Nickelodeon Buys 'Ninja Turtles' For $60 Million

Those are some pricey ninjas in a half shell!

Those are some pricey ninjas in a half shell!

It was revealed early Wednesday that the popular media company, Nickelodeon, had purchased the international rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from the Mirage Group and 4Kids Entertainment for a whopping $60 million. A company like Nickelodeon would not spend that much money on the rights to a concept without having some idea of what they want to do with the franchise, right? According to a report from the Hollywood Reporter, the company intends to launch a completely CG-animated TV series to be released at the same time as the upcoming film in 2012. Nickelodeon, a branch of Viacom, intends on introducing the franchise to a younger audience.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shares a comedic sensibility with the Nickelodeon DNA, with added layers of action and fantasy that have kept this property an evergreen favorite with multiple generations of audiences," said Cyma Zarghami, president, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group. "We are extremely happy to have the opportunity to be able to focus on this property and creatively re-introduce it to a new generation of kids."

Added Paramount president Adam Goodman: "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a property that maintains a very passionate global fan base, is rich with opportunity for a tentpole movie, and is exactly the right property for us to work together with Nickelodeon."

The deal also means that the CW network will lose their rights to the hit television series TMNT by August 31st, 2010. Do you think that the purchase is a good thing? Are you looking forward to another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie?

I LOVE TMNT!!!!

Altho the CGI stuff isnt my real favorite i remember (and have a couple seasons) of the first animated show they had, badass stuff back then. And the movies were awesome, i want more live action TMNT movies.

Wow! That's  $15,000,000 per turtle!  They can afford to move out of the sewers now... ;)

it would be awesome if they did an animated series with same production value as Avatar

That sucks, no more turtles on 4kids, don't get me wrong, I'm not the biggest 4kids fan, but I love their TMNT, then again, the show recently ended so there's no reason to keep it.

I really hope it reuses the 4 turtles actors from the recent CGI movie, and I really hope they reconsider and give it the style of Avatar

I liked the 4kids one until they went to the future.

Seriously?  Does Nickelodeon really think there is that large of a windfall for TMNT?  Sounds like a really really bad business venture, nothing agains TMNT or the fans whatsoever, the turles are fun.

I just think $60 million is  A LOT of scratch for this property, regardless of any potential international profits.    Is this real news?  WTF.

Were the execs at Nickelodeon half-baked when they decided to spend that much money for heroes on the half-shell?  Pun intended.

I heard they were going to make a gritty hard-edged TMNT movie in 2011 or so, but now that nickelodeon bought them, I don't see the movie happening. Which stinks.

TMNT was actually pretty damned good.

kevin eastmen and peter laird lived the american dream!! Two stoners made a weird comic that turned into a million dollar franchise that has lasted over twenty years, impressive!

Oh wow! I really hope this deal means good for the Turtles. They have always been a big part of my life.

For that price you'd expect to have the whole shell.

Here's a problem I see. It's the company known as "4Kids Entertainment". This company is infamous for taking a product and dumbing it down for an audience it was never intended for. They did it to the anime One Piece years ago. They altered art work such as paining out breast lines of women so none would have cleavage, they removed entire story arcs. It's the equivalent of changing the Anne Rice Vampire novels so they don't kill or suck blood, but slap around and kiss cheeks. It's the altering of a product for an audience that it was never intended for.

I agree. I mean, when were the turtles last relevant? The late 80s into the 90s. Seems like alot of money for such old material.

I'll give it a wait and see.

TURTLE POWER !!! ....Lol sorry

Think of the cross overs nick can do with the turtles! TMNT meet Jimmy Newtron,  or Spongebob, or iCarly...the possibilities are staggering!

Wow...this just came out of nowhere! The CGI sounds nice, but i still like hand drawn animation instead

KOWABUNGA!!!!

I loved the turtles ever since 6 years old. I used to watch the cartoon all the time, has them all on VHS. Can't wait to see what Nickolodeon does with it!
Posted by goldenkey

they keep making it younger, they need to make it more violent.

isn't anyone putting master Splinter into consideration? anyone at all cuz he to is a very important character ya know

This could be really good. Considering Nickelodeon's ability to tap into an audience beyond its intended preadolescent demagraphic with Avatar, we could see a TMNT show that captures the interest of children and young adults alike. But what does this mean for the next movie? I love TMNT so I'm on board for the time being...but I guess we can say goodbye to the possibility of a gritty live action turtles movie. To this day, the 1989 film stands as one of the best movie adaptations of a comic book ever. Such a project may be impossible now that Nick is catering to the kids.

TMNT has been for kids for a while now. It's time for something different.

Posted by creed603

I enjoyed the animated movie that came out a few years back and thought the animation looked great.  I don't see the need for cgi unless it tops the look of the last film.  Also it would be nice for a series to coincide with the movies so my kids could keep up with the story.

Posted by Caligula

I hope they do a series based closer to the comics. and mabye even have it be in Black and White. although most kids would probably ignore it, and the show would be cancelled :(

Kids today are fickle
Posted by CATMANEXE--defunct
@Caligula: id see no reason to not have a direct to DVD one like that though. Peter deserves that much.
