He had a black costume instead of his classic costume.
Why? People can get green arrow's costume right, but not Hawkeye's.

@xxxddd: Maybe because they want to base it on the Ultimate Universe or because it would look kind of stupid in a live action film. That's just my opinion.
@xxxddd: It fits better for the film in my opinion and Green Arrow's costume is way cooler than Hawkeye's costume.
I think Clint's costume does look kinda dumb. It's like they had gone with this for Ollie:
No one would take them seriously.

I see.
Doesn't answer the original question I posted in the OP, though.
Like I said, I'm guessing they tought Hawkeye's costume looked too silly to be put in a live action movie (like Batman's costume, for example). That's my theory anyway.

and it's a good one, it's also what I've heard. they decided to go with something more realistic and pratical, just like the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
and the Smallville Green Arrow suit was adapted to comics recently (kinda) because they need a new modern take on the suit. The whole robin hood thing was fine in comics, but when you try to put it out of there... it's kinda silly. That's also why the New 52 took away the underwear over pants thing
That 1610 ultimate B.S. screwing with whats supposed to be based upon the 616 universe, screwed us of that pleasure.

But noone has put forward a source, though.
I don't really remember one, but you can probably google it and find something. Maybe Whedon or someone said something about it. I remember someone commented on the mask, not sure about the costume though (the mask would be really weird to have in a live action)

Somebody modify that image of Smallville Green Arrow into purple to see how it would look like.
@xxxddd: Joss Whedon directed The Avengers but Hawkeye was in Thor first and that was directed by Kenneth Branagh so whoever told you that was mistaken. I am personally glad that they changed it. I think it was like the X-Men costumes. I just can't see them working outside of a drawn medium.
If they can make Thor and Captain America's costume look cool then they could have easily made Hawkeyes look cool. Just sayin'.
They should have at least thrown in a little purple as a nod at least. I didn't mind the changes to his costume because like others have said it really just looks silly in a life action film.
I believe it actually turns out that their budget was cut just short of making some sort of over the top silly costume for Hawkeye and so they had him put on some clothes they found lying around the executive producer's house.
@Blood1991: Hawkeye was an Iron Man villain:? I personally like his original costume but it would look kinda silly in live action. Would be nice if they modified it though and added some purple.
@TheCannon: I mean I seriously can't Imagine this in the Avengers.
It would stand out to much and look stupid in a live action film. However it works great in comics and animated TV shows.

Yeah, I agree. It's a great costume for comics and cartoons. But it would look like a joke in a movie.
@TheCannon: Do you think if they used his comic costume in the movie that it would affect the ratings or anything?
I don't agree with those saying his costume is too silly. Could it make a perfect transition to the movie screen? No, probably not. But with a little work you could have a costume that is very close to his comic outfit that would look just fine. Especially when standing next to the guy basically wearing an American flag and his buddy with chainmail sleeves, silver discs on his chest, and a big red cape.
That being said, Hawkeye not having a full-on costume made perfect sense in the movie. Captain America was wearing a newer version of his old costume which was itself based off a silly-looking propaganda outfit. Thor had his costume just cause he's an Asgardian and that's how they dress. The Hulk IS his costume, and Iron Man's armor is colorful because Tony Stark is a show-off.
Hawkeye and Black Widow were SHIELD agents so they're outfits would be less flamboyant. Black Widow benefits from the fact that her comic outfit was pretty close to a spy costume already. Hawkeye is still mostly a SHIELD agent, so it would make sense for him to still wear SHIELD gear. Especially since he spent most of the movie mind-controlled. I doubt he'd take the time to knock up a colorful outfit before heading off to the big battle.

Yeah his first appearance was as a villain, I do agree they should have went with purple
Personally I wish they ha gone with the original Avengers cast w/o Cap, then made a Cap film and introduce Hawkeye as a minor villain in Iron Man 3. Just a little more cannon. Then you could use his comic costume and it not be out of place.
Sometimes things that you like in the comics doesn't work in the big screen.
In this case, his classic costume will not work, I don’t know why, but I wouldn’t like to see that mask, but still like some of you said earlier they could have at least put a little purple on the costume.
His classic costume would have been corny-looking on-screen although they could have toned it down some and still did it justice. I do feel they should have made it more "super-heroish" than they did, even if it was only a bit more color and high-tech goggles like some iterations of ultimate Hawkeye. As it stood he and BW looked sort of out of place on the team costume-wise.
I understand that the original costume will look silly and Captain American costume even though kinda looks silly compared to Hawkeye or Blackwindow, there was a reason why he wore it.
however i wish they at least modernized his costume instead of just a regular shield clothing cause now hes like a B rate character almost like Robin to Batman. Hawkeye is the Avengers' Robin
The movie was no adaption to the comics , it was politically rebooted to meet the use of the powers that invested in the process . hence there is no blackpanther & such , as costumes , u lucky these " appointed " directors even know what the superhero's look like ... if u follow the tempo feel of the movie it feels like the director never read any comics before .

When I say purple I mean PURPLE that looks more brown than what I had hoped to be closer to the color in the comics.
I agree with what most other people are saying, he would look a bit ridiculous. Saying that they still kept true to Loki's appearance, though they never kept with Thor's helmet during the rest of Thor or The Avengers.

Well technically it's a dark purple, not really brown. If his costume was more purple it would make him a bulls eye. As a spy/soldier it only makes sense that he wears a color that doesn't make him stand out so much.
Because his costume in the comics is ridiculously flamboyant and over-the-top. They toned down Thor and Cap's costumes for the same reasons.
It's funny when people go on about how true to the comics and proud to embrace the campiness of comic books the Avengers and the MCU movies were when they didn't even have Hawkeye wear his most iconic costume. I know he wore that costume in the Ultimates but why not go with the one he's more known for wearing? Makes Marvel look like they aren't 100% committed to making their movies as much like a comic book as they can.
Because it would look really silly. I did wish they added a little more purple to his shield outfit as an homage to his original outfit.

Except Cap's costume looked dumb. In the comics, characters are drawn with much larger shoulders, smaller heads, and taller proportions than real people, even perfectly fit people like Chris Evans or Jeremy Renner. In the movie, Cap's head looked to big and his eyes looked to close together. In the comics, they can manipulate everything to make it look "right" even though it's not really realistic.
