purpose here, for the most part, even though Barbara is one of the worst written characters not only on this show but in all of comic book television. Hopefully, the show can get some direction back in the next week or so, since this season is coming to a close.

@madeinbangladesh: I believe he said in the review above that he was the highlight. His assessment of the Joker part of the episode I actually am pretty much in agreement with. They shouldn't have spoiled it, but it was well done (and disturbing).

Concerning the Graysons, I think he was overreacting personally. The episode takes place at Hayley's Circus, why not show younger versions of Dick's parents? I don't really see it as a big deal. That said, I'd probably like it more if they showed up for more than one episode, since, the more appearances they have, ideally the more of an impact they'll make, which in turn would make their inevitable deaths more tragic. Basically, give them more to do than just being Dick Grayson's dead parents. Probably won't happen though.

Would have liked it more if Jerome hadn't been caught. Would have upped the creepy factor if he had been smart enough to escape being caught.

Showing them is fine, but that last moment where they were forced into the episode was pointless.

While, as a comic fan I don't want to have a Joker back-story, my wife loved that part. As she put it "We have Riddler and Penguin and all those guys in the beginning stages, so I wanted to see the Joker." She doesn't care that his background is a mystery in the comics, she wanted to see pre-Joker, Joker. I have a feeling the General Audience liked that much more than the comic fans. What bothered me the most here was Gordon's "Detective Work"..he simply says "Blind guy staged the axe-thing, that means he's Jerome's Dad because Jerome killed his mom" Wait?? How did he deduce that? Did I miss something? Sounded like he simply guessed, and lo and behold, guessed right. Edit add on: We're all jumping the gun by saying Jerome is "Pre-Joker", yeah the promotions make it seem that way, and I kind of assume he is, (the laugh and all) but as of right now, we don't 100% know that.

I thought it was a decent episode. I agree it got boring in a few spots. And I totally thought that was Jordan Peele playing the ringmaster also, and then when I seen it wasn't him I was so disappointed.

Dr. Leslie Thompkins has some serious eye brow game.... Mesmerizing.....

Did anyone groan outloud when the 3 worst characters in the whole series were in the same room? Did anyone groan when it became apparent the trio will be staying in the same room? Ugh...... Those 3 single handily make this show a tier below what it could be.

*Cat, Ivy and Barbara is who I am referring too btw

I felt like this episode highlighted everything that is wrong with Gotham. It was hard for me to even take tonight's episode seriously. Comic book references are great, yet this show seems to always find a way to make them ridiculous. They teased Joker in the preview for the show last week instead of just letting it play out and maybe surprising some people. Wouldn't the Jerome turn have been SO much more exciting if we all didn't see it coming a mile away? It's like they think they HAVE to have some sort of easter egg in every scene and they think they're being subtle when they're being everything but. Even the name Jerome......Starts with a "J" like in Joker. And if you scramble all the letters in his name (J-E-R-O-M-E), re-arrange them, drop one "e" and add a "K" you get: J O (k) E R. Hell, you can even spell MR. J. The only thing missing were the playing cards falling out of his pocket smh. Barbara continues to not only be the worst written character on the show but in all of TV! I've liked some episodes and I do like Bullock and Gordon's dynamic, but I feel like the show is making it's living off all these little nods to Batman characters (Like Scarecrow the last 2 weeks) yet they're all just a big tease since most will never amount to anything except being some sort of sloppy origin story. Sorry for the rant.

More references the better, IMO. Sure, there'll be a point where it's too much- but, I don't think the Graysons did that.

I 've never understood the Barbara hate.....so because she's written as a stressed out, not well adjusted woman who doesnt know what she wants in life makes her a bad character...? Uh you do remember that she eventually leaves Jim a single father right? Seems 3 dimensional and real to me and good ground work if thats what their building for.

And personally i found Bruce to be more annoying then the Grayson's....i'd just like a flashback so we can see if this kid was this ridiculously competent before his parents death. Because even though the psychosis of having them killed in front of you might make you obsessive, it doesn't make you the best detective in gotham at 12.

This show is not created nor written for people like us, its frankly meant to troll people like us, it's meant for people who have some knowledge of Batman (which is for them rooted in the movies and cartoons) and are too stupid to realize that the writers dangle invisible carrots in front of them for 5,6,7 seasons with no pay off.

This show will only be popular as long as it takes the audience at large (again not us/ not you reading this) to realize that you'll never see Bruce in costume...The show is at best a mediocre procedural cop drama with a mild Batman coat of paint that without the Batman stuff would have been cancelled long ago. The show needs to be less villain of the week and way more serialized, and fire Jada Pinkett Smith.

I am at a 2 for this episode. A part of me wants to go as low as 1 but this show isn't straight up bad. The cinematography is frequently good, the sets look cool, and a couple of the actors do a great job. Still, this episode was another in a long line this season that really feels like the studio has more say in how this show is being written and produced than the ones actually doing it. "Romeo and Juliet" aka John and Mary Grayson added literally nothing to the narrative that couldn't have been accomplished through Gordon actually doing detective work for the first time on this show. I don't like Fish. I was fine with her to start out but her character has gotten on my nerves. I'm also not at all fond of her subplot right now. I have liked Thompkins until this episode. She was being pretty dense. I'm not sure what the writers were trying to prove with her. Barbara, Ivy, and Selena have been three characters I have consistently taken issue with but this episode threw them together for triple the eye-rolling for the price of one. Every scene with them was just cringe on top of cringe.

Now, I need to talk about The Joker. His inclusion really bothers me. Just like all the other major villains that are thrown in so the studio can hype up their appearance to get continual ratings boosts. There isn't a good reason for him to be here. As for the actual portrayal, I think the kid did a decent job with the material he was given. His Joker laugh is pretty spot on. I don't take issue with the actor at all but I do think the material was not great. This kid killed his mother over nagging him about dishes. There was more to it than that but in the vein of origin stories (which I don't want Joker to even have), this one was weak.

After all that negativity, I do want to talk about the one part I absolutely loved about this episode. Bruce Wayne confronting the Wayne Industries Board about their corruption and ultimately threatening them was absolutely fantastic. I feel like their portrayal of a young Bruce Wayne has been fantastic all season. It's just unfortunate that the one part I loved about the episode was only a few minutes of it.

I know I have been more and more negative with this show lately but I truly had high hopes after the first handful of episodes. I just can't say it has lived up to those hopes at all. I love Batman and the characters that populate Gotham City but this show is just not working for me. If you find enjoyment in it then I'm happy for you. I just can't. I'm committed to finishing the season but I'll probably only try the first couple episodes of season 2 before I decide to drop it or not. I hope the show can win me back over.

This show quality wise is not better than Constantine. Actually it is worse in alot of aspects. A show like Constantine is on the ropes simply because it lacks the name recognition Gotham has.

I saw 3 stars and was getting ready to Rabble-Rouse, until I read the review. completely agree. The Pseudo-Joker was great. Whether he is or isn't (maybe exposed to Joker gas) it was done well. And your negatives were spot on. 1 hr Actionless, no Matter how good storytelling, will get boring on tv. And seriously, "We will name him Gordon", means ZILCH to viewers not in the DC know, and to us in the know, just seeing them getting Married was all the inference we needed.

Next ep looks like it has action though. And we will ALL be waiting to see if they show just who is under that MASK at the end.

Again, I must disagree with Elfring on the review for Gotham. I thought the episode was very FUN and and did a good job with bringing NEW people on board. These characters are complex and have decades of writing behind them. The point of the show is to present them completely new and to have some fun with it along the way. Comic fans should enjoy the show, and that new people are coming to love these characters as well. Also, Joker kid was fantastic. THAT LAUGH.

I got to accept "boring parts" as part of everyone's life. If people viewed our lives they would find a lot boring parts also (if not the majority of it). If our lives were one big adventure after another, like in the comics, we'd be burned out.

I can't stand when comic readers are snobs. This show is on FOX and they have to placate to the masses and the avg. audience, not "us" comic readers. While there needs to be a balance to ensure that the comic reader also satisfied, "we" do not make up the masses. So references and not so subtle hints or back drops to a character or story are necessary. If you want them to just placate to the comic reader, then the show would not make it. I know many non-comic readers that watch these shows and among "them" when the conversation ensues, it there is never a gripe about those little things, but about the overall entertainment of the show and storyline.

How is it this show, a show that from I see has gotten shit on by multiple people, was greenlit for a 2nd season midway through its still current 1st season, yet a highly acclaimed show like Constantine got hung out to dry? I saw someone review an episode of Gotham saying that even a decent episode of it isn't shit compared to a mediocre episode of Constantine.

@hiimsmart: I happen to like Gotham. Nevertheless, I think the issue with Constantine, which I also really like a lot is that it is on Friday and there are too many shows that are based on supernatural events. e.g. Grimm and Sleepy Hollow, which I believe has saturated that genre. But that is just my opinion.

Fish Mooney's story is ridiculous. The way she sacrificed one of her 'family' members because she knew the guards needed him alive. If they needed him alive why not refuse to comply and let them forcibly take him, giving themselves an opportunity to attack the guards. Or even more straight forward just charge them headon.

And that aside it was incredibly cruel to have him literally beaten to death while they could've easily just snapped his neck.

First things first, I loooooooved Joker Jerome. Joker, like Hannibal Lector are so scary its even scarier not knowing how they came to be. This kid (Ian from Shameless) was making jokes about his sad broken mentality! I, like Leslie was terrified and mesmerized by all the potentially horrible things he could justify. A+ team and I was fully planning a hatefest.

They could put Barbara in a bikini and I'll still hate her.

To Mat, maybe you should let someone else review this show because its obvious you don't enjoy Gotham. All of the Easter eggs are for us nerds. They are highlights that you always hate. I come to this site to geek out, not bitch about cinematography or other irrelevant cra like most users. Last nights episode was simply one of the best this season had to offer. Especially Fish's comeback.

I really like Gotham. Its the best DC show on TV, much better than Arrow and Flash, which are totally flat in characters and plots and everything looks like jumped out of a teenage fashion Magazine. Gotham has much better characters and plots and its styled, but not overstyled.

This episode was great. I love all the characters, with the exception of Barbara - Gordons ex-girlfriend. She's portayed totally inconsistent and implausible. But I can't imagine thats not intended ... so I'm really keen to see what her role will be.

I have different feelings for the series. The part of the Penguin and Fish Mooney are good, they are what call my attention and keep me watching the series week after week.

But the Gordon's part... they really mixed everything up, and it's got nothing to do with the comics.

1. I can't see Barbara Kean as the future James's wife and mother of Barbara and James Junior.

2. Barbara is Bisexual and is having an affair with Rene Montoya??

3. James is dating Leslie Thompkins... what??? she is supposed to be helping Bruce to get over with his loss.

4. James is supposed to date with Sara Hessen.

5. James Gordon should have been arrived in Gotham years later.

There's a difference between being the "best DC show" on TV vs being YOUR "favorite DC show". Gotham is not better quality wise than Arrow and sure as hell not better quality wise than Flash. It's not even close. Flash and Arrow has better all around characters with depth to each and every one of them. Far far Better writing. an constantly evolving status quo every episode. The only thing that is CONSISTENTLY dynamic in Gotham is the power struggle of the gangs.

I can name 3 characters in Gotham that are outright simply written bad. Cat, Ivy and Barbara. Contradicting themselves. Being irrational without any real reason. I can't name a single character with some type of consistent inner depth. Every character is like an open book. Falcone (and somewhat Bruce) is the only one who imo, has changed as a character over the course of the season. The story line surrounding Gordon's fight against corruption(main plot) is overshadowed by mere side plots. Penguin story > Every other story. It's villain of the week structure is STILL on-going. The comicbook nods are over-the-top. Arrow and Flash are much more subtle. It's called an Easter Egg because you are suppose to find it. Gotham gift wraps that Easter egg and gives it to you in a basket with neon lights covering pointing to it.

Gotham is EXTREMELY enjoyable to me. But I'm not stupid or blind to it's issues.

@truemarvel:

First, its true that Gotham is my favorite DC show in terms of personal taste.

But second, its also better in terms of other criteria, more professional one. All three shows (Flash, Arrow and Gotham) are very well-made on a technical level, but they all are not really in the same league like high quality TV shows like Game of Thrones, Vikings, Justified, Sons of Anarchy, Deadwood, Bored to Death or Battlestar Galactica (just a selection).

Both Arrow and Flash are "Smallville success formula shows" ... just with a few adaptations. The plots are very flat, the dialogues are often mindless, without any real content and everything is totally overstyled. Both shows are teenage Fashion magazined on TV. The soap opera part is very big when it comes to built the relationships between the characters. Arrow is for the grown up teenage fans of Smallville, Flash is for teenagers. Both are a mix of Beverly Hills 90210 for grown ups and a more serious styled Dark Knight look and feel - the outcome is a "Twilight-like shallow superhero soap opera" with really predictable plots and not so interesting characters (at least if one has already puberty left behind). And the Eastereggs ... just hints for comic book nerds, but the story is always pretty empty and predictable.

Gotham of course is also a comic based TV show and therefore plots and characters are also highly stylized. Of course it also aims for a young audience, but the setting and most of all the main characters are not that shallow and not just Barbie and Ken in a superhero TV show scenario (like definitely Arrow and Flash are). Gordon, Bullock, Nigma, Penguin, Alfred, Bruce and the mafia characters are so far well established and they develop well. Cat and Ivy aren't really main characters so far, their development will come. Just Barbara doesn't fit for me ... she's so far very inconsistent. But we'll see ...

Of course, Gotham is perfectly styled and there are some unrealistic, comic book style settings ... but the show is not totally overstyled, the characters are not totally cliche and the plots are more interesting and not always that stereotypical and predictable assembly line Production like Arrow and Flash.

So Gotham is in terms of some quality criteria and not just personal taste slightly better (written) than Arrow and Flash.

And when it comes to personal taste: I personally can't stand a whole episode of Arrow (out since the first episodes of season 2, but now and then watching - because friends tell me, its getting better ... but its not) or Flash (after 4 episodes of snoozefest i knew its Arrow for toddlers) without getting bored and annoyed by such shallow characters and the stupidity of the plots. Always the same ...

So Arrow and Flash is in no way enjoyable to me, because i'm not blind to its issues. Gotham so far is very enjoyable to me, though i'm not blind to its issues.

I agree: they really mixed up much, but not everything ... its different, but wouldn't say it has nothing to do with the comic. Its just based on ...

1. totally agree ... its hard to imagine. But since its at least 10 to 15 years in the past, the show has much space for development here. I'm thrilled to see the development of Barbara, a long way to go...

3. Same for Leslie ... I love the relationship with Gordon, because again there are so much room for development.

Of course the timeline in the TV show has to be adapted. I also always start counting years when a character appears. The Penguin and The Riddler for example are about 10 years older than Batman, but I'm ok with that. Therefore I hope they will not introduce some characters too early. Don't think Jerome was the Joker ... he would have appeared to early and honestly I don't want him to appear ever. The Joker came out of nothing and I see him the same age as Batman.

Moreover I really love the development of the Penguin and its the great opportunity of this show to focus on other villains than the Joker!

Also the "awakening" of Bruce's skills are a great plot line ... I'm really going forward to see how he's getting control over Wayne Enterprise ... and for sure there will appear some new villains and Bruce will train strategy and fighting unfair! I'd love to see that ...

Funny side effect: Selina is same age or even 2 years older than Bruce ... so far I've seen her always not much, but a bit younger. But I like that scenario. It fits. But I hope ... same as with the Joker ... the showrunner and writers will resist the temptation to get Selina too much involved with Bruce too early. For my feeling they should cross ways later as Batman and Catwoman.

@frobin: you're right, but i think they've move away too much from the original source in some aspect, specially when they're well-known characters. For instance, Arrow is completely different from the comics but it's first time something likes this is done with that character

Anyway, I'll get used to it, it happens all the time in every interpretation of the franchise XD.

Come on, Jerome isn't the Joker. They are just making him seem like it to mess with our heads. I mean, he can't be, right? Right?!

Seriously though, I think it would be much better for the Joker not to be introduced yet. Let's just throw us a couple more dead ends, to keep things interesting. Not that I mind the Joker having an origin story (I'm not so tied up in the Alan Moore version as most fans seem to be) but I would just like to keep guessing and imagining who could become the Joker.
