X-Men: First Class Character Profile: Havok

I thought Havok was Cyclops' little brother?

But Havok is Cyclopslittle brother! How can he show up FIRST CLASS as a teenager in the 60s when WOLVERINE already showed Cyke in high school in the 80s?

Perhaps he’ll be treated like a completely-different character who shares only Alex’s powers and codename? Well, he’s been clearly identified as Alex Summers in that character-specific teaser, so I suspect some familial details will have to change. Maybe Alex will end up being the older brother in these movies? Or perhaps he’ll be a cousin or an uncle? Could he even be (*GASP *) Cyclops’ father in this new continuity?

No Caption Provided

The likeliest answer is that FIRST CLASS isn’t too beholden to the timeline established in the previous movies and Havok is just filling in for Cyclops for the sake of variety. Before this discussion starts sounding any more like a paternity-themed episode of MAURY, let’s take a step back and look at Havok’s history in the comics.

== TEASER ==
No Caption Provided

With the one of the oddest outfits to ever come out of the Silver Age, Havok debuted rather early on in X-history with UNCANNY #54. He was actually one of the first mutants to join the X-Men after the original five of Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, Beast and Marvel Girl. so he was pretty close to the "real" first class, anyway. He had been long separated from his older brother Scott after the two had been seemingly orphaned as boys when their parents were abducted by the Shi’ar during a private flight in Alaska. Because the two boys had to share a parachute, they had a real rough landing which left them with brain injuries that’d give them trouble controlling their awesome powers for the rest of their lives.

Scott and Alex’s powers have always had odd parallels. Where Cyclops absorbs sunlight to emit optic blasts he needs ruby quartz lenses to control, Havok absorbs cosmic rays to project spiraling plasma blasts he usually needs a high-tech harness to control. When they fight (as brothers often do,) they’re immune to eachother’s powers. That is, if Cyclops blasts Havok, nothing will happen.

If you want to get even more particular about the parallels, both of their codenames draw from Greek mythology - - a conceit that was continued by Vulcan, the third Summers boy.

Traditionally, Havok’s plasma blasts have been depicted as either yellow or blue in hue, but FIRST CLASS makes them red to draw an even stronger connection to Cyclops’ eye beams. While the color has changed, control is still enough of an issue for Havok that his teaser's devoted almost entirely to Professor X teaching him how to better handle his gift.

No Caption Provided

As mentioned, Havok’s had one of the more visually-distinct gimmicks in supehero comics, with concentric circles usually running in a lively pattern over his mostly-black jumpsuits. While movie Xavier’s mechanical harness allows him to focus his energy into a pulsing beam that emits from his chest - - as it does in the comics - - some creative license has been taken for the quality of his powers in their out-of-control state. As many have commented, it looks like he’s flinging hula hoops of light off of his body.

I don’t expect that FIRST CLASS will make any references to the rest of Havok’s career. Don’t expect allusions to his temporary leadership of the Brotherhood, his on-and-off relationship with Polaris, his time in the alternate world of MUTANT X or his current position as head of his father’s space pirates, the Starjammers. Considering how these X-Men are working with the government, there might be a sly nod to his later leadship of the second iteration of X-Factor (as that was the feds’ own mutant team.) Forgoing all of that, Havok will just simply be a wayward youth guided through the pangs of his mutation by the benevolent Charles Xavier.

Maybe I'm just an excited, overzealous, and hopeful fanboy, but maybe Havok is Cyclops' younger brother in this.  Singer never said that they weren't brothers, but that "it wouldn't physically fit" for them to be brothers.  So far in the few interviews that I've read/seen, Lucas Till has freely stated that he is Cyclops' brother.

Its possible that he could be a dimensionally/temporally displaced Havok similar to that only in how his character was tossed into Earth-1298.  I remember early reports that likened XMFC to Abrams' Star Trek.  Maybe Havok is XMFC's Dr. Spock.  I'm going to go waaaaaaaay out on a limb and SPECULATE that the supposed surprise cameo is Cable coming to bring Havok back to his rightful dimension/time, and right some of the wrongs of X3 and XOW.  Bishop/Rachel Summers/even Jean Grey could be likely candidates to do such.  Wishful thinking, right?

As far as his Brotherhood leadership, it would be cool to have Havok and Mystique be the first members of Magneto's Brotherhood.  Havok staying with Xavier sounds too predictable an outcome.
Just sayin.  :D

I'm excited about this. I'm glad it's a stand alone film and isn't involved with the other X-films.

People continue to forget that the X-Men movies have a timeline that throws continuity between the comics , and even among themselves, out the window. Even though X-Men: First Class is suppose to be a "reboot" of the series, the studios still try to keep the movie in the same vein as the original films (which to me, is a big mistake). Unlike so many others, I did not like Byran Singer's twist on the X-Men and felt that he did the comic and it's characters a big disservice. I've also learned that you should never believe the hype when it comes to trailers. The Last Airbender looked awesome in trailer form but the actual movie was awful.
If you want to talk about a bigger continuity problem with this movie, I present you this quagmire:

In the first X-Men movie, a scientist named Hank McCoy was shown on the television, being interviewed on the topic of mutants. Even though it was mainly considered to be a Easter egg in the movie, most people recognized it and realized it was a nod to pre- blue fur Beast and that he would probably be in later sequels.  In X-Men: First Class, we witness Hank transforming into the furry Beast we have all come to know.

My question is: If this films are suppose to be on a timeline, why did they have Hank transform into Beast in First Class but in the first proper X-Men film, he was still regular Hank McCoy, the scientist? They could have even saved time and make up and introduce Beast the same way the comics did by showing him being apart of the X-Men before he turned furry and blue. Even as I type this, I realize this fact: Fox does not care about trying to make sense of this films. There's several other things about the movie I really don't like (Sebastian Shaw being played by a skinny Kevin Bacon & several other details that I can't speak on until the movie is released because they may be spoilers).

All in all, I want to be excited for this movie but the grim reality is that Fox has yet to create a really good X-Men movie. Fingers are crossed but my breath is not being held.

Personally I don't mind if the movies stray or even completely ignore the comics timeline/back history in most cases as long as the story and script are good, the movie is entertaining and well made and they at least stick true to the character (powers, looks, etc.)

My thing isn't even that they're ignoring comic book continuity. I've come to accept that they won't really honor the story and now look at the movies as something completely different, which they really are. My thing is that they're ignoring their own continuity.

X-Men 3 was not really a success like the first 2 X-Men movies so you can't really blame them for taking a different take on continuity. An altered X-Men is better than being a slave to what they've already established.

It does seem a bit strange, because the stories are all there, years and years worth, so why not use them.  It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to try and create an engaging and captivating story from scratch when there's thousands and thousands of pages of storyline readily available.

Think about how awesome it would be if they started making trilogies of different story arcs using the characters and enemies found in those story arcs.

*Sigh* half of yall could care less what they change and that to me is sad.. they are just borrowing the characters name and traits and leaving everything else to the wayside when its what made them popular to begin with.  I hate when corporate executives micromanage anything dealing with creativity or art.  The result is bound to be unfavorable.  Why Havok or Azazel are even relevant in this film is very telling..  I had no Idea Azazel was an original villain.. silly me

yeah that what i thought what the hell, alex is the younger and why he is appearing in the 60's or 70's he is the younger brother of scott and honestly they spoiled the movie , also dr hank mccoy i didn't become beast yet, i saw him in x-men 2 united he appear as a normal person in the cameo before x-men 3 last stand he appear at the scene at the bar in the tv interview as hank mccoy.
emma frost why she look older in the 60's or 70's after she supposed to be old in wolverine in the x-men also she appear wolverine origins like you said i don't know what year was it if you said it it was the 80's when scott was in high school , so emma frost appear young girl in caged trap with cyclop later then and finally scott , emma and the rest of the mutant to according they just met charles xavier kinda young, bald and when he use to walk

So let me get this straight, Havok is older than Cyclops in the X-men movie, are they related  like they are in the comic book. In the Last Stand Xavier and Marko did not recognize each other as brothers, the question I have is Will Havok tell us anything in the movie about his past or his brother, Cyclops

I would hate them if they bring in time travel.  I for one hope that movie Havok turns out to be Cyclops' other brother or even father.  Movies shouldn't be forced to stick to the canon of the comic books.  As long as they keep the characters in line with their powers, they should be able to deviate.  Unless they deviate to something like making Apocalypse a hero, then I'd nerd rage.

Hi !

There is a two-in-one thing to consider : the Fox really doesn't care about the comics and doesn't respect people. "Remember "Dragon Ball" ? Okay.

So, Havok in the early 60's or Azazel (aargh). Is there a reason ? I don't think so. Just characters picked at random because they were not seen before or because they're so cooool or because-we-must-find-a-role-for-this-one because-she's-getting-famous (Zoe Kravitz).

That said, maybe because Singer is involved in the production, "First class" respects more or less the timeline of the three first movies. In "Last stand", it is suggested that Beast was an ancient student of Xavier (obviously he is older than Storm or Cyclops) and he has evolved. His cameo in X2, a remain of a former version of the script (he was intended to be one of the mutants showed affected by the dark cerebro) must be now ignored, or explained later.

Using the character of Havok in this movie exemplify what I've said about Fox : they don't give a sh**. To them, Cyclops is not cool because teenagers don't like him. In the former three movies, Cyclops is at best a gizmo (to blast things), he is a poor tactician (to Storm : "fried him !") and at worst he is a whiny, useless man. So, why not dispoil Cyclops of another one of his features (his relationship with his little brother) and create a new (and coooler) character ?

I hope a good movie but I'm not naive. Singer had to deal with the Fox executives narrow-mindedness and stupidty before (Ratner didn't care) and I guess Vaughn must had to. So cross your fingers, guys. A lot.

I'm actually not so worried about this but it seems like he is Scotts father here, especially with the red (although i think blue would have looked cooler). I hope that in the sequels he adopts the black suit with the circles or updates that hula hoop think from the trailer.

Over the years I've come to expect studios to utilize basic story ideas and character concepts, but throw everthing else to the wind. I understand that they do this for a number of reasons. For one, they are trying to appeal to the masses rather than the core audience they should be concentrating on if they wanted to actually do the movie true justice.

The movie that first comes to mind that suffered because of this is Mortal Kombat. I know this isn't a comic movie, but it suffered the same fate as many comic based movies. They castrated it so that a younger audience could watch it. The end result was a family friendly mediocre action movie when it should have been closer to the Mortal Kombat Legacy shorts that are just now coming out.

Another problem is that the people heading the projects have no interests or knowledge of what they are in charge of. They're coming into it as business men rather than fans. Even bringing in a good group of people to work on the film will only do so much if they are given restaints and guidlines.

Needless to say, I still watch every comic related movie that comes out. I am a long time fan, and will take what I can get in terms of movies. At first, I used to get irked at all the inconsistencies because I knew how events and characters were supposed to be. After repeatedly being disappointed I started viewing each movie as an Elseworlds story. Or some alternate timeline, ala the Ultimate Universe or the Mutant X universe were things were way different. From then on, I found that I can enjoy the movies more. Even ones that I previously didn't like much.

All that said, I would still love to start seeing movies coming out specifically made by fans for fans. Of course, there will always be liberties taken. You can only do so much in  live action and in a couple hours time frame. They would have to take full storylines and break them up into trilogies Lord of the Rings style. Some things can only be conveyed through comics or animation unfortunately. Be it because cost or technology.

So there's my few cents on the subject...

This is precisely why these studios really do need to consider what changes they make and why.

Yes, I accept that there will be changes. Changes are fine so long as they are sensible, respectful, and help make the CHARACTERS accurate. Iron Man changed so much, but it felt like Iron Man and it felt entirely complete. It had a good deal of staying true to the source, too.

Studios are stuck with this mentality of, "We need to make them accessible to people who might not have read a million comics." Yes, but that doesn't mean it has to suck ass. Not only do I believe comic book movies largely fail in their goal of turning people onto the source, but fans of the source are the ones who provide the harshest reviews if they are NOT seen as good movies.

Look at this very article, for example. We're all sitting here talking about how shitty X3 was, but the people who enjoyed it probably forgot it by now. Bad impressions last longer in the comic community.

I'm not saying they need to do a 100% faithful adaptation of Nova, I'm saying they need to pay more attention to the source. If it has more to do with the source AND people like it, then they have more chance of liking the comics. Watching X1, I cannot say that anyone would watch that and be AS satisfied with the comics, because they're totally different.

Marvel Studios, and Marvel in general, act like us being pissed off is no big deal. Tom Brevoort recently said that angry fans are better cos that means they sell more. It just smacks of not caring for the consumer. I respect that without Marvel I wouldn't have the characters I love, but this is a mutual relationship. Let's see how many units you shift if fans stop buying (Not likely, but still).

Marvel need to stop taking their fanbase for granted, seriously.

If The Avengers flops in the eyes of the fans, it won't matter what reviews it gets from non-comic reading popcorn munchers.

This movie will suck. At least with the other x-men movies it kinda made since and could've worked as an alternate version, but this one has no grounds to relate or stand on. Havok doesn't belong nor do magneto and mystique.  Xavier should just be training the members and  Jean and Scott are missing. This film coulvd've made the less known charaters known to the public. The previous movies were mostly about Wolverine being the badass and the hero, but this movie doesn't have him, so it could make the original guys stand out. I'll be watching only Avenger movies from now on.-3-

Whereas the first two X-movies did a decent job of having Wolverine as the main character but kind of incidental to the plot and X-3 outright making the Logan the main character, First Class is making the Xavier and Magneto the focus, with the X-Men (probably) serving as examples of how both men's visions form initially together and later fracture apart. Both paths (probably) make little room for exploring the individual X-Men characters in depth, but I think the Xavier/Magneto dichotomy is WAY more important to the X-Men mythos than Wolverine's man without a past is, even though I suppose he (and Rogue to some extent) are suppose to be the surrogates for the audience in this strange, new world.

While I understand the X-Fan negative reaction to not having the "real" first class in this movie, the X-Men lineup has always been different in other media. I think if the movie line up allows them to effectively explore the relationship between Xavier and Magneto, then that is way more important than slavishly following comic book continuity.

Also: Havok is Cyclops' older brother in the Ultimate Universe, so there is precedence for that.

I wonder how many fans who say they shouldn't mess with continuity still like Storm? The Storm from the comics wasn't supposed to exist, at least, not in that form. She was supposed to be a cat-like mutant ala Feral. There is only so much you can put into a movie. Wasting time on explaining how Alex and Scott are brothers is trivial. I've been a comic fan for over 30 years, and I am just happy to see Havok and Banshee get screen time at all. Marvel won't hit 100% bullseyes, but give them credit for trying something new.

marvel has nothing to do with the xmen movies. fox has owned the rights to the xmen for a very long time, since the 90s cartoon if i remember right. hence why the movies take so many liberties changing characters, origins, powers etc. the only true marvel movies that have been made are iron man 1 and 2, thor and the incredible hulk with captain america and the avengers coming out soon.
