Fast Forward At Triple Speed!
Sigh. Look, it's better than the Green Lantern banner because I get the point of this one. It's not hyping a movie that didn't need extra hype, and its for a good cause. But it doesn't change the fact that the "We Can Be Heroes" banner is a huge detriment to the covers its on. This one isn't TOO destructive because the blue banner matches the blue sky a bit, but still. It makes the cover feel squished.
So, lets start with the good. I'm two issues behind on Green Arrow, but this is a perfect jumping on point. Annie Nocanti has pretty much ignored any real events of the mediocre runs preceding her, and that's a good thing. I can't emphasize enough how much better this is then them, and any Green Arrow fan should give this series a second chance with the new creative team.
The artwork is much better. MUCH better. I've said many a time that Dan Jurgens is a good artist, but he's a terrible choice for Green Arrow. Jurgens' art doesn't 'move' well, and Arrow needs to be able to move fast all the time. Tolibao's art doesn't completely pull this off, but gets around it very well with a lot of crazy angles. And I have to say, there's a sex scene in this issue that is an impressive balance of both very tasteful, and still very sexy.
This new villain is just adorable. Villains? I... can't really say. It's....weird. Skylark is confusing in a good way, and deflects a lot of that confusion by being so damned adorable. They're not the average steam seductress, they're cute instead of sexy, but they're still extremely effective temptresses. This is also pretty impressive, unique, and interesting. And I was a little bothered by Green Arrow so readily accepting that they were fans who wanted to work with him, but that's justified as a very effective plot twist and reveal of hidden foreshadowing later in the issue.
This issue doesn't really feel like it's dialogue heavy, but it kind of is. Green Arrow talks to himself WAY too much, it gets really annoying. Skylark talk more than your average girl, AND she's three people on top of that. It works for Skylark, but not for Arrow.
But the biggest problem is the pacing. This issue just breezes through a lot of moments that should've taken a little more care to transition through. Things just sped by without much stringing them together or creating suspense. Stuff just kept happening or people were talking, and I just didn't feel like the story was carrying me along to well, yaking me through moments at a rushed speed.
In Conclusion: 3.5/5
The story is so much better than when this series began. The art is significantly better, the dialogue isn't dull or forced, and the plotline is really intriguing. But it's really rushed. I know its Green Arrow, but it still needs to slow down a bit or else the big moments have less meaning.
