Poll Do you think Superman has the right to be upset that his own government makes weapons to kill him? (23 votes)

Yes 43%
No 57%

Superman and Batman were basically scouring the globe and removing all traces of Kryptonite from the planet so it couldn't be used against Supes. The last location was in Kansas and there Superman found out that the US military was making weapons to kill Superman in case he ever turned evil or got mind controlled.

Superman got really upset at this and considered it a betrayal of trust and wanted the government to hand over every piece of kryptonite and weapons they had in their possessions. The US responded by telling him to F off which resulted in Superman using force (like he always does) to get his way.

Now, Superman's big plan when he turns evil/mind control is to have batman be the guy to bring him down and entrust him with a piece of kryptonite in a box. Now, this to me seems like a dumb idea. Since, if I were an evil superman and I had full knowledge of the one guy who can stop me (with prep), I would immediately go after him and kill him. I would then double down and kill all his allies as quickly as possible.

If Superman was truly serious about having someone stop him then he would realize having a secret agency with multiple players in the mix would be far safer than entrusting one guy in a bat suit.

The problem with Government is that it's always going to have corrupt or incompetent people which means villains will find a way to steal the kryptonite.

Yes.

It's not a problem of doing it, it's a problem of doing it behind his back.

"bUt wHaT iF hE gOeS eViL?" - Trust goes both ways. Superman doesn't go around disabling every weapon of mas-destruction on the planet, he trusts humanity not to wipe themselves out. The human race should extend the same trust to the man who's saved their ass from dozens of planet destroyers and cosmic threats.

Does the average person complain that their government has weapons capable of killing them?

Yes, the primary problem is not trust, but the fact that kryptonite weapons ALWAYS fall into the wrong hands. Any metahuman with the ability to break into government facilities and take said weapons could threaten Superman's life, Heck, Luthor himself has a constant Kryptonite weaponry and is often too close to killing Superman, even though Clark knows about him. If a villain attacks him by surprise with Kryptonite he would just die, and it would be entirely the government's fault for having those "measures" that they were probably never going to use, besides probably using it to push Superman into promoting agendas, political movements, and things just as nefarious, of course.

I'm pretty sure no one is complaining because it's not a good idea to "complain" about nuclear bombs and chemical weapons.

The government doesn't make weapons behind the average person's back.

Also, Superman is treated ridiculously unfairly.

Flash nearly wrecked the multiverse and screwed up the entire timeline, Wonder Woman is willing to kill, Batman was reason for Failsafe taking Gotham hostage (that's not even getting into all the Death Metal bs), and Martian Manhunter had the Fernius rampage. Yet the government doesn't try to build weapons against any of them, even though they've all done way worse than Superman ever has when mind-controlled or angry.

But sure "sUpErMaN iS A tHrEaT"

@superdarth: The government makes basically every weapon behind our backs. This isn’t even debatable. Stealth bombers were in active duty for nearly a decade before the public was aware of them.

Very true it should also be mentioned that people around the world have been asking for nuclear disarmament since at least the 80s so it's not as if the public has 100% faith in their governments to always be level headed

Guarantees do not exist when it comes to emotional beings.

It not even entirely a trust issue. Superman has been brainwashed and manipulated before.

How would you feel if the government was planning to kill you behind your back?

@superdarth: They already do. In the same way they do for Superman. The government will imprison or kill you if you are a threat, as they should. Cops carry guns for a reason, and train to use them to kill us.

Actually, people do complain about those things specifically. But no one complains about the government having the capacity to kill people, because they need it. If the government cannot defeat somebody, that person becomes above the law, which creates instability. The cartels in Mexico are a real life example of this.

The military does not have full transparency with the public.

The government keeps finding even more effective ways to murder humans every year and no one complains, SM needs to suck it like the rest of us.

It's extremely ungrateful, they act like he isn't the nicest guy on the planet.

Then the other JL members should get the same treatment, no? But they don't.

@superdarth: I think being ungrateful is worth preventing an apocalypse.

It’s the same thing with anyone else, if Superman isn’t a criminal, he has nothing to fear. He shouldn’t have absolute authority and the ability to do whatever he wants whenever he wants, just like everyone else in the world.

The problem is that the government is ridiculously bad and keeping their gear in DC, so their hidden weapons always get stolen and used against Superman inevitably. Hence why they shouldn't be making them in the first place.

No. Because it will always fall into the wrong hands. Superman has the patience of a saint for not telling humanity to piss off and abandoning Earth. I would.

He's less popular. When referencing about alien superhero, the first that comes to mind is SM who isn't exactly shy about his origins. How many times do you find MM proudly proclaim his alien status even in interviews?

weapons of such power should never exist at the first place but it isn't really his right, like a normal person can't protest over nuclear bombs.
