Mechanika 1
Note: I did not read issue #0.
Story: We are introduced to a world obsessed with mechanical engineering. More specifically, mechanically engineering humans. The reader is also introduced to Lady Mechanika who tries to solve a new problem while we figure out parts of her past along the way.
The good: Right away the cover art drew me in to this issue. I'm not sure what it why, but this may be my favorite cover art of the year so far. There's nothing flashy and it is quite detailed and classy. In fact, the whole issue is classy from front to back. The writing is extremely professional and as a result, the story quickly sucks the reader in. The setting occurs in an 1800's British metropolis-type of setting which keeps things fresh and original. The setting and writing are what sets this issue apart from other releases. Also, the art should not be overlooked as the coloring and style are perfect for the setting. What these guys have created is not easy and it seems like I am not the only one who has noticed this underrated gem from Aspen Comics. The reader is left with a mysterious story that he/she cannot wait to see more of.
The bad: I honestly cannot find much. The advertisements for other Aspen comics run throughout the book and do not look terribly interesting...but what does that have to do with this comic? Nothing.
HIGHLY recommended. 4.5/5 may upgrade to 5 if the series continues to be this strong.
