Avengers: The Children's Crusade #8 Review

5

Doctor Doom is reborn and has gained the Life Force, but will it overwhelm Doom and prove to be too much?

The Good

What isn't good about AVENGERS: CHILDREN'S CRUSADE? The series which started back in 2010 and has run it's course through 2011, released bi -monthly by Marvel is one comic that is always worth the wait. The book has finally reached a climax, and will prove to be the introduction to the upcoming Avengers vs. X-Men story arc -- something that is clear after reading this issue. It is in the eighth issue of AVENGERS:CHILDREN'S CRUSADE that we get the very first peek at the seeds being planted for the upcoming major story.

What happens when power-hungry Doctor Doom is given the power of the Life Force? Will he use it for good, or will he manipulate those around him to control the people and world around him? If you know Doom, then you know he does not play fair, and given cosmic powers and the healing factor of the Life Force you can just imagine the kind of damage he can do.

It's definitely interesting to see Doom contradict himself, saying things like "I shall make ours a planet free of poverty, disease and war..." and in the next breath blasts Wanda and the Young Avengers home, setting them up to pit the Avengers and the X-Men against one another. Here is another incredible issue of AVENGERS: THE CHILDREN'S CRUSADE that will have you at the edge of your seat. Not only is the story one of the absolute best to hit shelves this week, but the art of Jim Cheung is equally jaw-droppingly gorgeous. It's Wanda versus Emma Frost and Avengers versus X-Men versus Doom all rolled into one, and the end will leave you puzzled and maybe even a little bit sad. What will happen next? How can this get any better?

The Bad

Absolutely nothing bad here. Gorgeous book, exciting story and tons of fun. One of the best books out this week.

The Verdict

What an incredible story this has been! As if it couldn't get more exciting, Allan Heinberg ups the ante with issue 8 of 9. Jim Cheung's gorgeous art help tell an exceptional story. His ability to capture emotion, action, excitement and expression are incredible. This is the type of book that will leave you sad when you get to the final page and the realization that you have to wait another two months for the final issue sets in. Great way to end the final Wednesday of 2011.

@RainEffect: Has this ended? I thought the 8th issue was released this week?

I've never read Young Avengers, but I'm psyched to pick up this in trade.

I can't wait to get the 8th issue I actually just read the 7th one. Sorry i'm a bit behind D: but i swear if they end up killing off a young avenger at the end of the series i will cry lol. Well unless if it was Patriot or Hulking. It'll be sad but i wouldn't go nuts.

It's a monthly, which is a hefty price to pay considering it is so bloody good. I believe this is the last issue.

Issue #8 absolutely mind-blowing stuff. Wiccan makes a great point regarding the Scarlet Witch. Also, a startling revelation regarding Scarlet Witch's role during Avenger's Disassembled and House of M. Was it really her fault? Did anyone else spot any grammatical errors? For a quality book like this that shouldn't happen, but it's so good I'll let it slide. One more issue to go and then "BAM!"...AvX!

Avengers: The Children's Crusade is one of the Best Series of this year! Along with Uncanny X-Force and X-Factor! :D

The question is...Will this all match up with the upcoming "A vs X" event? At the end of the day it doesn't really matter whether or not it lines up with the current continuity ( because it's such a great series!!), but it would be a nice payoff for the people who have stuck with it for the past year and a half.

p.s.(possible spoiler)

I'm not sure how I feel about the Doom explanation; I think it robs Wanda of some great depth... Masterfull issue, regardless!!

I'm so pissed at the death this issue, that I have no reason to care about this team anymore.

No really, I'm f****** pissed off. Screw this book and screw the team!

Awesome book, and Wiccan's speech was great. Cyclops was being pretty douchey and probably felt salty (yeah I had to bring back that word) after Wiccan was done.

I'm only upset that Doom couldn't give up the power and marry Wanda instead. That would have been too amazing. Doom will be Doom, but for once I wish he would get over himself and be more than Doom. Oh well, we still have the Doom/Val relationship developing in FF, that bound to pay out eventually.

Oh no! Why does Statures life have to be hnaging in the balance! She was one of my favorite Young Avengers, especially since Mighty Avengers. I hope she doesn't kick the bucket. I don't get why they'd bring back Scott only to kill his daughter. While I understand the need for 'bitter sweet' stories, Scott was before my time, Pym is the only Antman I like, and Cassie is better that Scott anyways.

Said it before, and I'll say it again, the bi monthly deal with all the delays are killing this book for me, i dont even know when to expect it to come out, i almost didn't pick this up had my comic guy didn't remind me.

This whole series has gone been a massive disappointment to me. An overextended one at that. Its been dragging majorly, and the shipping schedule hasn't helped from that. They should have cut down the number of issues in the series at the very least.

My problems with the story aside, the art is brilliant.
