Early Talk of Another DC Show Replacing Smallville?

The CW's currently combing DC’s colossal catalog of classic comics characters for content.

 What could ever replace SMALLVILLE?
 What could ever replace SMALLVILLE?

DC capes fans feeling a touch melancholy about SMALLVILLE ending this season and leaving a big, gaping hole in their CW watching can cheer up - - the network’s entertainment prez, Dawn Ostroff, is already thinking about a replacement.   According to the Boston Herald, the CW’s harkened its ear to fans’ concerns and it’s currently combing DC’s colossal catalog of classic comics characters for content that’d could be curved into a cool TV show. This isn’t guaranteed, of course. Ostroff’s stressing that they don’t want to put a new DC show up just to put one on.

Still, I’d say the network would be remiss not to continue putting out content with this kind of crossover appeal. I remember SMALLVILLE was originally spun as “ Superman at DAWSON’S CREEK” and it pulled off the mighty task of uniting usually-disparate audiences for ten years straight. So what show could replace SMALLVILLE? A Green Arrow spin-off seems like it’d be an easy contender. I’d suggest maybe Blue Beetle, given that there’s already been some test footage for a show, but that’s looking like something geared more towards the sensibilities of WB sister station, Cartoon Network. Maybe this is complete the roundabout and lead to BRUCE WAYNE finally getting on the air. You’ll recall that a show about Batman’s globe-trotting, pre-mask early days was in development early on and, I suppose, the whole thing ended up splitting into SMALLVILLE and BATMAN BEGINS.

Or perhaps, perhaps, perhaps… this is the angle for Wonder Woman to finally get back into the popular eye. The WB might not be able to get a movie off the ground, but I could see a show reinventing Diana’s early years in man’s world could work. What do you Comic Vine maniacs think? I’m putting you in the exec's chair. What would YOU program and schedule?

I was under the impression that they kind of confirmed that the Blue Beetle test footage was from Smallville at comic con

Geoff Johns said it was for something else on CBR and that they want a show in addition to the Smallville guest spot.

Whatever it is they should be more straight up and have a superhero and none of this origin stuff like Smallville it was first made when superheroes weren't popular anymore but since they are now then another Smallville would not cut the mustard the only reason it flies is because of the fan base but if pulled of now it would fail.

Since the New Gods are going to be in the final season...why not focus on them?

Secret Six would make a good show.

Since they are already developing it, why not the Blue Beetle series?

Maybe a Legion series?

Maybe remake SHAZAM using the technology of today?

Whoever it is they have to be able to be done with the limited TV budget, so no super high tech FX and CG stuff.  So probably something more down to earth.

Right after their first episode on Smallville I wanted to see a Legion tv series it would be great. Tom Pinchuck is right that Blue Beetle looks like it could be on Cartoon Network.

Honestly though whatever show it is I wonder how much support it would get from CW Dawn Ostroff may feel a need to continue superhero shows based on demands from higher ups since she is notorious for not supporting genre shows or really advertising them and prefers the dramas for teen girls.
igman51on July 30, 2010 at 11:54 a.m.

why dont they just do a spin-off with the justice tv show...it would be great... green arrow, cybrog, impulse,  aquaman, martian manhunter, zatanna, black canary, and maybe they can throw in hawkman as an older mentor, even though i know he is in jsa........ if they do a wonder woman show, i hope its not like half zena, half felicity......yuk!

MORE JSA!!! , MORE JSA!!!
hope they hear me :)

I'm hoping for Blue Beetle. Booster Gold would be the best thing though.

For the CW? No cheesy CGI please. Blue Beetle belongs on cartoon network.
Here's who could work:
Static
Batman
Aquaman
Mr. Terrific
Cyborg
Black Canary
Green Arrow
The Question
Zatanna
Huntress
Son of Vulcan
Ted Kord
Legion of Superheroes stranded in the past.

A Wonder Woman show would be awesome ^_^

Ha!  I was going to mention Booster Gold.  It could be a superhero Seinfeld type comedy.
I love the character.
Booster Gold #32
Booster Gold #32

Booster Gold #33
Booster Gold #33

Or how about a superhero Starsky and Hutch type show?
BLUE and GOLD
Booster Gold (Michael Jon Carter) and Blue Beetle (Ted Kord)
are superheroes for hire, who do whatever work they can including transporting valuable packages, security, and sometimes even as superheroes.

A Wonder Woman show, or Blue Beetle (the newer one), or a spin off using a character already on Smallville would be more likely and probably more cost effective.  (Booster is going to be on Smallville...)
RedHurricane24on July 30, 2010 at 12:22 p.m.
How about a show on The Phantom Stranger? It'll be like Supernatural but with more outlandish foes.

AMP - Seeker of Lost Knowledgeon July 30, 2010 at 12:34 p.m.
@Dracade102: Yes.  From what I heard is that many of the New Gods characters such as Darkseid (seen at the last episode), Granny Goodness, Desaad and Glorious Godfrey will appear in the final season. That's what I know for now...

New Gods seems like it would be too expensive though, all the make up and FX.
It would work better, in my own opinion, as a four part movie, like a Lord of the Rings/Star Wars styled movie.  (totally based in their own world/universe and not connected to Earth at all.)
Secret Identityon July 30, 2010 at 12:42 p.m.
I think WW would be the best choice. Green Arrow is cool but spin-off are usually not as good as originals. There was an Aquaman pilot years ago which looked sweet but the actor took on green arrow in smallville instead.

So yeah... Wonder Woman seems the best choice to me,
