Writer: Brian Clevinger Artist: Scott Wegener Color: Ronda Pattison Letters: Jeff Powell Much like a spanking circle im right back at the bottom... *cough* So after a brief break of catching up and anticipating the New 52 titles from DC and Ninja Turtles release, I figured I would relieve your #1 buzz with a review.... of a #1 title. go figure. Rather than jump into talking about DC's big relaunch which is great but lets shine some light on the weird, and the , hmmm robotic i guess. For those who are fans of Atomic Robo already just read the short review, for non fans check out my detailed review to learn more about if this is right for you.
Story: 3 out 5 Art: 4 out of 5 Overall: 3.5 out of 5. Great fringe science characters, story seems strange right now but has promise to be a great volume. There is no reason to not pick this up and just enjoy a good read.
Did I say the story was sexy? maybe it is you might have to pick it up. Brian Clevinger if the name sounds familiar; He might be more notorious out there for some of you internet trolls as the man who started up the 8-bit Theatre web comics based on the first Final Fantasy game. Which you can find that review in one of my early blogs which you can click here.
For people who have not read the series and want a brief history of the character. he is a robot who is atomic powered.
And im getting a signal saying i need to elaborate...egh, so Nikola Tesla created a robot back in 1923 which had automatic Intelligence. basically lots of wacky adventures, fighting nazis, dinosaurs, and founding a new science industry called Tesladyne. where all the cool nerds hang out. Sexy I know.
The synopsis of this story is that Robo has a few hours to try to save about seven astronauts as things have gone wrong up in space. so its up to robo to pull off some sort of miracle rescue mission. Now while that is the main focus there is subtle hint to another story which is going to build up and may interfere with his mission. OOOOOOOOOooooooOOOOO!
Overall for the story I give it a 3 out of 5. Its good character interaction, much like what you would see in the Invincible series which can be an easy carrying point. its very light hearted in terms of how it pushes the story. its not fast paced and makes your heart race but its still good read.
The art for the characters in this series is simple, but it works so well in a character story as it really makes the characters seem very likable. In the words of Martha Stewart : And thats a good thing. But that can also be a problem with some of you fickle readers out there who are picky *shakes head at you*. and yes I mean you.
I like the colors for this as it goes great with scotts art, so great job Ronda, the colors are simple and compliments scotts art well. its not over bearing or under done, its a good tone and thats a hard thing to get alot at times. so to me Ronda made the art that much better.
Over all i have to give the art a 4 out of 5. not cause I want too, its cause Not everyone out there will be fans of this art type. but what I can say is that if you liked Astounding Wolfman, Invincible, Super Dinosaur, then you will love this art and you would give this a 4.5 out of 5 or a 5 out of 5. but for those perfectionists out there... yes Im still looking at you, they may not like it as much. But still a great job guys.
Overall:
3.5 out of 5, Right off the bat im starting on this. its a good comic especially for an independent where its hard to break out but Atomic robo has a good following and the series has many merits, its funny, great characters, and simply fantastic art. Clevinger and Wegener are a good combination and works great.
On that note, where it does fall apart is that its so easy to get into a character story that it takes away from the main story, and maybe some action. but being the open minded intellectual reviewer that I am... SHUT UP I AM!.. I can sit through this book with out much of a problem at all. you certainly get enough pages in the price that you pay so it does make up for that fact.
So go out there and pick it up if your interested, but if you don't end up buying it directly though I think you should and give it a try, you should try to find a friend who has already bought it and at least read it. You don't need much prior knowledge to read this book, and that is one of its selling points. its a simple story you can jump into without prior knowledge. so thats all and have a good read everyone.
