Punisher Meets Black Widow in a Cross-Over This August

Writer Nathan Edmondson works with Phil Noto and Mitch Gerads on what looks to be one heck of a cross-over!

This August, something pretty awesome is happening at Marvel. Writer Nathan Edmondson is having two of his Marvel books cross-over for a story called "Friend From Foe:" Punisher and Black Widow.

BLACK WIDOW #9, featuring the art of Phil Noto, and PUNISHER #9, with art from Mitch Gerads, both books feature characters who may not always act like heroes, but it's a cross-over that makes perfect sense.

“Both stories led us to a place where a crossover was possible at just about the same time,” say series writer Nathan Edmondson in an interview with Marvel.com. “We knew fans were clamoring for it from the beginning, but we didn’t want to rush into it – when it was a natural time, we came up with a really unique way to launch into it... Frank and Natasha are a really interesting pair to combine together... On the one hand, they seem to exist in the same kind of heroic/antiheroic space in the Marvel Universe, but at some point the similarities stop and the disparity begins, and the tug and pull between those two ends will be at play here.”

The two-part cross-over will actually feature the infamous Crossbones and his Skull Squad and the duo will be racing against the clock in order to complete their mission. Check out the covers for these upcoming books.

I'm down! Love the art on the new Punisher series, but as I'm not a big Punisher guy, I've passed so far. This will give me a good reason to check it out.

They're both two of my favorite ongoings right now, so I'm looking forward to it.

Oh my god YES! As soon as I picked both these up I was waiting for this to happen

I like this idea. Will I buy it...probably not, my wallet is empty
Also, those covers are fun

Is that mask part of his costume now?

Hopefully it's better than that horrible Avengers Confidential movie that featured them.

Really looking forward to this. Crossbones would serve as a great antagonist for these two as well.

Very excited for this (and damn, how amazing is Phil Noto?).

Just wish that we could get some stuff with Rachel Alves

I take it this will be building off of the Punisher's next arc since he's going up against Crossbones in it.

Hype. Hopefully, there's references to their encounter in Punisher: War Zone where Frank got Nat to fight some terrorists in order to prove his point.

Man, I love me some Crossbones.

Can someone explain the point of the mask

Posted by MadeinBangladesh

Cool but Edmondson hasn't really blown me away with either of these titles so far. They are...average. IMO

I came here to say what this wise man already did.

Hopefully it's better than that horrible Avengers Confidential movie that featured them.

So when did frank start rocking a skull mask?

Can someone explain the point of the mask

CALL OF DUTY, BRO!!!! WHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Actually, I've heard it is a legit terror tactic used by special police and military teams. Also, it allows teams to both remain faceless, and hide their true numbers, since when everyone looks alike, it's hard to keep count of them.

So when did frank start rocking a skull mask?

He did in Punisher Noir

and these punishers as well:

I feel like im one of the few who likes the mask.

Anyway, stoked for this crossover. The Punisher is my favorite character and I've been enjoying Black Widow's book so this should be fun.

@redlantern23: Hey, since your such a big fan, how would you personally rate the animated movie they just had?

I really enjoyed the Blu Ray and enjoy the Widow Comic series right now so this could be cool.

@captainmarvel4ever: Ehh, it was ok. I'm not a huge fan of any of Madhouse's previous Marvel animated films, although I feel like this was the best one. Poor voiceovers, weird pacing, and shoehorned cameos kind of made it hard to get through. Unless you're a huge fanboy for either character I'd probably pass on it.

@redlantern23: I felt the exact same way, thanks for the insight.

Kind of sucks that I don't read Punisher but read Black Widow..

Posted by Jonny_Anonymous

@dagmar_merrill: You don't need to read both issues because it tells the same event's from different perspectives. But you should be Reading Pun 'coz it's great.

Been hearing great stuff from both titles. Can't wait to pick them up on trade. Would have been more excited if this was made into a 4 or even 6 part crossover. Rather than just 2 issues. But oh well. I just too used to these big event story arcs. Perhaps it's best to have it short and sweet.

Posted by Maddpanda531

@jonny_anonymous: A team-up, maybe? Or what if it was a third ongoing penned by Edmondson. Maybe Winter Soldier, because he'd probably play out like a mix of Black Widow and Punisher.

Posted by dagmar_merrill

@jonny_anonymous: I sure hope so, because I don't want to pick up Punisher and if that wasn't the case I would drop Black Widow.

Posted by Jonny_Anonymous

@maddpanda531: I would love a WS book.

That is the case, Edmondson said so in the CBR interview but dude even if it wasn't you would really drop a book because one issue happens to crossover with another book? Also whats wrong with the Punisher?

@jonny_anonymous: LOVING The Punisher. I've heard some people are kinda meh on it but I think its great. Great first arc and surprising first foe but it works. I think its an awesome representation of how a 616 Punisher should be.

What do you think of it?

Reminds me of Punisher Noir.

No, I think it would just mean that this would mean that this would cross over with other books more often which isn't what I want. I do really love Black Widow so far though.

I just don't like the Punisher.. not for me.

Posted by CaptainHoopla

Normally I despise crossovers, but since I'm already reading and enjoying both of these books and they are both written by Edmondson, then bring it on. Also, I love Crossbones and he'll make a great enemy for these two. What ever happened to Sin? Add her to the mix and it'd be perfect.
