Don't Let The Fact That Vampires Are Here Turn You Off

The second issue of the comic prequel to the horror film with the same name.

    The Good

I remember hearing about the movie but never got around to seeing it. I can't say whether or not the movie justifies the need for a comic prequel but as a stand alone story, so far I'm interested. The story is set in a small town in Indiana and the story centers around a twelve-year-old vampire girl and her "father." How can a vampire feed in a small town without raising suspicion? We're also seeing the budding friendship between this "girl" and the young boy next door.

The art by Patric Reynolds with Dave Stewart's art really captures the mood. You do get the small town feel and when night comes, you can feel the setting change. Being that this is a horror comic, it's not done in an over the top style.

    The Bad

It's a nice story but since I haven't seen the movie, I'm not sure if there's a need for a prequel comic. From what I've heard, the movie was decent but not remarkable. I wonder why this is being made now rather than before the movie was released or at least when it was in theaters.  Being halfway through, the next issue will determine if the overall story really works.

    The Verdict

People aren't crazy about vampires but this vampire story is done in a more classic way. The idea of a vampire that appears to be a twelve-year-old girl and her caretaker is interesting. I am enjoying this series but I'm hoping it will stand on its own at the end of the final issue. I haven't seen the movie that this is the prequel for and don't have any immediate plans to. I like that it can tell its own story but I have to wonder why it's being released well after the movie.
