Totally Unnecessary... And Totally Fun!!!
Was it really necessary 34 years later to go back and make an issue 1.5 of The Avengers?
Probably not, but it's all in good fun. I have absolutely no idea what the story behind this comic is, or why Marvel decided to do it, but this book, drawn and inked by Bruce Timm, who I'd only ever associated with Batman: The Animated Series, is a gem. In the spirit of Lee and Kirby, Timm and writer Roger Stern evoke the feel of early 60s Avengers stories as they tell the tale of the Avengers second encounter which, face it, really should have been against Dr. Doom.
But the comic is more than that - it evokes the feel of the period through really great fake ads for other Marvel titles of the period, and a hilarious letters column (complete with fan letter from Kurt Busiek, age 2, LOL).
The only off note in this fabulous symphony is an 8 page 'bonus' Spider-man story that doesn't really fit. It's the first part of what looks to be a 4 part 'just say no' PSA done in that precious anime fusion style that was so popular in the 90s. Blah.
So, ignore the 'bonus' part and enjoy this wonderful homage!
