COMIC BOOK REFERENCES: IRON MAN TRILOGY
PART 2: IRON MAN 2
Anton Vanko was a brilliant Russian scientist. In the comics, he was a Russian spy who then got betrayed by his government and thus decided to become Stark’s ally. In the movie, however, he is not given much backstory and is later on revealed to be a spy who betrayed Howard Stark.
His son, Ivan, the actual villain, is a combination of two villains – Crimson Dynamo and Whiplash. His look also bares similarity to a minor villain from Iron Man comics called Taurus.

In Iron Man vol. 1 #215, it is revealed that Tony Stark is dying because of the exposure from his armor.

Happy Hogan was a retired boxer in the comics.
Natasha Romanoff was also an undercover agent when she first met Tony, albeit, she was actually working for KGB and her mission was to kill Tony Stark.
The hearing scene was inspired by Iron Man vol. 3 #80. Tony also jokes about him being a secretary of defense in the movie, which he became (for a brief period of time) in the aforementioned storyline.
Tony Stark being part of a nascar race and then crashing is taken from Tales of Suspense #40.

Justin Hammer’s goal to turn public perception against Iron Man is from Demon in a Bottle story arc.
Justin Hammer from the movie also bares resemblance to Sonny Burch, who was the villain of “The Best Defense…” story. Justin Hammer of the comics was much less of a public figure. Burch was a two-faced government official who wanted Stark's technology to make profit.
Vanko’s escape from prison is inspired by Iron Man vol.1 #207. Albeit, there, it was a different villain.
Hammer from the comics also recruited Iron Man villains to work for him and supplied them with resources.
Tony Stark wanted Jim Rhodes to replace him as Iron Man in case he was going to die.
Tony’s conflicted view on his father has been constantly explored in the comics.

Like in the comics, Rhodey puts on the armor after he realizes that Tony is too dangerous to be Iron Man.

Bambi Arbogast, a longtime assistant and a friend of Tony Stark in the comics.
The design of War Machine is extremely accurate. However, the way he is created is different, because, in the comics, it was actually Tony Stark who made that armor – for himself. James Rhodes received it after Stark was thought to be dead.
Happy Hogan was helping Iron Man to fight bad guys on many occasions in the comics.
Hammer Drones were supposed to be originally Mandroids, an army of armored henchmen of Justin Hammer. However, they were later changed to regular robots because studio did not want to have Iron Man and War Machine fight real people at the end.
