The Good
Mikey and Brennan continue on their journey on their own. Mikey remembers the times they went camping, which aren't the same memories Brennan has. The two are confronted by a bear in the woods and must do anything they can to survive. Meanwhile, Aaron and Wendy, the boys' parents talk to each other about parenthood.
There is a specific moment that is incredibly shocking in this issue and makes the reader why Brennan isn't questioning Mikey more. Sure, the reader has a one-up on Brennan, since we all know that the God King Lore is using Mikey as a vessel (all hail God King Lore, by the way), but there's certain moments, especially here, where you just want to jump into the book and shake some sense into the characters.
That's what really makes this a fantastic book. The reader quickly connects and feels for these characters and wants the best for them. Usually, it takes a decent amount of time for the reader to feel this much attachment for anyone within a new series, but writer Joshua Williamson has a way of not only making these characters relatable, but also making them compelling, which can all be attributed with how the first issue of this series sets up the book.
Andrei Bressan and Adriano Lucas doing some amazing artwork on this issue. Near the opening of the book, Bressan and Lucas deliver two splash pages that are utterly fantastic. We get to see God King Lore, which is terrifying. The amount of detail within the art is amazing and the color palate for the piece just adds to the creepiness of the entire piece. As always, Bressan and Lucas deliver some top notch art that perfectly fits the series. There's no one else I'd rather see on BIRTHRIGHT.
The Bad
There's little to nothing to dislike about this book. It's fantastic, moves along incredibly well, and engages the reader. The only real thing you can say is while this is the start of a new story arc, this isn't a great place to jump on. Do yourself a favor and just pick up the first trade.
The Verdict
BIRTHRIGHT #6 is made up of a lot of little, memorable moments that add an incredible amount of depth to the characters and story. The art and colors on this book are outstanding and visually stunning, especially during key turning points here. The story, on the surface, may not seem to move forward too much, but that's because the focus is more on the characters and developing relationships between them. This is one of the better issues of BIRTHRIGHT, in a series of great issues thus far. I highly recommend checking this series out. You won't be disappointed.
