Review: Pilot Season: Crosshair

Story by Silvestri. Written by Jeff Katz and Pencilled by Allan Jefferson

Marc Silvestri recruits Jeff Katz to write a story about a ex-government agent, who's been enjoying his non-government life. The agent's, Justin Weller, life soon crumbles as the government hunts him down in his own suburban neighborhood, and Weller decides to step up and hunt them right back.

The Good

All right, I know we've all read or seen a movie with this story at least once. (Red, The Bourne Trilogy, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith as a couple of examples) This book does have its differences though. Weller has a family, and his fatherly instincts kick in pretty quick. We get a glimpse into his thought process as he's hunted, and we see Weller treat the neighborhood like his own personal assassin's playground. I really enjoyed seeing this, but that wasn't all I thought was cool. We have the character "Mother," who almost seems like a cultish leader, more Illuminati than Heaven's Gate though, and it looks as though this character, who ends up being more powerful than I originally perceived, will be a force to reckoned with if the story were to continue. The art and writing are both exciting and fresh, and it feels like a big budget film. This is one of my favorite Pilot Season stories simply because I love action films, and this feels like one.

The Bad

I said it before, but I'll say it again. I've seen stories like this a few times. Not enough where I'm sick of it though. There seem to be some fresh ideas within this story, but it's hard to tell how it will play out unless the book gets picked up. Other than that, I didn't have any real problems with the book simply because it's an enjoyable read.

The Verdict 4/5

It's a solid book, and if you're sick of super-heroes, which many of us feel from time-to-time, this is a refreshing break from the tedium, and before you make your final judgment, based on my review. Look at this picture I took of a panel:

How could you not want to read a book where a guy, in a robe, goes down a slide with an assault rifle? This book is action packed, violent, and plain fun. Highly recommended.

Thank God it wasn't an upskirt shot.  Just sayin'.....

Good to have more spotlights on titles that aren't DC or Marvel.
