Insanity
Using those super cool but generic Batman covers really works for this series. Most of the covers could be for any Batman comic, so when you've got a series always changing gears, sometimes three tales in one issue, you need a cover that reflects a wide range of Batman, so root it in a core Batman cover.
The first story is absolutely amazing. The artwork is ridiculously jagged and rough, maybe not to the taste of casual readers, but a long time comic reader should be able to admire it's stylistic nature. The rough nature works perfectly with the story, which slowly undermines it's protagonist's sanity. New vigilante Praetorian has captured The Joker, but the situation is still desperate, so Batman is on the way. I can't say too much more without spoiling it, but Joker is really well highlighted as a master of mental manipulation. A perfect and insane little Batman tale.
The second story comes off a little less unique when coming off the heels of the insane first story. A Bat-Man movie is being filmed in Gotham, and the real Joker comes along to cause trouble. The artwork is cleaner, sure, and the flow is smooth; but the story just isn't long enough to fully explore some of the questions it poses about deeper ideas of motivation and cinematography and potential metaphysical awareness.
The third story has a style somewhere between the first two. There's a definite atmosphere of insanity, and the artwork does reflect that. It's not as stylistic as the first, or as smooth as the second, but it's perfectly fine on its own. This one is a nice quick tale, the lack of proper buildup is forgiven in this case, because it's really all about the ending. I found myself a bit befuddled part way through, but the end made things clear in a haunting way that really gripped me.
In Conclusion: 4.5/5
This series continues to showcase unknown talent in tales that stretch the Dark Knight into less explored territory, sometimes simply using what he means as an icon to drive entire stories. It was a little odd to have two Joker stories in a row, but this issue had definite differences from the other three, and I can't wait to see what new territory will be explored as this series continues.
