It had potential, but DC bungled it so badly that it seemed pointless. I don't think Johns or most of the editors were fans of the idea; that's why it was just there, but DC never did anything interesting with it. DC could have really explored the results of their relationship to each other and how the rest of the world dealt with the two strongest beings on Earth in a relationship. When it started, I was excited to see what interesting things they would do with it, but alas other than the actual fact that they were a couple, there was nothing of note.
I feel like DC won't go that route again (and even if they do, it won't be for a very long time) based on how they dealt with the relationship post-rebirth: Diana claiming she never loved Clark, DC trying to make it seem like new52 Clark and Lois were soulmates or something, never having Diana mourn or seem like it even bothered her he was dead, and practically no one in-universe acknowledging their relationship existed.
And since DC doesn't seem interested in publishing Elsewords type books anymore, that avenue is closed.
