Death of Wolverine #1 - The End

5

Wolverine's not dead yet. But after reading this issue, he's getting a lot closer.

DEATH OF WOLVERINE #1 is on sale 9/3/14.

The Good

It feels like Wolverine's been about to die for quite some time. It was back in 2013 when the seeds were being planted about Wolverine being Killable. In his recent series, we've seen a countdown to the end. But there's still a little time left.

Charles Soule has come in to, most likely, finally put an end to Logan. While we've known that Wolverine lost his healing factor and could be killed, it felt like a lot of aspects of his condition were simply not being addressed. Most of Wolverine's appearances focused more on the fact that he could be injured versus what the lack of a healing factor means for his body. There's also the fact that if word gets out Wolverine has lost the advantage of being able to heal from wounds, his life is going to get even more difficult. It's great to see more being aspects of his condition being looked at.

Soule starts out this series with an immediate somber tone. Steve McNiven's art is perfect here. You can almost feel what Logan is going through. McNiven has the ability to make everything feel like it's on a bigger scale. How many times have we seen comic book deaths turn into events? Regardless of knowing that Logan is meant to die and that we've seen so many deaths later somehow overturned, Soule and McNiven are making it feel like it's going to matter in this story. The story is also a pretty good jumping on point. You really don't need to know what he's been up to in the past year.

The issue is also basically a Director's Cut without being billed as one. We may have a regular-sized story, we also get nine pages of page and story sketches with commentary by McNiven. If that wasn't enough, there's also a five-page interview with Wolverine creator Len Wein. If you're wondering what he thinks about the death of the character after forty years and other aspects to the creation of Wolverine, you won't want to miss it. There's even ten pages of script-to-panel.

The Bad

There might be some that might not want the bonus material. Readers might not have a choice in paying an extra dollar for the material, but hopefully they'll appreciate it.

There might be some difficulty in accepting that Wolverine is really going to die or stay dead. Focusing too much on that could hamper your enjoyment of the actual story.

The Verdict

Wolverine made his first appearance forty years ago and now it's time for him to die. We've been reading about his coming death month after month but this final story arc starts off with a bang. Charles Soule immediately sets the perfect tone for the series and brings to light some aspects of Wolverine's condition that weren't given much attention. The story is presented in a way that newer readers can easily dive into the issue. Steve McNiven's art brings up the energy of the story, giving it an even bigger feel. Knowing that the end is finally in sight, you can't help but feel the excitement and anticipation thanks to Soule and McNiven. It should be obvious--this is a Wolverine story that should not be missed.

The bartender was the most badass character.

"American Dream my ass. This is Canada!" made me chuckle.

But wait, isn't Nuke supposed to be dead?

I mean, this Nuke was like a robot but they made no mention of it.

Woah, looks like the hype around Charles Soule and his story crafting abilities are justified if he can take utter abomination of a story line Cornell left him with and turn it into something worth following. I'd have to agree with you in that I'm not even that bothered by no appearances of the powers or the martial ability. I just want to be able to read a Wolverine story that doesn't make my eyes want to bleed........

Martial ability, ferocity and, what's more, fighting smarts aplenty.

Reminds folks why Wolverine is to be feared.

Slight spoiler: Reed comments that Wolverine still has his speed and his strength ... And that if the latter weren't superhuman, Logan wouldn't even be able to move with all the metal bonded to his infrastructure. Always fun to get more nourishment with regards Logan's superhuman status for all the as yet existent naysayers.

Ok. Having just read the issue ... I've got just one damn thing to say;

He's baaack!!!!

Not worried if the powers that be feel he needs to be shelved for a year or two. As long as it means we get quality stories like these, and the character gets reinvigorated, I'm all for it.

Doubly so if Marvel guarantees to keep the character out of writer's hands like Cornell.

Cornell, take note, this is how you write a damn Wolverine story. May you never touch another Wolverine book again.

Amen.

Great issue. The past wolverine series was mediocre in both art and story imo. This first issue was excellent totally agree with the review. I will miss Wolverine but at least were getting a great story out of it. So far.

Like the other big event book this week (Original Sin), this seems untethered from what's going on in the rest of the line. Nuke blew up real good and definitively in Captain America just a few months ago, and Mystique was running Madripoor in Wolverine and Avengers Undercover (assuming it's not still being flown around on the head of a giant dragon... sigh).

Pretty art, though.

Great issue, art was solid. Didn't like the fact I paid $5 for a bunch of extra bonus material that is as usual pretty boring.

This book has a lot of things I liked. The first page reading "The End" was a nice touch.

The conversation with Logan and Reed was really good. It's not super often you get to see Reed characterized so well. I really liked how he stressed that the world needs Logan to do the things that need to be done. I always loved Reed's "what's necessary" way of looking at things.

The art in this book is amazing and the way they showed Logan's instinct thoughts by putting things he sense in yellow, things he smells in blue, and thinks that hurt in red was really great.

I wasn't expecting the main villain to be Viper. Mystique was the one who owns/runs Madripoor now.

It's a shame this is Wolverine's Death since Charles Soule writing Wolverine actually works amazingly. It's the first thing he's done at Marvel I liked.

Read the first issue...I could not wait so I left during my lunch break to pick it up! It's good! I need to read it again! The first panel! You see it in his eyes...Logan is ready to close his eyes. McNiven nails it and Soule has started something really good! I hope he can keep the emotions going this strong through out the next three issues.

@krypton-115: I believe it's simply about a different focus. The death of Cap was very much "about" his sudden, shocking loss. The death of Wolverine is more "about" the process of his death, HOW he lives and dies, as opposed to what/who kills him.

I actually really don't want Wolverine's death.

*sigh*

Me neither, it's like putting down a dog that says "Bub" instead of barking.

(In all seriousness though I am kinda sad about this)

This 'event' sounds cool and all, but the one thing I hate right off the bat is that they just spoil the ending in the title. What happened to the Marvel that killed Captain America when we least expected it?

@benk111: True, but I still don't see Sony giving this series another reboot, when instead they could make a better profit from selling it after doing everything they can with it, and then focusing on other films. In any case it doesn't matter, they probably won't be around that long, which in the end is good news for us fans because it means Spidey will go back to Disney.

@benk111: That's one of the lowest grossing Spider-Man films to date (technically with inflation that's the lowest). Not to mention that in addition to the 200,000$ it cost to make, Sony spent a fortune on advertising. They actually paid to have Spider-Man on the ball drop at Time Square which cost a mint. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 severely under preformed compared to Sony's expectations. Not to mention the bad rep of this film means the next one will likely make less money (although Sony pushed it back far enough that some people may forget). Bottom line, the franchise is not doing as well as they thought it would, and for Sony that's bad news.

@benk111: It wouldn't work for Spidey, look at this reboot, a lot of people who liked the Raimi movies still won't see this version. Not to mention Sony plans on doing Sinister Six ans Black Cat films, which is already going too far. The fact is they can't reboot him again and expect to make any money. James Bond can work because he can go away for years and then come back, but Sony has to keep on making these films within a time limit, or they lose the license. Bottom line, they wanna squeeze him dry, and sell him back.

@benk111: My theory is that if they don't go bankrupt and still have Spider-Man after squeezing every last drop out of the franchise, they will sell it back to Disney.

however much money they'd make selling it they'd make more if they found a way to keep making spiderman movies, look at what mgm did with james bond

Hero deaths have become so overdone at this point. It's even worse when it's basically been advertised for nearly a year. I couldn't care less about this and have zero interest. I'm sure the marketing campaigns for his return will start by next summer.

hate to say it but fox is never going to let that happen, even if there movies start bombing they'll just keep rebooting it until they get it right. theres just to much potential money to be made with any x-men movie. same goes for spiderman with sony.

I know, I was just making a pun. Spider-man, will come back, Sony is going under and each Spider-Man movie makes less money then the last.

oh...still think sony will try to keep spiderman unless they go into bankruptcy.

can't find a writing willing do a story constructed by your over paid marketing team to maximise sales.

Hire Charlie "Yes Man" Soule!

I'm surprised they even let comicvine review it early a site for us comic book nerds. They only kill characters for mainstream press surely USAToday would of be the place they want to go. The are literally betting on idiots who don't buy comics rushing out to buy multiple copies because they think will be collectable.

@timotheus316: It actually is an issue. It was dealt with pretty quickly after he lost his Healing Factor, but it's a constant effect. Logan has to take these pills that Hank manufactured. I believe he has to take a daily dose to keep the Adamantium poisoning from killing him.

Yeah they said before when he lost his healing factor that the adamantium on his bones kills him slowly yet I've seen no mention of this in the past year. I hope Soule brings it to light since I've not seen a mention of it and I think it would be an important issue that needs addressing.

omg i hate you for making me read this early lol i couldnt help it

i seriously cant wait for Wednesday!

all though i dont want him to die, he has been one of my favorites since i was a kid in the early 90s watching the cartoon before school. He was the first character i was obsessed with, when i was in kindergarten id run around the house with straws clenched between each finger pretending i was wolvey, while my mother wondered where all the straws were. I've thoroughly enjoyed the last wolverine run and story and the 3 months to die arc, i have faith in Charles soule, he is a top writer in my opinion, i expect nothing more than an amazing emotional story and ending. I dont want it, but i know it will be amazing, so i cant wait.

As unlikely as it is. I would like for this to be the start of real deaths. Since Marvel is supposedly committing to the future Hickman made in Avengers, maybe it means the deaths that happen now will stick.

They promoted the Death of Wolverine and now I'm realizing that it lines up with Axis. Who ever was responsible for this should be fired and have their career ended. Imagine if they didn't do this gimmick and just made it sound like Wolverine would have a huge role in Axis and make it seem like he was the star of it, and then in like issue 3 or 6 he just ends up getting killed. It would have made the event better and his death would have been more shocking.

The straight razor comes out of the shadows at the end of the arc and finishes the job.
