Captain America #601: "A Very Special Issue..."

G-Man reviews the issue to see if it is indeed 'special.'

Do you like flashback stories?  Does reading a tale for Cap and Bucky's past appeal to you?  What do you think about the black and white variant?  Check out the video and see if this is actually a "very special issue."

Maybe I just wanted more.  Maybe I'm just starting to expect too much from Ed Brubaker.  Do you think this flashback tale will tie into Steve Rogers' trippy out-of-time adventure.

This was the issue that made me drop Cap.... I had enough of the flashbacks that didn't really add to anything and the art was so bad that I couldn't press on.

I understand that Gene Colan is a legend, and for his time, his work was great. But it was annoying to me in this issue. His faces were awful and the anatomy was way off.

@G-Man: I actually didn't dig this issue that much. Felt too out of place. Disrupted the flow of Cap & Rebirth y'know?

My thoughts exactly.  It felt like a filler issue.  Unless there is a connection we're not seeing.  Steve Rogers is going to return as a VAMPIRE!

After this issue it will be.  A nice story but I don't get why it was put out now.

Since Rebirth I've been back tracking reading the TPB to see Bucky progress as Cap. Ed Brubaker has done a great job with what I read so far but I don't see myself getting into this issue. I am curious to see his artwork but from what I saw in the vid. It didn't look spectacular. Yeah, it does seem like Marvel had to ink out a little more money before the hiatus.

G-Man, Gene Colan has always been known to draw like that. He draws his faces and bodies like they're stressed out at the moment or contorted during action, or as if he drew them with a single line without his pencil leaving the page. But, he's got legions of fans, many who've been influenced to become artists. He draws like he was influenced by political caricaturists. I've got an Atom story from the sixties that he drew where Atom v.s. Dr. Light, and another one he did with Power Man and Swordsman, and his artwork still looks that way, and people said it then, too. He draws like a political cartoonist or a caricaturist, but he draws cool mechanical stuff, too.

Since WHEN did anyone call Bucky a pansy? I mean, seriously!! NOT Bucky Barnes!!!! This kid can kick ass alongside Cap any day!!!!!!!! 8O

I loved the art. That changed everything for me. If the art wasn't so good, l would've been more upset.

Maybe Mr. Colan's heart wasn't into the story and that's why the quality isn't that great.  I recall that vid and visit to the Museum, that was awesome.

No, one of those issues I mentioned, if not the both of them, was drawn by Gil Kane, and NOT Gene Colan, but he has received similar comments about his artwork. The museum must be awesome. Win Mortimer and Mike Sekowsky would also get these kind of comments. It may be just because they can draw caricature style particularly well and it shows in their artwork.

I'm not crazy about bringing him back so soon. I did like this issue because of the art. The art really won me over. But l also liked the WW2 theme. I've always been a fan of WW2 stories so that was cool for me.

Good art and a kinda' neet story. I didn't see much wrong with it. Afterall, we've been getting bombarded by Captain America Reborn lately. It's good to just take a break from that and get another Cap' story.

I've always enjoyed the flashbacks of WW II , but from your review it didn't sound like really an exciting issue. Nor did it seem like anything was moving forward with the storyline. I'll take a gander of the issue and see if it's worth picking up.

This just didn't do it for me. I know they were just sitting on this book but it doesn't make sense to release it now. Okay issue and the art was great. Would have loved to get my hands on the black and white, the coloring kinda makes the  pencils seem flat.

I dunno. l looked at the preview for the Black/White version on Marvel.com and it didn't look as cool. I thought that the regular version was better so l went with it.

The art was definitally the best part, so l'm glad that l made that decision.

I'm a huge Captain America, like many of you on the Vine know, and well...I didn't like the issue at all, I love WWII stories, I love seeing men and woman fighting for what they believe in, but this story was just domb, the art messed up the story bad to, with Hitch and Ross working on Cap's book, this art just couldn't live up to what Captain America fans have been used to. And the story, well where should I start? Brubaker has said that he likes WWII storys and has writen some vary good flashbacks to Cap's and Bucky's war times, but this was just bad, I would have just wanted to see Cap blowing up some tanks and fighting maybe Red Skull or some other villian, but Vampires! No, that's just really domb, I'm not that big of a vamprie fan, just don't see what's so cool about them (But that's just me), but Brubaker could have done something like he did with the Human Torch's body or something. But really if your loving Reborn and plan on buying the whole serie, you don't really have to buy this, if your collecting the whole Cap series then sure I guess your going to want to buy this, but for people just getting into the book, I would say pass on this, you won't be missing out on anything.
