A Dynamite First Issue
A story set in 1934 finds Flash Gordon, Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zarkov at the beginning of an epic adventure.
My Thoughts:
Dynamite Entertainment may be one of the most underrated comic publishers out there. They consistently put out quality material. Flash Gordon is a franchise I've always heard of, but have had no prior experience with it. This is the beginning of a new Flash Gordon series where Dynamite looks to revive Flash Gordon. Piloting the series is writer Eric Trautmann and Alex Ross is credited with the plot.
Trautmann does everything you should do in the first issue of a series. He introduces readers to the characters and sets them on their journey. We see some funny and engaging interaction between these characters we're aquatinted with.
I'm not entirely sure what to expect in the issues to come but it appears interesting this far. With Flash being a human and Ming The Merciless a King from another planet that appears much farther advanced than Earth was at that time, I'm not sure how this will all work out. This is all new to me but I'm enjoying it so far.
I don't know if I've ever read a comic published by Dynamite that had bad artwork. Daniel Indro (someone I don't know) handles to art to outstanding results. I mean this art is incredible. From the way the panel construction was conceived to the way the artist captured the time period. I can't stress how amazing the colors were. Slamet Mujiono is the colorist. Another name I don't know but was instantly blown away by their work. The coloring has a painted feel to it and definitely suits the time period the story is set in.
Flash Gordon is definitely worth giving a shot. I took a chance with this issue and had no prior knowledge of Flash Gordon and ended up enjoying this. The price is only $1.00 so it's really worth trying at the very least. I found this to be quite the engaging first issue and will continue following this each month.
